Top Ten Songs About Cowboys Not from Traditional Country/Western Artists

The Top Ten
1 Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts - Bob Dylan
2 This Ol' Cowboy - The Marshall Tucker Band
3 Desperado - The Eagles
4 Sweet Baby James - James Taylor
5 Knockin' On Heaven's Door - Bob Dylan
6 Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy - Elton John
7 Wanted Dead or Alive - Bon Jovi

This song is legendary, especially with that intro. Should be #1.

8 The Ballad of Billy the Kid - Billy Joel
9 Cowboy - Kid Rock
10 Roy Rogers - Elton John
The Contenders
11 The Sabre and the Rose - Kris Kristofferson

Ok I admit I may have stretched the criteria here. This could be viewed as a country song by an artist who is/was closely associated with country music. But it's such a good song and story... It crossed my mind to include Pancho and Lefty, too, another great song, but I restrained myself. And in the day, Kris was a star apart from the country scene - movies, mainstream... Weak defense I don't know. But a damn good song. Hang me :P

12 Cowgirl In the Sand - Neil Young

Made the list even though it's "cowgirl" and I don't find much else in the song that relates to the theme.

13 Chestnut Mare - The Byrds
14 Gunslinger - Avenged Sevenfold
15 Cowboys from Hell - Pantera
16 Cowboy Song - Thin Lizzy
17 Blaze of Glory - Jon Bon Jovi
18 The Last Cowboy - In This Moment
19 Gold Rush - Snoop Dogg
20 Back In the Saddle Again - Aerosmith
21 Ringo - Lorne Greene

Lorne Greene. "Ben Cartwright" of Bonanza. Which had a great instrumental theme and Kool intro with a map of the ranch slowly burning away...

22 Two Gunslingers - Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
23 Avenging Annie - Andy Pratt
24 Cowboy - Lindemann
25 Modern Day Cowboy - Tesla
