Fallacies

ARandomPerson I've seem multiple fallacies buried deep within lists so here are a few of them:

No true Scotsman. Example: "well they aren't true _______ because _____"

Slippery Slope. Example: "I can't go to the movies. But all my friends are going. That means they won't be my Freinds anymore! And I'll be sad for the rest of my life."

Strawman. Example: "fish have fins." "WELL FISH DON'T HAVE EYES."

Ad Hominem. Example: "You're a piece of s***."

Appeal to authority: "He's famous so everything he says is true."

God of the gaps: "Since we don't know how this happened, there MUST be a supernatural cause!"

Appeal to emotion: "this shouldn't be allowed because I hate cats."

Post Hoc: "I gave my money to charity and so I won the lottery"

Weak Analogy: “Guns are like hammers—they’re both tools with metal parts that could be used to kill someone. And yet it would be ridiculous to restrict the purchase of hammers—so restrictions on purchasing guns are equally ridiculous.”

Ad Populum: A majority believe A so A is true

Tu quoque: "you smoked when you were little so I'm not trusting you on anything you say about smoking"

Appeal to ignorance: since no proof of God has shown, God doesn't exist. (A much better argument comes if you just add in the burden of proof)

Red Herring: the economy is faring really great! "Fish is delicious, I've had it multiple tie,s before and it's delicious....."

False Dichotomy: Caldwell Hall is in bad shape. Either we tear it down and put up a new building, or we continue to risk students’ safety. Obviously we shouldn’t risk anyone’s safety, so we must tear the building down.” (presents only two choices when more are available)

Circular reasoning: the bible is true because God says so in the bible... Which is true....

Hope this helps
