Top 10 Songs on Sodom's in the Sign of Evil / Obsessed by Cruelty

In the Sign of Evil was the debut EP by Sodom, and Obsessed by Cruelty was their debut studio album. Both of these albums were part of the first wave of black metal, during a period when the band played pure blackened speed/thrash metal. This was before they transitioned into their more well-known thrash style.

These albums were originally released separately. However, when Obsessed by Cruelty was later reissued, it included all the tracks from the In the Sign of Evil EP as bonus material.

There are actually two recorded versions of Obsessed by Cruelty. The band had to rerecord the album because the record label was not satisfied with the first version. The original version was recorded in Berlin and released in the United States through Metal Blade Records. The second version was recorded in Nuremberg and released in Germany through Steamhammer Records.

According to Tom Angelripper, the two versions are "completely different." The second version features a bonus track titled "After the Deluge." Destructor (Michael Wulf) played guitar on the first version, while Assator (Uwe Christophers) played on the second.

The album had a major influence on the emerging black metal scene. Mayhem founder and guitarist Euronymous once described early Sodom and Destruction releases as underrated "masterpieces of black stinking metal."
