During WW2, air raid sirens went off, and anti-aircraft guns were fired repeatedly over West Los Angeles. At the time, it was claimed that Japanese planes may have been looking to bomb the blacked-out Hughes Aircraft plant. Nothing in the air was ever hit, although a couple of people on the ground died from falling AA rounds. Since then, conspiracy theorists have often said this may have actually been a UFO encounter.
