Top 10 Countries with the Best Metal Bands

The Top Ten
1 Finland (Nightwish, Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius, Children of Bodom, Apocalyptica, Korpiklaani) Finland, officially the Republic of Finland, is a Nordic country in Northern Europe. It shares land borders with Sweden to the northwest, Norway to the north, and Russia to the east, with the Gulf of Bothnia to the west and the Gulf of Finland across Estonia to the south. Finland covers an area of 338,455 square kilometres (130,678 sq mi) with a population of 5.5 million. Helsinki is the capital and largest city, forming a larger metropolitan area with the neighbouring cities of Espoo, Kauniainen, and Vantaa. The vast majority of the population are ethnic Finns; Finnish, alongside Swedish, are the official languages. Finland's climate varies from humid continental in the south to the boreal in the north. The land cover is primarily a boreal forest biome, with more than 180,000 recorded lakes.

Finland has an outstanding output of quality Metal bands. I have not found one Finnish Metal band that was terrible, all of them were good. If you want to find more bands there is no better nation to look at than Finland. If you are new to Metal and want to become more involved, bands I would suggest looking for as a starting point would be Children of Bodom, Ensiferum, Nightwish, Turisas and Stratovarius. PS Best part too I'm part Finnish, so Metal is basically in my genes.

Even Obama talked about Finland having the most metal bands in the world (per capita). I'm Swedish so it's hard to admit, but thinking logically, Finland is the most METAL COUNTRY EVER

How can Finland not be number one? They're dishing out great metal bands every other day! I'm gonna go listen to some nightwish.

Don't forget about Amorphis. Absolutely amazing metal music, they deserve the first place hands down.

2 USA (Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Manowar, Death) The United States of America, or the U.S.A. for short, is a federal republic composed of 50 states, 48 of them are contiguous states. There are two other states, Alaska and Hawaii, which are north and south of the contiguous states, respectively. The United States declared its independence from the British Empire in 1776 with the Declaration of Independence. They won their independence in 1783 with the Treaty of Paris. Its capital, Washington D.C. (District of Columbia) is defined by imposing neoclassical monuments and buildings including the iconic ones that house the federal government's 3 branches: the Capitol, White House and Supreme Court. Though it has no official language, English and ...read more.

The U.S. was the birthplace of thrash, the greatest genre of all time. The most underrated genre groove was also invented there by Exhorder and Pantera, which was popularized by bands like Machine Head and White Zombie.

The UK may have invented metal, but America perfected it.

Pantera, Lamb of God, Pentagram, Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Tool, Dream Theater, Anthrax, Testament, Overkill, Mastodon, Iced Earth, the list goes on

USA and UK Are top, end of the story, then Germany.

3 Sweden (Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy, Opeth, HammerFall, Therion) Sweden, officially the Kingdom of Sweden, is a Scandinavian country in Northern Europe. It borders Norway to the west and Finland to the east, and is connected to Denmark in the southwest by a bridge-tunnel across the Öresund. At 450,295 square kilometers (173,860 sq mi), Sweden is the third-largest country in the European Union by area, with a total population of 10 million.

Come on where's in flames, dark tranquility, Avatar and Therion?
For the record Therion is far more skilled than Nightwish and produces a much more impressive sound.
Finland deserves the top but Sweden deserves a damn close second.

Sweden overall has to have the best Extreme Metal scene ever because of Meshuggah, Opeth, Entombed, Spawn of Possession, so many extreme metal bands came from here.

Twilight Force, Sabaton, Amon Amarth, Timeless Miracle, Lost Horizon, Dionysus, Falconer, ReinXeed, the list goes on for Sweden. Best bands in the world from this place!

I love how melodic Swedish metal is. When I listen to stuff like Metalica, I feel like there is something missing. Their isn't enough "art". But not in Swedish metal.

4 United Kingdom (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Motörhead, Cradle of Filth) The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly shortened to United Kingdom, UK or Britain is a Sovereign State located of the Northwestern coast of Europe. I like this list, and the U. K has some great metal bands, but there is a lot of famous bands from these countries that are missing. iron maiden and Judas priest have trouble being beat though.

You lost me at Cradle of Filth. If your talking best metal bands from the UK, you have to have Rainbow, Venom, or Diamond Head instead of Cradle of Filth.

I love Nightwish, but, Britain created heavy metal, without the British bands none of the international ones would exist.

I would add Rainbow and Deep Purple - pioneers of heavy metal and also very talented musicians.

5 Germany (Scorpions, Accept, Helloween, Blind Guardian, Kreator)

Germany it is the capital of metal! )
United Kingdom great too. In my opinion Germany and UK it is only two really great capital of metal!

Also Primal Fear (speed, heavy, power); Edguy (power, heavy); Avantasia (power, metal opera).

German metal sounds the most "metal". The German language was built for metal.

Don't forget equilibrium. Such an awesome band.

