Top 10 Movies with the Most Harsh MPAA Rating
You buy a ticket for a restricted blockbuster expecting a gritty spectacle of pure chaos, only to discover the ratings board slapped a bizarrely severe label on a film that barely features a skinned knee. Those mysterious, pearl-clutching reviewers have a strange habit of punishing movies with classifications that are entirely too harsh given their actual on-screen content.
It feels like watching a toddler get grounded for a month just for spilling a single drop of milk. Your brain struggles to comprehend how a few shadowy rooms or a lone curse word suddenly justify blocking half the audience from entering the cinema.
-
The Matrix (Rated R)
The most "adult" thing in this whole movie was one club scene, with no nudity. Why, MPAA? Why rate this R?
Suggested rating: rated PG-13 for science fiction violence and mild language.
-
Psycho (1960) (Rated R)
There's a HUGE, and I mean huge, misconception that there's nudity in the shower scene. Now, while it's obvious that the actress is nude, there is nothing explicit shown on-screen. There is little to no blood, and the violence is intense but not shown.
I can understand why this had an R rating in 1984, before PG-13 existed, because it didn't fit a PG rating, but it just shouldn't be kept in the same league as something like Fight Club, with super intense violence and sexual themes. Psycho should definitely be rerated to PG-13.
Suggested rating: rated PG-13 for some violent content and disturbing images.
-
Run Lola Run (Rated R)
Suggested rating: rated PG-13 for some violent content, mild language, and some mild sexual content.
-
Hot Shots! (Rated PG-13)

-
Ju-On (Rated R)
While the PG-13 remake has some gruesome scenes to watch, this version really has only one scene that's on the edge, which is the ending. But even this scene was in the PG-13 remake.
Suggested rating: PG-13.
Yes, it's a horror movie, but the majority of the movie doesn't have many scary scenes. Also, the ghost isn't that scary.
Suggested rating: rated PG-13 for some disturbing images and some violent content.

This is literally a movie about a gay couple who do nothing but kiss once and stay in bed fully clothed, and it suddenly gets an R rating? Is our film rating system homophobic or something?
