Best Students from Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair

The characters from this game are in general better than in the first game. That said, there are still characters that are definitely better than others. As with anything even slightly related to Danganronpa, spoilers below.
The Top Ten
1 Gundham Tanaka

His character personality was really interesting, especially how he was a breeder and looked nothing like one. Because of that, he probably the funniest moments ever. Seeing him die just made my friend and my heartbreak, he even sacrificed himself in a way. He was a very good interesting character and seeing him die was very sad. But I'm glad he was able to live longer than the rest.

In my opinion, Gundham Tanaka is the best character in Danganronpa history. His execution was the only one that made me shed genuine tears. Behind his evil persona, he shows that he is truly kind and caring. Him and Nekomaru sacrificing themselves for the rest of the students was such a courageous thing to do, and let's not forget that his freetime events with Hajime are fantastic.

2 Fuyuhiko Kuzuryuu Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu (九頭龍 冬彦 Kuzuryū Fuyuhiko), is a student of Hope's Peak Academy's Class 77-B, and a participant of the Killing School Trip featured in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. His title is Ultimate Yakuza.

Fuyuhiko went through a lot of character development, and I even liked him before the second trial. He reminds me of someone from wings of fire, considering they're both pretty much tsunderes and both of their names mean Winter. His Yakuza status and being the largest Yakuza's heir is really cool. It also caused pressure on Fuyuhiko, making him believe he had to be better than everyone else and that he had to work to earn his position. I don't know if anyone is dedicated enough to read on, but if you've mad sit this far, I suggest you just watch a character analysis or you can just keep reading. Him being snappy and threatening was just a cover up to mask who he really was. But he also meant a lot of his threats, and was just a lil angry midget over all. His character development in the second trial really got him "spiced up" as a character, proving how much he cared for Peko and that he really did have redeeming qualities. It also proves that he isn't a selfish brat, and that he cared about his little sister enough to try to avenge her, and that he also cared about Peko and didn't want her to act like a tool. After his near death experience after trying to save Peko (I believe this is the first interruption from the watching students in an execution) he really changed and tried to make the best out of Peko's sacrifice. He contributed more and tried to be a better person. He also tried being more open, like giving Akane advice about Nekomaru, and how she should cherish the time she had with him, after he became a robot. In his fte, he also tell Hajime that whatever important women are in his life, that he should appreciate them being alive and to tell them thank you. He also shows affection, saying that once he escaped Jabberwock Island, he would first visit his sister's grave, then make one for Peko and Mahiru. Over all, Fuyuhiko is a great character, and you should still watch his character analysis video even if you've read this far.

3 Ibuki Mioda

Ibuki is a strange character to me, she doesn't contribute to the plot at all, but her personality is so perfect that you can overlook this. The constant subtle music references mixed in with her cheerful nature and her lack of coherence in conversations really make her entertaining to speak with.

She is so cool! Guys, she doesn't desearve to die. Her style is so cool and her personality, guys, take the free time with her, you don't gonna regret.

We even have the same birthday, was it not meant to be? Her style is immaculate, and I'd gladly date her.

4 Nagito Komaeda Nagito Komaeda (狛枝 凪斗 Komaeda Nagito), is a student of Hope's Peak Academy's Class 77-B, and a participant of the Killing School Trip featured in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. His title is Ultimate Lucky Student.

Many claim that he's a psychopath without going into his reasons - not to mention of his illnesses. He is a morally grey character, overall. . Because of his mental illness, Komaeda is incapable of sarcasm.
He lies about lying in order to protect Hinata. He saw that Hinata was starting to sympathize with him and might even forgive him, so he pushed Hinata (and his own romantic feelings) away in order to protect him from his luck cycle.
Anyway, he is a misunderstood character, that I absolutely love - because of the way he fights his own backstory. He doesn't even believe in hope himself- that is what weighs his actions, and everything he does.

5 Sonia Nevermind

It's nice to have a nice, pleasant character among the distrust and hatred that these games can be full of. Her serial killer obsession was great and getting angry at Kazuichi never failed to get a laugh out of me.

I love her, she is true royalty. Pretty and kind.

Occult obsessed foreign princess.

6 Hajime Hinata

From the start, I found him to be much better than Makoto, the main reason for this is that he didn't spend 3/4 of the game saying that he was useless, which annoyed me in THH. His massive development in chapter 6 was also a major reason why I find him to be such an amazing character in the game

I love orange juice boi so much, even though he comes off as plain.

Hinata was wonderful and made me the happiest gamer ever when he went super sayain.

7 Chiaki Nanami Chiaki Nanami (七海 千秋 Nanami Chiaki), is a student of Hope's Peak Academy's Class 77-B, and a participant of the Killing School Trip featured in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. Her title is Ultimate Gamer.

I personally fin her to be the Kyoko of this game, I.e a decent character that is wildly overrated. She helped a lot in the trials and her reveal was heartbreaking, but as a character for most of the game, she was just... there with constant video game references coming off as annoying rather than funny.