6 Norway (Dimmu Borgir, Immortal, Darkthrone, Burzum, Sirenia) Norway, officially the Kingdom of Norway, is a sovereign and unitary monarchy in Northern Europe whose territory comprises the western portion of the Scandinavian Peninsula plus the island Jan Mayen and the archipelago of Svalbard. Oslo is the capital of Norway. Norwegian is the official language of Norway.

The origin of True Norwegian black metal which obviously is the best kind of metal out there come on!

Mayhem Burzum Immortal Emperor Dimmuborgir enslaved darkthrone olddmanschild ulver

Come on Norway has two of best melodic/death metal band's Old Man's Child and Dimmu Borgir on my opinion.

The most metal country ever, hands down!

The dark lords of metal

7 Canada (Annihilator) Canada is a country in North America that is next to the United States, and it's the 2nd largest country in the world by area (size is 9.985 million km²). This country has 10 provinces, and 3 territories. Canada became a dominion on July 1, 1867. Its 10 provinces are: Ontario, British Columbia, Quebec, Alberta, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. Its 3 territories are: Yukon, Northwest territories, and Nunavut. Toronto, Quebec City, Montreal, Vancouver, Winnipeg, St. John's, and Fredericton are major cities in the country. Canada's capital city, Ottawa, is in the southeastern province of Ontario, near the city of Montreal ...read more.

Canada is now lower than countries like The Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, Italy and Brazil but Canada's metal traditions are longer and more stable as compared to those countries. For example, Anvil played thrash before Metallica, Exciter were one of the first speed metal bands, etc. Montreal is still the North America's capital of heavy metal!
This list doesn't represent correctly the real situation. I tried to fix this on my remix. Canada should be higher - bands play heavy and demanding subgenres (technical thrash and death metal).
Also, there are many Canadian metal musicians abroad:
James LaBrie (Dream Theater), Shawn and Glen Drover (Megadeth), Stu Block (Iced Earth), Alissa White-Gluz (Arch Enemy), Randy Black (Primal Fear), Sebastian Bach (Skid Row).

The item title "Canada (Annihilator)" just shows how underrated and underground Canadian metal bands are. Yes, most metal fans only know Annihilator, if any.
My top bands:
Annihilator, Cryptopsy, Gorguts, Beyond Creation, Voivod, Kataklysm, Quo Vadis, D.B.C., Augury, Exciter, Forteresse, Blasphemy, Griss, The Agonist, Into Eternity, and many more.

Some other canadian metal bands I can think of are anvil, crytopsy, silverstein, and three days grace (who are kinda alternative metal).

So Canada has some of the best bands in tech death and Annihilator is the only band mentioned?

8 Netherlands (Epica, Within Temptation, After Forever, Delain, The Gathering) The Netherlands, informally Holland, is a country located in north-western Europe with overseas territories in the Caribbean. It is the largest of four constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Netherlands consists of twelve provinces, and borders Germany to the east, Belgium to the south, with a North Sea coast-line to the north and west. It shares maritime borders with the United Kingdom, Germany, and Belgium in the North Sea. The country's official language is Dutch, with West Frisian as a secondary official language in the province of Friesland. Dutch Low Saxon and Limburgish are recognised regional languages, while Dutch Sign Language, Sinte Romani, and Yiddish are recognised ...read more.

Netherlands has a lot of great singers!

Heidevolk needs to be on the list.

9 Brazil (Sepultura, Soulfly, Angra, Krisiun) Brazil, officially the Federative Republic of Brazil, is the largest country in both South America and Latin America. At 8.5 million square kilometers (3,300,000 sq mi) and with over 214 million people, Brazil is the world's fifth-largest country by area and the sixth most populous. Its capital is Brasília, and its most populous city is São Paulo. The federation is composed of the union of the 26 states and the Federal District. Soulfly doesn't really count as Brazilian though.

Don't forget torture squad!

10 Switzerland (Krokus, Eluveitie, Celtic Frost, Coroner, Lacrimosa)
The Contenders
11 Italy (Rhapsody of Fire, Lacuna Coil, Graveworm)

A great scene for brutal/tech death I.e. Hour of Penance, Fleshgod Apocalypse as well as symphonic metal

12 Poland (Vader, Decapitated, Behemoth) Poland, officially the Republic of Poland, is a country in Central Europe, bordered by Germany to the west; the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the south; Ukraine and Belarus to the east; and the Baltic Sea, Kaliningrad Oblast (a Russian exclave) and Lithuania to the north. With a population of approximately 38.5 million people, Poland is the sixth most populous member state of the European Union. Poland's capital and largest metropolis is Warsaw. Other major cities include Kraków, Łódź, Wrocław, Poznań, Gdańsk and Szczecin. It is currently led by President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. ...read more.

Come on each genre has a polish metal band/bands which are in the top leaque of that genre and also come on when it comes to extreme metal with poland there is no around just look at behemoth, decapitated and vader. Seriously at least top 5

Poland should be top 10 at least surely above italy and netherlands like common behemoth, KAT, Vader etc.

