Most Controversial Movies of All Time

The Top Ten
1 A Clockwork Orange

Withdrawn in all forms and not re-released until after the death (27 years later) of the director, Stanley Kubrick, who feared the "droogs" would come and get him and his family, as there had already been copycat crimes committed.

This movie was released back in 1971. That's pretty old for such a controversial film like this.

What a creepy, horrifying movie. I'll never forget it.

2 Salo

It shows how barbaric, twisted, and perverted human beings can be. In my opinion, this movie is the most controversial and disturbing of them all. I can't imagine people sitting in a movie theater watching it!

3 The Birth of a Nation

Let's see, it's loved by critics due to its insane technical achievement (most movies back then were very short, this one ran over three hours) as the first "epic" movie. On the other hand, it is hated by audiences due to its insane racism (the movie concerns a black revolution and the heroes of the movie are the Ku Klux Klan). I don't think it can get more controversial than this.

4 Triumph of the Will

The director of the film was chosen to create a propaganda piece intended to glorify Hitler. It is now seen as a key part of the mass indoctrination of the German public during the Nazi regime.

5 A Serbian Film

This movie may be disgusting, but it's not horrible. Just don't watch if you get sick easily or if you find some of the scenes in the film offensive.

Anyone who watches the unrated version would almost certainly vote for this film.

Literally the grossest thing ever made. How was this even allowed? This should be banned.

6 Cannibal Holocaust

This deserves the number 1 spot. Judging by the synopsis, I will never watch this. It sounds like the worst thing to ever come out of Italy since Benito Mussolini.

This is very controversial due to how graphic it is.

7 The Last Temptation of Christ

This is offensive and quite twisted. People were so angry about this movie that a theater in France got bombed for showing this movie.

8 The Passion of the Christ

Mel Gibson details the last 12 hours of Jesus' life in a brutal way (maybe that's the truth, maybe not). That has given birth to a big controversy for his movie.

The Leftist-Atheist organizations were extremely upset that a movie was made without their blessing or permission.

Maybe Gibson exaggerated some things with Jesus' punishment. We don't know it exactly, but still, this movie is a classic!

9 Last Tango in Paris
10 In the Realm of the Senses
The Contenders
11 The Human Centipede

Just by seeing the name, I have to barf. Why would you make a movie about a human centipede? That's the epitome of disturbing.

This movie is so screwed up in so many ways. It should definitely be higher on the list.

12 Fahrenheit 9/11
13 South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut

Okay. In Norway, where I came from, this movie got an 11+ rating, and the racism, violence, and swearing in this movie made me gasp as a 13-year-old!

14 Titicut Follies
15 Freaks
16 Caligula
17 Song of the South

Huh. Doesn't look controversial from the picture of a happy cartoon bunny on the cover. I have been wrong before, though.

Shouldn't that movie be number one? I mean, it's racist!

18 I Spit on Your Grave (1978)
19 Natural Born Killers
20 The Testament of Dr. Mabuse
21 Kids

When I saw this movie, I found it extremely lame. Nothing shocked me in this overrated movie. I live in Europe and if it's typical American to call a film like this controversial, I think you have very restricted lives back there.

22 Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
23 The Interview
24 Pink Flamingos

How is this below Twilight Zone, The Song of The South (although it did get controversy, nowadays, it's mainly from people who haven't watched the movie) and South Park?

25 Twilight Zone: The Movie

Controversial for a fatal helicopter crash on set during filming, which caused the director to be taken to court.
