Janis Joplin (1943-1970) was an American singer who rose to fame as the main singer of acid band Big Brother and the Holding Company. She was known for her eccentric hippie style and psychedelic rock music.
She isn't even in the top 10?!
It is appalling that she is below such awful singers, though I must say, Whitney Housten can bring the house down and I'm glad she's up there. But so many great singers are being denied their rightful title. Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, TINA TURNER should be up in the top 10. It enrages me that ETTA JAMES isn't even on here. Her voice is absolutely gorgeous.
Just because Janis doesn't sound like any mainstream no talant doesn't mean she's worthless. Her voice has soul and power and I just sit back in amazement whenever I listen to her voice. It's raw and beautiful. She should be number one! You people have such poor musical taste, it makes me want to cry. - NicePants
Janis Joplin should be number 1 in this list. I look at the people above her--c'mon, Miley Cyrus, you've got to be kidding--and I think, this list must be run by 12 year olds. I'm sure it has to be an age thing that is preventing Janis from being at the top.
Go to Youtube and put in Janis Joplin Ball & Chain. Then be prepared to have her reach into your chest and grab ahold of your heart with both hands. She won't let go till the song ends, and even then you can feel the after-effects. - MMacairan
I can't even begin to express my outrage of the complete idiots on this board who are raking Janis at #38 (today). She is so obviously the greatest blues singer of all times. Now maybe her blues can't match Ms. Franlin's gospel, but theres plenty of room at the top for these ladies. I know the voters are young and stupid, but lets not make some obvious no talents shine brighter than The Pearl.
When I clicked at the list I seriously said to myself 'If Janis isn't on there, I'm gonna be very, very sad" and reading all the names on here almost made me give up. I'm glad that there are at least a few people who remember her. When I first heard a Joplin song I was completely blown away. It's like you could almost touch her voice. She had nothing in common with today's Pop singers and she lived always at her most intense. This kind of music is something you really have to listen to and not just dance it away because there is so much emotion in it. She really makes you feel it and I will always love her.
She's one of the greatist female rock vocal! Must be in top ten in this list.
You got to be kidding me! 0. 2 of the vote?!?!? come on people, get real, listen to some real music! Janis Joplin's voice is incomparably better than anyone's since or before her. All these "great" singers you have before her on this list are bland, boring, and all sound the same. lets get some love for Janis in here! - Epitaph1967
janis is the best bar none even ronnie dio whose second place but a man, janis is without a doubt different and a one time goer. challange me as anyone been so out there but still the best. pink and madonna give me a break. suicide is better than accepting them. its like comparing venom to bathory no match. venom plays music bathory screams and makes noises.
Some singers may sing "sweeter", and maybe even have a bigger vocal range, but Janis Joplin sang with more passion than any person - ever. Sadly, she only lived long enough to have a few songs, but with those few, she wrote the book on how it should be done. All singers should take note.
Janis didn't just sing songs. She was crying, roaring, and shouting out of her spirit of freedom on the stage. She never tried to pretend to be nice, beautiful or merciful but her voice told everything in compassion, peace, and love as a human-being. Love Janis forever!
She's NO DOUBT in the top 5, even in a survey that's totally subjective. Range, HEART, pure passion....she had it all (and left us far too soon).
To not put her in the top 5 is a sham....I mean, Mariah Carey is better than Janis Joplin (can't believe I just typed that!) - LateBloom
She is my inspiration. She was ugly, but very talented. That gave me hope as a singer. Her songs were meaningful. Her songs had great vocals. She was amazing without any sort of vocal training, too. She defied her parents, to make it big. We'll miss you, Janis.
How Janis is below Demi, Taylor and Ariana Grande I will never know. She was the 1960s version of Amy Winehouse and my favourite song by her is me and Bobby McGee. She has talent like no other. - ItsDaWorldOfSNuGGLEZ
So... Britney spears sings better than Janis... haha... haha... No comment! Please be serious... Don't joke!
It's the same for Ella, Billie Holiday, Grace Slick, Aretha and others... Please be serious!
Katy Perry better than Janis Joplin! I don't know who collated this list but I am assuming they are 12 and don't listen to anything that isn't on MTV. Try Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell, Bjork, Sinead O'Connor and many, many others that are in a different league to the mass produced pop rubbish above.
But FOR THE LOVE OF GOD - is there really a living human being who thinks Selena Gomez is a better musician than Nina Simone?
How can Janis Joplin even be compared with the teeny bop brats of this current fast food style pop? Janis was raw talent, wrapped in energy and fueled by reality. How many songs has Britney written for herself? Yeah, icon means icon not catchy radio play.
I can't believe that Janis Joplin is so low. I don't care what any one else say's she is number one. Miley Cyrus is above her, that's just rideculus! - jurobhop
I genuinely love Ella Fitzgerald, although I guess mainly for sentimental reasons but Janis Joplin is special. When she sings, my heart soars. Her voice is just so powerful and emotionally charged. She was - IS - incredible. - Britgirl
first and for most no one can ever touch Janis Joplin... She had a unique voice that no one has ever come close to... She is amazing, I truely wish she had not died many years before my time... Anyone that hasnt heard her should check her out...
There are some amazing voices on this list but then there are others that just to seem to be in as part of a teenage popularity contest. Janis honestly gives me goosebumps when she sings. Songs like "Cry Baby" and "Summertime" are absolutely amazing.
Janis, Patti Smith, Nico, Joni Mitchell, Aretha, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Etta James, Edith Piaf, Bjork, Dusty Springfield, Dolly Parton, Stevie Nicks. THESE ARE REAL FEMALE ARTISTS I MEAN I DON'T EVEN RECOGNIZE HALF THE NAMES ON THIS LIST.
Janis Joplin was a musician's vocalist. That's what set her so far a part from 'female entertainers'. Muscians hear Janis and say, "She, understands...".
Janis Joplin... Below Miley Cirus. I am ashamed of my generation.
This woman has one of the most characteristic, raw, strangely beautiful voices that I have ever heard in my life. I'm a fan of all kinds, from pop voices, to RnB voices, to voices from singers in the early 20th century style to even opera, and none have given me chills like this woman's voice. She is truly one of a kind and deserves much more recognition than she's getting here.
It was hard to choose between Janis and Aretha, but Janis's amazing range pushed her on over. What's up with all the little girls on this list? What a joke. - vsanders
Janis MUST be number 1 - the most original, raw talent that has ever come out of the Music Industry - please.
Janis does not deserve to be put on the list below Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato, Taylor Swift and most of the singers that have gotten a higher spot on this list. She is by far one of the most talented
