Top 10 Best Punk "Diss Tracks"
No, not hip hop but punk rock "diss tracks". Here is a list of some of the legendary (in the punk world) insult songs. If there is something on the list you like being insulted or called out, don't get all huffy puffy about it. I like Crass, Agent Orange, T.S.O.L.(early), Sex Pistols, The Clash and they all get insulted or called out on this list. Don't take it too seriously. This song really goes after L.A. radio DJ Rodney Bingenheimer. Rodney had a weekly radio show here in Southern California on FM radio station KROQ called Rodney on the ROQ, where he played a lot of local and underground music. Personally, I like Rodney. I remember listening to his show in the early to mid-'80s. He would play bands like Black Flag, The Dickies, The Controllers, Adolescents, X, Agent Orange, etc., a lot of good stuff. I guess the Samoans weren't impressed.
A funny side note to this song: because of Rodney's influence around the local clubs and venues here, this song got The Angry Samoans banned from a handful of places to play. Rodney also vowed to never play them on his show. However, the Samoans got the last laugh. They recorded an EP under a different name and sent it to Rodney. He ended up playing songs from the EP on his show and praised their music.
Going after the lame Nazi punks within the scene.
Song calling out John Lydon, also known as Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols (hence the song title "Rotten" to the Core), and Joe Strummer.
Song about the selling out and killing of the punk scene. Calls out Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols and Patti Smith.
M.D.C. released this shortly after John Wayne's death. They felt people were mourning a not-so-great guy who had expressed what some may perceive to be fascist views.
I'm not sure on the whole story, but this song is about Johnny Thunders. D.I. wrote it after opening for him.
Firing back at the Sex Pistols after Johnny Rotten being his usual self and running his mouth.
Television invited The Damned to open for them in L.A. When they got there, Television told them they weren't needed. So, they were stranded in L.A. Captain wrote Idiot Box as a screw you to Tom Verlaine. It's great because it mimics Television's sound and guitars, and Verlaine's singing.
This song is going after Mike Palm of Agent Orange for threatening to sue The Offspring for ripping off "Bloodstains" in "Come Out and Play." Even though I like Agent Orange and not The Offspring, I think it was lame of them to threaten to sue. Another band, Verbal Abuse, also threatened to sue Poison Idea, claiming "Plastic Bomb" was a rip-off of "I Hate You." Also lame.
Deservedly goes after NOFX and Rancid but is also a tribute song to Timmy Yo.
I think The Meatmen were just "trolling." At the time, T.S.O.L. were known to get into fights, especially singer Jack Grisham, and have violent shows and fans. I'm pretty sure the site won't allow the lyrics to be posted, so I'm not going to attempt it. I think I'm already pushing it with some of the other songs.
