Best Songs on Soulfly's Dark Ages
Dark Ages is the fifth studio album by Soulfly. It was recorded in 2005 and released on October 4, 2005. The album explores aggression and dark themes, mourning the deaths of Max Cavalera's 8-month-old grandson, Moses, and his close friend Dimebag Darrell. Dark Ages was recorded in five countries: Serbia, Turkey, Russia, France, and the United States. Cavalera described this album as "unorthodox metal." Many fans noted that this album marked a return to the heavier, more aggressive sound that Sepultura had during Max's tenure with the band. The album opens with the intro track "The Dark Ages," which transitions seamlessly into "Babylon," a song that explores themes of worldwide chaos.
"Arise Again" combines Metallica-like riffs with echoes reminiscent of Sepultura's earlier work.
"Corrosion Creeps" is dedicated to Chuck Schuldiner of Death, honoring his influence on the metal genre.
"Fuel the Hate" begins with the lyric, "Monday, July 16, 1945, 5:30 a.m.," referencing the exact time and date of the "Trinity" nuclear test.
Around this period in Soulfly's history, the band's lyrical themes shifted away from the earlier spiritual focus and embraced more violent and aggressive elements.
Richie Cavalera, Max's son, co-sings on "Staystrong," a heartfelt tribute to the youthful deaths of Moses and Dana.
The outro for "Bleak" was recorded in an ancient temple in Istanbul, using its natural echoes as a sound effect, a technique frequently employed on this album.
The track "Molotov" features lyrics in Russian, Portuguese, and a final verse in English. Billy Milano, one of the two guest artists on this song, recorded his performance over the phone with Max.
"Riotstarter" stands out with its powerful tribal chants, blending traditional elements with heavy metal.
"Innerspirit" features clean, melodic vocals by guest vocalist Coyote, interwoven with Cavalera's signature roars.
As with previous Soulfly albums, Dark Ages includes a sequel to the song "Soulfly." This album's installment, "Soulfly V" (stylized in Roman numerals), is a hidden track.