8 Peko Pekoyama Peko Pekoyama (辺古山 ペコ Pekoyama Peko), is a student of Hope's Peak Academy's Class 77-B, and a participant of the Killing School Trip featured in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. Her title is Ultimate Swordswoman (超高校級の)

Just go through her fte, and you get a lot of character development out of it. Despite just being Boss Baby's hitman, She has a lot of personality under her thinking of being a tool. Her belief in being a tool itself is interesting enough, and she's really cool as a swordswoman.

She basically contributed to nothing until her final moments, but that made Fuyuhiko a better character, rather than her. Her plan was really clever though

Best girl! deserved so much better to be honest, I also wish she had more screentime

9 Kazuichi Soda

I don't understand why people say he did nothing in the game, he was like Hiro, but useful. His perverted nature was genuinely funny as he got more and more ridiculous in every chapter and both the camera in chapter 3 and fixing the lift in chapter 4 made him actually be useful.

Kazuichi needs so much more love, he's so underrated and his backstory is really interesting.

10 Nekomaru Nidai

Sure, he may be loud, but I love him. I find him to be a really funny addition to the game, as his brand of stupid humour somehow works. His transformation into Mechamaru is also one of my favourite moments in the game. His free time events also nicely flesh him out as an actual character.

The Contenders
11 Akane Owari

I loved the relationship between Akane and Nekomaru, and I loved Akane's fiery and loyal personality and the fact that she's so fond of food (because honestly, who doesn't love food?). Her free time events really explore the kind of place Akane grew up in.

My least favourite character in the entire series by far. She had an annoying personality and contributed nothing in the game despite being a survivor and having so much stuff happen to her. She got the despair disease, but instead of it doing anything that could develop her character, she just constantly cried. When she nearly killed Nekomaru, she cared about it for around 5 minutes. When Nekomaru actually got killed, Minimaru was made and Akane seemed to deem it an acceptable replacement. As well as that, why was she a survivor? The other games had survivors that actually mattered, but there was no reason for her to survive to the end.

12 Mikan Tsumiki

I love Mikan. I feel bad for her and I can relate to her a lot. I can see why people might not like her bc of her personality which is a fair criticism, but the thing that bothers me is people hate her bc of her reason for killing, when that wasn't even her fault ( It was Junko who made her that way and its more elaborated on in the dr3 anime ) . Honestly she deserved better and I hate Junko for what she did to my poor baby

I just feel sorry for her. Mikan was such a sweet nurse, willing to help anyone who's hurt. If it wasn't for the disease that made her remember the time she was brainwashed by Junko, she wouldn't be forced to kill Ibuki and Hiyoko.

13 Mahiru Koizumi

She was nothing during her time I the game. She was just there but without anything interesting about her apart from being kinda rude to men, but even that was boring. When I don't feel any emotions when someone dies in this game, then the game screwed up. Also, she wasn't even some kind of motherly figure like the game seemed to say she was, she is the most boring character in the game.

Mahiru is my favorite danganronpa character. She's so underrated.

14 Hiyoko Saionji

Her character feels like a missed opportunity to me, instead of being so rude to everyone, I think that she would have been more entertaining if she just had her creepy tendencies like she did at the start with the ants. I am happy that she started to change in chapter 3 though.

Hiyoko is one of the characters that had some character development but died during that. I don't like her but I would wanna see her if she survived after chapter 3.

15 Teruteru Hanamura Teruteru Hanamura (花村 輝々 Hanamura Teruteru), is a student of Hope's Peak Academy's Class 77-B, and a participant of the Killing School Trip featured in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. His title is Ultimate Cook.

He's SOOOO funny lmfao. I probably wouldn't like this guy if he was real, but as a video game character he is super entertaining. When he's not being a perv, he's actually a down to earth guy and is really nice and caring about others, especially his Mamma. Most people haven't done his free time events and you really do get to see the character development that sadly never got to be shown in the main story. He goes from being a perverted goofy idiot to being an incredibly respectable cook who's motive for becoming one was simply just so he can see the ones he cares about smile while enjoying his food.

16 Izuru Kamukura
17 The Ultimate Imposter (A.K.A Byakuya Fatogami)

Despite only being around for one chapter, he really made an impact. His kind nature was a great contrast to the Byakuya from the first game, and his obsession with food was priceless. His free time events also made him one of the best characters, shame he was only around for 1 chapter.

18 Usami (Monomi)
19 Celestia Ludenberg Celestia Ludenberg (セレスティア・ルーデンベルク Seresutia Rūdenberuku), also known as Celeste, is a student in Hope's Peak Academy's Class 78th, and a participant of the Killing School Life featured in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc. Her title is the Ultimate Gambler.

Isn't Celestia Ludenburg in Trigger Happy Havoc? Why is she here in the Goodbye Despair list?

20 Kokichi Oma
21 Angie Yonaga
22 Shuichi Saihara
23 Monokuma
24 Sakura Ogami
25 Miu Iruma
