Top 10 Best Comedy Movies of All Time

The best movies for a belly laughing, gut wrenching, tear producing, knee slapping good time. These are the movies that you always end up renting from the movie store if there is nothing new out and will always watch until the credits if you come across them while flipping through the channels.
The Top Ten
1 Dumb and Dumber

It is almost an impossibility for me to come across a comedy film that I genuinely find clever and hysterical from start to finish. Dumb and Dumber is one of those rare comedies that has comic gold in damn near every one of its scenes - even if it's something as subtle as a facial expression or the timing/delivery of a line. D&D is able to take the most ridiculous and DUMB characters and situations and somehow, brilliantly, make a 100% NOT DUMB movie! #1

This is just frickin brilliant. Not only is this my favorite comedy movie, but it's also my favorite movie. I love the second one too, but it was a bit of a disappointment. I was laughing the whole way through, from the sex scene to the dream scene to the toilet scene to the chili scene. I just love the two main characters and the way the bad guys think that they are apart and trained spies! This film rocks, and any bastard who doesn't like this is an idiot!

2 Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Why is Dumb and Dumber higher than this CLASSIC? Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a movie that is funny to almost everyone because it has humor that works the best, random humor. Not only that, but it will remain funny no matter how many times you watch it. Lastly, this is one of the most quotable comedies of all time with infamous lines such as "Your mother was a hamster" or "What is the capital of Assyria? I don't know that! BOOOMMM!" So tell me, people, what is it about Dumb and Dumber that makes it any better than Monty Python and the Holy Grail?

Dumb And Dumber and The Hangover, while great, some people don't find the humor funny. However, Monty Python And The Holy Grail is funny to all audiences. I did an experiment. I watched Dumb And Dumber with some people, and only a few were laughing. I watched The Hangover with some people, and a few more were laughing. I watched Monty Python And The Holy Grail with some people, and every single person was laughing.

3 Airplane!

Should be at least first or second. Can't watch without laughing. Leslie Nielsen is just a comical genius, RIP. Love Jim Carrey and Dumb and Dumber, but it is not funnier than this. Superbad (although crude) is extremely hilarious and should be much higher!

The only movie in this top 10 that deserves a spot. Vacation, Christmas Vacation, Caddyshack, Blazing Saddles, The Naked Gun, Coming to America, The Great Outdoors, Rat Race, and The Cable Guy are the other nine to be included.

What makes it unique is its subtle and random mix of everything. The ability to turn a dramatic moment into a memorable laugh-out-loud time of your life is amazing. The jokes and characters never get old. 9/10

4 The Hangover

Although I think Kill the Boss is even a bit funnier, I also think that Hangover has to be number 1 on this list because of this movie all the other ones were created. Without it, there wouldn't be no Kill the Boss or We're the Millers.

This movie is defining our whole generation!

I love this movie! I think if this ever happened to me, I would definitely be Stu just because of the crap that happens to him throughout the movie! I laugh every time I watch it.

The funniest movie ever. You would not stop laughing through the whole movie and would never get bored of watching it over and over again! Should be #1 on this list!

5 Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy

"If you were a man, I'd punch you. Punch you in the mouth."
"It's illegal in nine countries. Yep, it's made with bits of real panther, so you know it's good."
"60% of the time, it works every time."
"They said no, you can't do that, he's a live bear. He will literally rip your face off."
"By the beard of Zeus!"
"I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books, and my apartment smells of rich mahogany."
"Diversity is an old, old wooden ship that was used in the Civil War era."
"I'm in a glass case of emotion!"
"Knights of Columbus!"
"Great Odin's Raven!"
"Milk was a bad choice."
"Bark twice if you're in Milwaukee."

This is why it should be included in the top ten list of comedies.

Anchorman belongs in the top 5. I love this movie. It's science! My all-time favorite line is when Ron says, Brick, where did you get a hand grenade? and Brick replies, I don't know.

Top 2 easy. Will Ferrell is the best comedy actor of his generation, and this is his best film.

6 The Big Lebowski

To all the people who didn't vote for this: "That's just like, your opinion, man." But "I did not watch my buddies die face down in the muck" just so this movie could get 4th place. It deserves number one because after all, "That rug really tied the room together."

Love it! Haven't actually laughed out loud at a film in ages! Quirky and funny, better than the crap that's current!

This, Princess Bride, and Holy Grail. Sadly I had to go with Holy Grail. I watched it over and over and memorized the film.

7 Borat

The funniest movie I've ever seen (again and again) isn't on this list: "Used Cars" starring Kurt Russell and Jack Warden. So, I'll go with Borat. My father and I watched Borat for the first time together, and we had to pause and rewind the DVD three separate times because we were both literally crying and howling. I've never done that with any other movie. I wish more people could see both movies, and not some of this other unfunny nonsense posted in this list. For the record, all the late '70s - early '80s National Lampoon Movies (official "National Lampoon's...", and those made by alumni - and the list is mightily long) were comedy gold. Ramis and Kenney (writers), Chase and Murray (actors), Guest (improviser) - fantastic movies.