Poland delivers good quality metal!

Polska is strong on this one, Behemot, Vader, Decapitated, Batushka, Hate, Mgla and plenty of other amazing bands which keep it real!

13 France (Gojira, Dagoba, Black Bomb A, Penumbra , Punish Yourself...)

France has some good death metal like gojira (the reason why I like extreme metal), gorod, benightened, and kronos.

14 Japan (Galneryus, Onmyouza, Versailles, Dir en grey, X Japan, Seikima II, Concerto Moon)

Japan got one of the most greatest bands. They are also very skilled. Japan should be at least on rank 6.

Japan lacks in quantity, but if you consider some quality, we all know Japan is one of the best.

Definitely should be higher, they are the most skilled ones after all. This coming from Bodom fan

Japan has some great metal bands... They should be higher!

15 Bangladesh (Artcell, Black, Cryptic Fate, Warfaze, Aurthohin, Powersurge, Mechanix , Poizon Green, Gene Split, Sever Dementia, Satanik, De-illumination)

Someone who added all these, thanks to him. Instead of just one genre, he added different genres of bands. These bands are very good (by the way Satanik is a black metal band). Especially Artcell and Warfaze

I think Bangladesh is an iconic country for metal band music. there are so many bands and listeners. Great...

In Asia, I'd say there's a tie between Bangladesh and Japan. Great bands anyway.

There are countless metal bands in Bangladesh. Max of them are just awesome.

16 Denmark (Mercyful Fate, King Diamond, Týr)

Týr are from the Faroe Islands, a constituent country within the Kingdom of Denmark, not from Denmark itself. Also how could you omit Volbeat.

Don't forget Volbeat. In my opinion, Volbeat is the best band from Denmark, generell.

17 Australia (Parkway Drive, AC/DC, In Hearts wake)

Metalcore/Deathcore: Parkway Drive, Thy Art is Murder, Make them Suffer, Boris the Blade
Extreme Metal: Destroyer 666, Denouncement Pyre, Striborg, Abyssal, Ouroboros, Anno Domini
Prog Metal: Ne Obliviscaris, Arcane
Grindcore: King Parrot, Blood Duster

And that's just from the top of my head. Great stuff from an underrated scene.

Australia should be in the top 10: Be'lakor, Ne Obliviscaris, psycroptic, alchemist, mortification, make them suffer, vanishing point, the berzerker, hollow world to list some..

Ouroboros, Thy Art is Murder, Ne Obliviscaris, Parkway Drive, Destroyer 666 and many more!

AC/DC isn't metal, but Disembowelment is the best Aussie Metal band

18 Greece (Rotting Christ, Septic Flesh, SlavEatGod, Nightrage, Nightfall, South Korea In Vegas)

It's kind of odd that there would be a list for each country I mean it seems to imply that it should be judged simply on these bands when there might actually be hundreds of bands.

19 Indonesia (Burgerkill, Dead Squad, Siksakubur, Jasad, Power Metal, Down for Life)

Indonesia has many good metal bands, there are many death metal band from 90's still productive until now like jasad, forgotten, siksa kubur, death vomit, and still there are many good heavy metal band that still fresh but the music was very sick!

Japan has a biggest metal scene above Indonesia!? It's a Joke! Indonesia metal scene is bigger than japanese metal scene!

Indonesian are sick!

We are the strongest

20 Romania (Negura Bunget, Dordeduh, Trooper, Adanc, Bucovina, Rezistor)
21 Belgium (Channel Zero, Knives to a Gunfight, Diablo Boulevard, Fleddy Melculy, Irreligion) Belgium, officially the Kingdom of Belgium, is a country in Northwestern Europe. The country is bordered by the Netherlands to the north, Germany to the east, Luxembourg to the southeast, France to the southwest, and the North Sea to the northwest. It covers an area of 30,689 km2 (11,849 sq mi) and ...read more.
22 Nepal (Cobweb, The Shadows, Antim Grahan, 1974 Ad)

Nepal is small country and have less population but it's has some great metal band. So Nepali metal band will rise up

23 Russia (Elzevir,Solerrain,Enimor,Scartown,Sunless rise,Svartby)

That's actually a weird list to represent this country. The most popular bands from Russia are Aria, Epidemia, Catharsis, Master, Mavrin, Temnozor, Arkona, Arida Vortex and Mechanical Poet.

Check out Hieronymus Bosh, it's very obscure yet very cool progressive death metal.

Russian bands are very underrated in the West.

Arktida, Arkona, Epidemia, Catharsis? Really? They aren't on here?

24 Austria (Belphegor, Edenbridge, Hollenthon, Abigor, Asmodeus)

Edenbridge is one of the best Symphonic Metal bands I've ever heard!

25 Slovakia (Signum Regis, Orkrist, Obliterate, Phantasma, Within Silence)
