Top 10 Greatest Disaster Movies
We're talking about the cinematic world where chaos reigns supreme, natural laws break down, and heroes emerge from the unlikeliest of places. Welcome to the realm of disaster movies. These films have been thrilling audiences for decades, offering a mix of suspense, action, and sometimes even a touch of romance amid the chaos. Whether it's tsunamis, earthquakes, meteorites, or volcanic eruptions, these movies throw humanity into extraordinary circumstances and challenge not just the cast but also you, the viewer, to ponder, "What would I do?"I want to work in geography because of this film. Amazing. I am literally the biggest fan of this movie ever.
Definitely one of the better films in the disaster subgenre.
This movie had a really interesting plot.
It's the "mother of all disaster movies," as the late, great Roger Ebert said. As a movie, it's one of the best of its kind and a really entertaining ride from start to finish.
Let me tell you, 2012 is just so epic, so emotional. It's the best disaster movie ever made. I'm still crying.
I downloaded this on iTunes not long ago.
When it came out in cinemas, I missed it and was looking for it everywhere.
This is a long-time favorite of mine.
I wish I could have seen it in the cinema, but I was 1 year old when this movie came out.
I watched this in 7th grade for science.
The uh... spaceships are going to position themselves all over the world, and then... checkmate! - Jeff Goldblum
The graphics, acting, and plotline are unbeatable.
Great movie. I couldn't keep my eyes off the screen.
The highest-grossing movie of all time is ingeniously written, beautifully performed, skillfully acted, and has an engaging plot. It features unforgettable moments, shocking special effects, beautiful music, expert cinematography, and a strong, thought-provoking message about class discrimination and arranged marriage. It brings history back to life, and on top of it all, it had something no disaster movie has been able to include before or since: character development!
No movie, and I mean no movie, has ever left me unable to explain how amazing Titanic is. James Cameron has made a film as well-made and unforgettable as Titanic. DiCaprio and Winslet played some of the most memorable characters in motion picture history and will never be forgotten. I mean never.
This film is well-written and really lets you connect emotionally with the characters. It has some very emotional scenes, even before the comet hits. Unlike other disaster films, the audience is not invited to revel in the destruction. Instead, it is invited to experience it from a real-world perspective, as if it were actually happening and you were stuck in the middle of it. Amazing film.
For some reason, people don't find it sad. Its impact on emotion is bigger than the meteor itself.
The third film of Edgar Wright's "Three Flavours Cornetto" trilogy.
An all-star cast of Simon Pegg, Paddy Considine, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman, Rosamund Pike, and Eddie Marsan.
Literally one of my favorite films of all time. The Rock is amazing in it.
One of two films that are essential to the genre, with The Towering Inferno being the other. Come on... how is this NOT #1? The capsize scene will never be done as well. Those practical effects!
I'm sorry, but this movie should be number 1. This film is the granddaddy of all modern disaster movies, and it's still the best! The Towering Inferno should be a close number 2 on the list.
An absolute classic. It should be higher on the list! How is Category 7: End of the World above this?
One of the big four (Airport, The Towering Inferno, and The Poseidon Adventure being the others). This seminal picture really cements the disaster film flow and formula for a long while, at least until terrible CGI took over.
The Newcomers
By far the best disaster movie. You won't see Bruce Willis any better than in this. It's an action-packed, heart-pumping film with a sad, tearful story. Everything you could want!
It has everything you want in a movie: storyline, action, romance, humor, and great chemistry among the awesome cast. Love this film.
I'm waiting for a prequel or sequel.
I love this movie. I've seen it a bunch of times, and it never gets old.
Best volcano thriller movie ever made!
Next to Twister and Deep Impact, this is also a high favorite. I love this one.
Seriously? This movie ranks below Category 7 and Deep Impact? Have you seen this movie? It needs to be near the top of your list, in your top 10 at least.
The fact that this is so low when it was Oscar-nominated in multiple categories makes me never understand average people.
I would rate this movie at the top of the list. It's an emotionally powerful film. The realism is too close for comfort. Brilliant.
An essential film in the genre. It has stars, melodrama, and is epic in length but not so much in scope, which actually helps. Awesome film with amazing special and practical effects.
One of the two best disaster films ever to make it to the screen (the other being The Poseidon Adventure).
The effects may have been fake, but this movie (for a TV miniseries) is really awesome. I bought it on Blu-Ray instantly once I knew it was available.
The remake is a success, and Tom Cruise gives a great performance. It really shows the emotion and fear in the movie. I still fear tripods coming out of the ground.
I love how Tom Cruise played his role as a father in this movie.
Great special effects. Part 2 is badass too - 10.5: Apocalypse.