Borat is a million times better than Bruno, which was just a bunch of homosexual garbage. But this is so funny, and a lot of people look like Borat in real life!

Hilarious movie. You have to watch this! Borat is a Kazakhstani journalist who travels to the United States of America. Watch his journey begin.

8 Step Brothers

This movie is truly amazing! Dumb and Dumber at number one?! It should be Step Brothers. This is so funny and shows sibling rivalry at the same time. It's hilarious, and I love Will Ferrell.

Stupid stupid stupid movie, but I just love it so much! How is Dumb and Dumber #1, though? Jim Carrey might be the worst comedy actor ever, and somehow he made millions being just idiotic.

Funniest movie ever! Will Ferrell and John Reilly have really done it! I've seen this movie 5 times, and I always roll on the floor laughing! Stupidity is funny!

9 Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery

Oh my gosh. Every scene in this movie was funny, and not just funny, really funny. Although the other ones have Mini-Me, this is still the best one and the most funny.

Really funny sequel. My dad would always impersonate him all the time. But one question: where is WHITE CHICKS?!?!?!

Perhaps unable to beat out old classics, but at least in the top five funniest movies of all time.

10 Superbad

I love this movie because of its liveliness and madness. It is hilarious and crazy. It shows how geeky teenagers feel and is almost making it positive. Jonah Hill's performance was amazing in this movie, and it should be number 1.

Superbad is funny, but I voted for it because it perfectly illustrates high school students' need for sex, booze, and friends.

This is the funniest movie I have ever watched, easily. It is not only hilarious but also has an awesome plot. Easily #1.

The Contenders
11 Hot Fuzz

Why on Earth is this so far down? Hot Fuzz is an amazingly funny film, with brilliant lines and brilliant acting from Nick Frost and Simon Pegg - possibly the funniest acting duo in HISTORY! Should be at least in the top ten.

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are a match made in heaven. Whoever put them together is a genius, and their films are even better. Both are incredible actors, and I love this film to pieces. It should be much higher on the list.

This has to be one of the side-splittingly hilarious films I've ever seen. It is the best of the three flavours and is full of amazing actors. You cannot go wrong with Hot Fuzz. It has everything anyone could want.

12 Happy Gilmore

I love this movie. It is so much funny. Adam Sandler is funny in his movies. Being an adult, a teen, and a preteen are way much better than being a little girl and a little boy. Little children suck. Adults, teens, and preteens rock.

Adam Sandler is hilarious! This is a great film, such a heartwarming comedy. It makes me laugh every time. Must watch!

It was much better than I thought. In fact, it made me laugh plenty of times!

13 Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

There are reasons why this is funny as hell: 1. The opening scene 2. That scene when he was in the tank saying stuff from Star Trek 3. That scene when he was making his bottom talk 4. That scene when he thought he kissed a man and was trying to throw up, put in an entire toothpaste, burning the clothes he wore and cried in the shower, and he put in an entire pack of chewing gum and finally 5. The ending scene

I watched this movie once on television and laughed out loud over ten times. I was drunk at the time, so my recollection of the comical scenarios is a bit foggy, but I nevertheless must applaud the ingenious comedic minds who orchestrated this masterpiece.

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is by far the funniest movie I have ever seen in my entire life. The movie is wild, crazy, and at some points, more than a bit moronic. Yet it has got a touch of subtle wit to it. This movie is as good as it could ever get.

14 Monty Python's Life of Brian

The first DVD I asked for. I hadn't seen it, and I really wanted to, so I asked for it for Christmas. That year, Monty Python came into my life, and the miracle happened. It was like finding that I was missing a vital organ. Monty Python is my religion now.

Life indeed... The truth about life put in like a genius. The astonishing satire, the crowd, and the relishing end. It's a whole package. If you haven't watched it yet, you are missing out on "LIFE OF BRIAN".

The movie is good, but the Brian song sucks.

15 Shaun of the Dead

Shaun of the Dead should be #1. It's so unique in every way with such funny witty British banter. Shaun of the Dead is the best comedy ever!

Oh god. This movie. Pure gold. I've watched it so many times. Simon Pegg is just amazing. This really, really deserves to be in the top ten!

A film with cool zombies and comedy, and of course, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. I love Ed (Nick Frost) in it. He's so funny. I'm disappointed it's ranked 22. It should be in the top 10.

16 Office Space

Office Space is my favorite movie of all time, even after growing up watching Monty Python, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Jim Carrey, and Adam Sandler movies. It hits the funny bone of the Gen X-er in me because it's about so many things we have dealt with in life. It makes us laugh at ourselves, our careers, and our lives. It's a hidden treasure!

Anyone who has ever worked in an office and has had irritating bosses or colleagues will love, love, love it. I cannot recommend it more.

Probably the most quoted movie to date. People still quote this over a decade later! Now that is something!

17 Animal House

"Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, son." - "Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?". Come on, these were some of the best movie lines ever!

Should be at the top. This is the best comedy movie of all time. John Belushi. It's a shame he had to leave this world so young. But trust me, this movie is worth it!

