It all started with a couch, a guitar, and two guys who looked like they had wandered off the set of a Renaissance fair and into a Guitar Center. You pressed play, and suddenly, bam, your ears were baptized in the holy fire of Tenacious D.
That's Jack Black, a human wrecking ball of charisma and vocal thunder. And Kyle Gass, the bald bard with fingers faster than a caffeinated spider monkey.
Formed in Los Angeles in 1994, Tenacious D spent the late '90s turning comedy rock into a full-contact sport. Their cult HBO series premiered in 1997, giving the world a louder, weirder look at The D before their self-titled debut album arrived in 2001. Since then, Black and Gass have built a musical kingdom out of absurd humor, throat-shredding vocals, and riffs sharp enough to shave a yak.
This is a band that gave us songs about demonic showdowns, vocal cords so powerful they cause physical destruction, and, of course, a tribute to the greatest song in the world. Not the actual greatest song in the world. Just a tribute. Because apparently the universe has rules, and one of them is that mankind cannot be trusted with that much acoustic power.

Tribute
After listening to the fan collaboration and the rereleased 1995 demo remaster, I think it's safe to say that I have been a fan of the D since the very beginning, when their debut 2001 album was released during my high school years.
"Tribute" is one of those songs that got me through hard times, such as my dad passing away. It has powerful but funny lyrics, great voices from both JB and KG, and the absolute eargasm that is the "Nay! We are but men!" part and the ending. I listened to that album all the time until my mom got sick of it, even when I was playing Pokemon or studying for a test.
The follow-up albums, the Pick of Destiny soundtrack, Rize of the Fenix, and Post-Apocalypto, were great, too. I have one last thing to say: long live the D. Your socks have officially been rocked off.

Beelzeboss
When someone says that Tenacious D is satanic, I reply with, "These guys beat the Devil in a rock-off challenge in this song. They deserve a special spot in Heaven."
This song is probably the reason why The Pick of Destiny is one of the greatest 2000s musical comedy movies of all time, and it still remains a cult classic to this day. When I first saw this movie back in late 2006, I just broke down laughing at the scenes with Dave Grohl as the Devil. The whole final battle scene was worth it.
The Pick of Destiny is a reminder that just because it has stupid comedy, it doesn't mean that it's a terrible movie. This was peak Jack Black back in the day.

Master Exploder
I gotta say Master Exploder is the best song ever, even better than Tribute or Beelzeboss. The world's best song by far. I mean, he doesn't need a microphone!
Absolutely brilliant! This is a lyrical masterpiece with amazing riffs and solos. Definitely #1 material.

Kickapoo
This is pretty much JB's backstory in song form. He is from a well-off, religious, conservative family who hates rock music. Yet, when he plays the "tasty jam" to his family, he gets spanked and grounded for a week.
So he prays to Dio for guidance, and Dio tells him to run away from his family and his hometown to travel to Hollywood, where he will meet KG in the end. Such a powerful song for a simple backstory.
Great song, the first song I ever heard and really liked from Tenacious D, and the clip is just awesome!

The Metal
No one can destroy the metal. The metal will strike you down with a vicious blow. We are the vanquished foes of the metal. We tried to win, but why we do not know.
My favorite line in this song. No one can destroy the metal... until you realize that a former member of a famous grunge band is playing the drums. But still, good song.
You can't kill the metal. The metal will live on! These other songs tried to kill the metal. Ha, they failed as I voted for The Metal!
Best song in the universe. Tenacious D kicks ass.

This song really is great. Jack Black's vocals on this song are the best I've ever heard in my life. I'm not exaggerating at all. Just listen to it.

F*** Her Gently
This song was a playlist staple for every one of our house parties in college. It was a party anthem akin to Bohemian Rhapsody. Every one of us would passionately and dramatically sing every word of this song to our girlfriends for the entire crowd to behold.
Some say their eyes are still rolling to this very day, like boulders cascading down a never-ending hillside.
This song, for a guy that doesn't know much, is helpful and inspiring! I hope in the future it helps as much as I think it will.
