Best Members of Metallica

The Top Ten
James Hetfield He is the primary rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist. Known for his distinctive style of downpicking, he plays a central role in the band's songwriting process.

Greatest vocalist ever. I have been a fan of Metallica since I was ten. I loved listening to Enter Sandman, then got into their lesser-known stuff. James will always be the best vocalist ever. Just listen to Nothing Else Matters, Mama Said, and Low Man's Lyric, and you will see just how amazing his vocals are. METALLICA 4 EVA!

He has been making and keeps making the greatest contribution to his band: being lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist at the same time, writing awesome lyrics that deal with social and political issues, and writing music along with Lars. He's an extremely great musician.

Cliff Burton A bassist whose innovative techniques, including the use of distortion and wah pedals, contributed to the band's early sound. He was a key influence in shaping their music before his untimely death in 1986.

Should be No. 1.

Why were Trapped Under Ice and Escape the worst songs on Ride the Lightning? Probably because they were the only ones where Cliff Burton wasn't one of the writers.

Why was Master of Puppets so good? Well, it probably wouldn't have been so good if Cliff Burton didn't write some of the songs. Damage Inc. would have been my least favorite song on the album if Burton didn't write it, and I would have hated Orion if it weren't for him.

Thinking about others (Wikipedia), check.
Christian, check.
Made Metallica a good band, check.

Pretty much the best Metallica member of all time.

Kirk Hammett He is the lead guitarist, recognized for his melodic solos and frequent use of the wah pedal. His contributions to the band's signature sound have been pivotal since he joined in 1983.

Has some of the craziest solos. Even James has said that Kirk is the better guitarist between the two of them, and I would agree.

Ok, so Dave Mustaine was just a talented songwriter and guitar player who was famous for being good at it.

Kirk Hammett is a terrible guitarist who uses a wah pedal to make things easy and was only famous because of the band he's in. His riffs were also not as good (except for Enter Sandman), and the solos were just ok.

Jason Newsted He joined the band as bassist following Cliff Burton's death and contributed to albums through the 1990s. Known for his powerful live performances and backing vocals, he played a crucial role during the band's commercial peak.

He was underrated because Cliff was there in Metallica. He was a better vocalist than James in the Reload era.

He was the best live performer that Metallica ever had. I wish he never left the band...

A great musician with a great mindset. The band was lucky to have him while they did.

Lars Ulrich As the drummer and co-founder of the band, he has played a major role in the group's development and business decisions. His aggressive and dynamic drumming style has been a defining element of their music.

Incredible drummer. Especially in drum-heavy songs like Master of Puppets. He was the one who reached out to find band members. Without Lars, Metallica quite literally wouldn't exist.

Lars Ulrich is a legend. And I know you guys think I'm crazy, but in actual fact, you are the ones who are crazy. METALLICA would not be METALLICA without Lars. People don't really give him the credit he deserves. For example, in Enter Sandman, his drumming is spot on and so badass, which is why it is one of my favorite songs of all time. And I'm sure that TRUE METALLICA FANS would agree with me. STOP HATING ON LARS!

Robert Trujillo He became the band's bassist in 2003, bringing a highly energetic stage presence. His background in funk and heavy metal has added a unique dimension to the group's later albums.
Dave Mustaine He was the band's original lead guitarist before being replaced in 1983. Despite his short tenure, he contributed to the writing of several early songs.

Dave Mustaine is the BEST. No questions asked. Without Dave, thrash metal and, I dare say, Metallica would not be what it is today. My favorite members are:

1. The Father of Thrash Metal (Dave)
2. Cliff Burton
3. James Hetfield

My top three are the greats of Metallica. The rest are either pretty dang good (Rob and Jason), highly overrated (KIRK!), or just suck (Lars, Bob, and Ron). That is all.

Dave is an incredible musician, there is no doubt about that. However, he was just not the best fit for Metallica, and if he were still with Metallica to this day, then there would be no Megadeth.

Ron McGovney He was the band's first bassist and played on early demos. His time with the group was brief, preceding the arrival of Cliff Burton.
Bob Rock He produced several of the band's most commercially successful albums, starting with Metallica (1991). His involvement extended beyond production, even playing bass on some tracks.

Did the bass on St. Anger after Newsted left and before they hired Trujillo.