The greatest comedy film. It's got two things that make it great: The grotesque humor and John 'Bluto' Blutarsky Belushi. Definitely in my top ten comedy list:

1. Animal House
2. Young Frankenstein
3. It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World
4. Manhattan Murder Mystery
5. Blazing Saddles
6. Office Space
7. The Producers
8. Christmas Vacation
9. Vacation
10. Hot Tub Time Machine - yeah, kind of a guilty pleasure. It's hilarious.

18 Caddyshack

With such incredible acting performances from a great ensemble, I think Harold Ramis deserves some kind of comedy medal for not only writing such a hilarious script, but also getting everybody on the same page. Comedic timing is something that sticks out most to me in this one, and not only from the guys who you can just say, "Go out there and do your thing," like Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, and Rodney Dangerfield, but from the entire cast top to bottom.

A very worthy #2. My #s 3-10 could probably get shuffled around depending on what kind of mood I'm in.

Truly hilarious. You've got Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, and the late Rodney Dangerfield all in one movie. Deserves to be higher.

If you're under 30, this is one movie you need to watch. The funniest movie of all time.

19 Ghostbusters

This movie is FANTASTIC! Everybody should watch and like this film. Yes, even though it was not as good as the 1988 film 'Big' (starring Tom Hanks and directed by Penny Marshall) or as good as the 1985 film "Back to the Future" (starring Michael J. Fox and directed by Robert Zemeckis) or even the 2004 Marvel film "Spider-Man 2" (starring Tobey Maguire and directed by Sam Raimi), this film does do an excellent job of keeping me entertained and makes me laugh. I did hope that this film would come in at the top 5, but it is not my problem. So, pick up the phone and call - GHOSTBUSTERS! And remember - "I ain't afraid of no ghosts!"

While there are better comedies out there, it's sad to see this so low on the list, so it has my vote.

When there's something strange in the neighborhood, who you gonna call?

20 Blades of Glory

When I first saw this movie, I practically wet my pants with laughter because it is so funny!

SO FUNNY! I never have laughed so hard in a movie!

I can watch this movie every day. It's so funny.

21 Spaceballs

28? Spaceballs, my favorite movie ever, is number 28?!?! What!?! It is just shameful that Dumb and Dumber is number 1. Dumb and Dumber is DUMB! ANY Mel Brooks movie should be in the top ten. Anchorman, Superbad, and Step Brothers are great, but NOT TOP TEN GREAT! And get The Hangover off of the top ten. Come on, people! Spaceballs is so much better!

Easily one of the best. I had watched this when I was in school. It still is so comical. These are the types of movies - just leave your brain at the door and enjoy.

Should at least be under 20! This is the funniest movie I have ever seen in my whole life! This is totally worth watching, man!

22 This is Spinal Tap

Not only is this a genius movie and the father of mockumentaries. The actors improvised EVERY LINE pretty much. They were told what the scene was to accomplish, and they were never told the "Smell the Glove" cover was supposed to be blacked out. This movie is also the funniest rock parody. The "Moby Dick" drum solo line had me practically wet my pants.

Absolutely genius. You notice little things the more you watch it. Probably the most quotable film of all time. All made for just 2 million dollars. Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer are just so funny. Best comedy ever made.

"How do you dust for prints on vomit?" "A bizarre gardening accident." "Talk about mud flaps. My babe's got 'em." So many great lines. And you can never pick the top 10. The list goes to ELEVEN!

23 The Naked Gun - From the Files of Police Squad!

This movie is absolutely hilarious. The opening scene, the ridiculous baseball scenes (Enrico Pelatzo!), the scene with the evil doctor, and of course the perfect drug bust scene make the movie tops.

This should be in the top 5. This movie is never getting old. The best spoof/parody movie ever!

I love it! The best part is when he sings the national anthem.

24 Blazing Saddles

This is, simply put, the best movie ever made. Period. It does two things that most people will tell you are almost impossible to do in a work of art: centralizing the issue of race, and delivering the art of comedy. If you don't "get it," you are a narrow-minded idiot -- I'm sorry. The ending alone elevates this movie to a different, surrealistic strata, but its ballsy confidence in staring racism and Hollywood clichés in the eye... well, geez -- it's just a great seat-of-the-pants creation by some pretty confident filmmakers. Relax -- Bart and the Waco Kid are the heroes. And, somehow, the bad guys are hilarious and repugnant at the same time. The Waco Kid -- Gene Wilder -- sitting with his popcorn in the last scene... just before he and Bart ride off into the sunset... to that score... well... it pulls all of it together... in a nice happy ending.

Just saw a screening of this last night. Still, the funniest movie I ever saw. There was a sit-down Q and A with Mel Brooks after the movie. Best 4 hrs I've spent in a long time. The audience and I were calling out some of the funny lines during the movie. Would pay to see it again today.

25 Young Frankenstein

This was an awesome, hysterically funny movie. I could watch it once a week and never get tired of it!

This is the funniest Mel Brooks film, and that's saying something.

Put... The candle... Back.

Put... The candle... Back.

Simply a great movie.
