Top Ten Artists with a Time Span of Over 10 Years Between Two Number 1 Hit Songs in Austria
In April 2019, Capital Bra has released his eleventh number 1 hit in Austria in less than one year. With this success, he expanded his record of being the artist with the most chart toppers - the Beatles come in second place with eight number 1 hits, but it took them five years to achieve that.Over the decades, there were a bunch of artists who had two or even three chart toppers, and only a handful of artists who had more, but usually, they occurred within a limited period of time. Often, a huge hype that causes virtually everyone to dig an artist's music is only short lived. Or, if musicians do manage to have a very long lasting career, they tend to have very strong album sales, and maybe a couple of top ten hits, but no blockbuster song.
But it only rarely occurrs that after an entire decade passed, they would drop another song that makes the entire nation go crazy. Yet still... it sometimes happened. This can have various reasons: either they had a spectacular comeback, they had many top ten hits in between that barely missed the top spot and this one time it succeeded, or the song in question is actually an older track that was just re-discovered through a certain event. The reasons are different, but all of the artists on the list suddenly re-appeared atop of the charts over a decade later!
Despite having had countless hit singles that every kid knows and being one of the most famous celebrities of all time in Austria as well, Madonna’s several classic songs were mostly top ten hits, but didn’t top the charts. The first time she managed to reach the top spot on the single charts was with her summery, dreamy pop number “La Isla Bonita” in 1987. It became one of her best known songs, and marked the moment when Madonna emancipated from a Cyndi Lauper-knockoff and bubblegum pop singer to a full blown acknowledged artist that impacted pop music like little other people did. However, it took her 18 years until she would manage to climb atop the Austrian charts with another song. In 2005, her ABBA-sampling, larger than life disco epic “Hung Up” became her second number 1 hit. In between, she had numerous huge songs though.
In the 80s, she rose to fame as the lead singer of the Neue Deutsche Welle band of the same name, Nena refering to both the band and to herself. As they disbanded in the late 80s, Kerner went on to pursue a successful solo career, and became one of the internationally best known German musicians. Kerner had notable chart success in 4 decades in her home country with her low point being the 90s, where none of her albums and singles reached the national Top 10. ...read more.
German singer Nena had a bunch of iconic hit songs that are still on heavy rotation on Austrian radio stations. She is of course the foremost figure of the Neue Deutsche Welle music movement that is no less than the most quintessential era in German music. It should come to no surprise that her international 1983 megaseller “99 Luftballons” was her first number 1 hit in Austria. In the 80s, she had a bunch of other songs that became classics of the decade (even those that initially didn’t chart as highly became well known later on), but then, in the 90s, her sales decreased and she failed to create other songs that would become well known - although in that time she became more experimental with other styles - and it appeared as if by and large, the influential phase of her career was over. That is until the early 2000s when she released her album “Nena feat. Nena” that contained versions of previously released material - and I’m not talking about remixes here, the song ...more
I stick to my opinion that American music star Christina Aguilera is the greatest non-classical female singer of the 21st century, and one of the greatest there ever was. When she entered the stage in 1999 with her number 1 hit “Genie in a Bottle”, it was with a catchy and charismatic pop song that, although she did not yet go full throttle, already showed that she has great potential. Over the years, she would release several top ten hit songs that showed her incredible single talent and that became even more popular than her first chart topper (highlights include the ballad “Beautiful”, which became a classic, and the all star cover of “Lady Marmalade”), but she wouldn’t manage to top the charts again until 2011 with “Moves Like Jagger”, a duet with American pop band Maroon 5.
In 1999 and 2000, when American pop singer Britney Spears was still a teen idol, she had two chart toppers with her singles “...Baby One More Time” and “Lucky”, both of whom are now among her classic tunes. Britney Spears remained one of the best known superstars of her generation who would go on to record many hit songs that entered the top ten and partly formed the sound of pop music in the early 21st century, and whose transformation from innocent girl to seductive vixen inspired other singers to change their image as well. However, she wouldn’t hit number 1 again until 2012, when American producer/rapper will.i.am recorded his danceable techno pop song “Scream & Shout” as a duet with her.
Mariah Carey's first number one hit in Austria was her 1994 rendition of "Without You", originally by Badfinger and made highly popular by Nilsson. Carey's cover was as big as a hit song can be, even bigger than any other version, and became the best selling song of the year over here. However, while she had no less than 18 chart toppers in her home country, the USA, it took her until 2019 to get another number one hit in Austria. Ironically, said song is also from 1994: it’s her holiday classic “All I Want For Christmas is You”. Despite its age, this track didn’t hit the top spot of the charts until 25 years after its initial release, although it annually charted on various positions since 2008. On an interesting note, neither of these two were number one hits in the USA when they topped the Austrian charts.
Although Mariah Carey is a household name and has a lot of media coverage over here as well, she only had surprisingly few hit songs in Austria: next to her two ...more
Drafi Deutscher was a German songwriter and singer who is the mastermind behind several successful music projects, although he usually kept himself in the background and let other artists sing his songs, or used various pseudonyms to hide his identity, which was mostly because his public image wasn’t the best after a couple of incidents when he was drunk. As a solo artist, Drafi Deutscher topped the Austrian charts twice. The first time under his actual name in 1965 schlager song “Marmor, Stein und Eisen bricht”, and another time in 1983 under the pseudonym Masquerade with the English language synth pop song “Guardian Angel”. Although it was generally performed live lip synced by two performers in heavy makeup, it was a solo song by Drafi Deutscher - both the calm, deep vocals and the high, energetic ones were performed by him. The same year, a German language cover of the song by Nino de Angelo called “Jenseits von Eden” also managed to top the charts, and became even ...more
