Top 10 U.S Cities Most in Need of a Sports Championship

Every city that has a professional sports team has either won a championship or has not. While some cities, like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, have reaped the rewards of winning championships, other cities have struggled to either taste victory or add to their championship resume.

These are the top 10 U.S. sports cities that need to win a championship from their sports teams.

The Top Ten
  1. Buffalo, New York

Buffalo is the second-largest city in the U.S. state of New York and the largest city in Western New York. It is located on the eastern shore of Lake Erie and at the head of the Niagara River. Buffalo is known for its historic architecture, cultural institutions, and as the birthplace of Buffalo wings... read more

Buffalo has not had a team win a championship since the Bills back in 1964, when they were part of the AFL and the Super Bowl did not exist for a few more years. The Bills lost four straight Super Bowls from 1990 to 1993, while the Sabres fell in two Stanley Cup Finals.

This year might be the best chance for either team to get a title, as the Sabres are in the playoffs after a 14-year drought, while the Bills are still searching for a way to get past the Chiefs in the AFC gauntlet.

  2. Minneapolis, Minnesota

Aside from the Minnesota Lynx of the WNBA, which has won four titles, no Big 4 Minnesota team has won a championship since the Twins won their second title back in 1991. In that time, the Twins reached the ALCS once in 2002, while the Vikings reached four NFC Championship games and the Minnesota Wild only reached the conference finals once in 2003.

  3. San Diego, California

San Diego is a city in the U.S. state of California. It is known for its mild year-round climate, beautiful beaches, and major tourist attractions such as the San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park. San Diego is also home to a large U.S. Navy presence and several universities.

San Diego's lone championship came in 1963 when the Chargers won 51-10. Over the next period, the Chargers went to one Super Bowl and lost, while the Padres are 0-2 in World Series play. With the Chargers in L.A., the Padres are San Diego's only chance left of getting a title, but getting past the Dodgers will be the top priority before they could sniff a World Series.

  4. Cincinnati, Ohio

Cincinnati was once a proud sports city that had won five World Series titles with the Cincinnati Reds. But after the Reds last won a title in 1990, the city has gone without one. The Reds haven't been in the NLCS since 1995. The Bengals have gone 0-3 in Super Bowl appearances.

  5. Salt Lake City, Utah

Salt Lake City is the capital and the most populous city in the state of Utah. It was founded in 1847 by Brigham Young and other Mormon pioneers. The city is known for its proximity to the Great Salt Lake and for hosting the 2002 Winter Olympics.

For many years, Salt Lake City was home to the Utah Jazz, which went 0-2 against Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in the NBA Finals. Now, with the arrival of the Utah Mammoth of the NHL, Utah's title chances have increased, though it will take time for the Mammoth to become serious Stanley Cup contenders.

  6. Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta is the capital and most populous city in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of approximately 498,715, making it the 38th most populous city in the United States. Atlanta is also a major transportation hub, home to the busiest airport in the world, Hartsfield... read more

Atlanta's only two championships came from the Braves in 1995 and 2021. The Falcons had two Super Bowl appearances and were a quarter and a half away from winning their most recent appearance. The Hawks have been to the conference finals.

  7. Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland is a major city in the U.S. state of Ohio and serves as the county seat of Cuyahoga County. It is located on the southern shore of Lake Erie and is part of the Great Lakes region. Once a proud city that had the Browns winning NFL titles before the Super Bowl era, Cleveland has since become the butt of sports jokes. The Mistake by the Lake has only one title since 1964 with LeBron James and the Cavaliers, but that was because Golden State blew a 3-1 lead in the series.

Aside from that, the Browns are one of four teams not to make a Super Bowl. The Guardians, formerly the Indians, have played in four World Series since their last title in 1948.

  8. Phoenix, Arizona

Phoenix is the capital and most populous city of Arizona, with a population of approximately 1,626,000 people. It is the fifth most populous city in the United States and the only state capital with over one million residents.... read more

Phoenix has had one championship in its history, that being the 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks defeating the Yankees in the World Series. However, before and since then, title opportunities have been dry, just like the desert. The Suns are 0-3 in NBA Finals history, having lost all three in six games. The Diamondbacks lost in 2023 to the Texas Rangers. The Arizona Cardinals were one two-minute drive away from beating Pittsburgh in the Super Bowl, and the Arizona Coyotes only made the conference finals before moving to Utah.

  9. Nashville, Tennessee

Nashville is the capital and largest city of the U.S. state of Tennessee. It is widely recognized for its role in the country music industry, earning it the nickname Music City. The city is home to major landmarks such as the Grand Ole Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Nashville has recently become a sports town, but the Titans and Predators have only made one championship appearance each. The Titans came within a yard of tying Super Bowl 34. The Predators pushed the Penguins to six games in 2017.

  10. Houston, Texas

Houston has won four titles, with both the Rockets (94, 95) and Astros (17, 22) each winning two. If we were to count the Houston Comets, who are set to make their return to the WNBA next season, the Dynamo, and the Dash, it would be 11 titles for Houston, which would mean they wouldn't be on this list.

While the Astros' dynastic run might be over for now, the Rockets and Texans are both building to become championship-caliber teams. But whether both franchises can get over the hump to win remains a question.
