Movie Review - Escape Room (2019)

MegaSoulhero I just saw a movie called Escape Room. It actually is NOT out yet. It comes out in January. However, I managed to get a ticket to see it a month early. I had no idea what it was about, but it was free so I decided to check it out.

It’s about a group of people who get invited to an escape room and they need to work together and find clues to try to survive since they enter various rooms that are filled with traps that can actually kill them. When going into this film, it’s pretty obvious what’s gonna happen. It’s very predictable. I knew who was gonna survive. They could not have made it anymore obvious. They even gave it away at the beginning. That’s the dumbest thing a movie could do. But was the execution at least good? No it wasn’t. I did not care about any of these characters at all. They did nothing to make me want them to come out alive. When most of them got killed, I won’t say who did, I felt absolutely nothing. These characters are very underdeveloped. We do find out some things about each of the characters. They’ve all had traumatic events happen to them, but they’re only talked about briefly despite factoring into the story. This is a shame because the actors actually do a pretty great job. The fear on their faces feel very real. So I’ll give this movie credit for that.

Another positive I can give this film is the escape rooms are pretty creative. I especially like the upside down pool room. They did a great job with that. Unfortunately, the effects are pretty bad. Like when they’re in the snowy area, the green screen is painfully obvious. Also, there’s a part where a room catches on fire and it doesn’t look convincing at all. There’s also a scene that REALLY reminded me of the Screenslaver fight scene from Incredibles 2. There were even strobe lights involved. Probably just a coincidence, but that’s just very weird. Apparently, the people that set up these escape rooms know about the things that happened to these victims and incorporate them into the rooms. How would they find out about these things? Just felt like lazy writing to me. The movie also had the nerve to end by setting up a supposed sequel. I doubt that sequel is gonna happen. I don’t even think this movie is gonna make a lot of money.

This is one of the worst movies of 2019. Even though 2019 hasn’t started yet. I drove for almost 2 hours in a lightning storm to see this movie and it was NOT worth it. I’m highly convinced that I wasn’t the only one at the screening who didn’t like it considering how quickly people were leaving the theater once it was over. It’s a waste of time. Don’t bother seeing. It’s a very predictable mess that doesn’t make a lot of sense. The acting is great and the set designs are great, but those elements aren’t enough to save the movie.

Score: 3/10
