The Sabre and the Rose - Kris Kristofferson
Ok I admit I may have stretched the criteria here. This could be viewed as a country song by an artist who is/was closely associated with country music. But it's such a good song and story... It crossed my mind to include Pancho and Lefty, too, another great song, but I restrained myself. And in the day, Kris was a star apart from the country scene - movies, mainstream... Weak defense I don't know. But a damn good song. Hang me :P
-
Cowgirl In the Sand - Neil Young
Made the list even though it's "cowgirl" and I don't find much else in the song that relates to the theme.
-
Chestnut Mare - The Byrds
-
Gunslinger - Avenged Sevenfold
-
Cowboys from Hell - Pantera
-
Cowboy Song - Thin Lizzy

Lorne Greene. "Ben Cartwright" of Bonanza. Which had a great instrumental theme and Kool intro with a map of the ranch slowly burning away...
