Formed in 1989 by frontman Marilyn Manson and Daisy Berkowitz, the group was originally named Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids with their theatrical performances gathering a local cult following in the early 1990s. more.

Marilyn Manson is way more darker than Ozzy Osbourne. Really.

The Antichrist Superstar as he is referred to.

Not a metal band.

Some of his antichrist superstar stuff was dark, other than that really is just shock. Still one of my favourite bands, though.
One of his darker/dissonant songs is Tourniquet.

22 Slipknot Slipknot Slipknot is a Heavy Metal band formed in 1995 from Iowa. The band released their first album in 1999 and was well received by critics and fans. The group gained success after the release of their second studio album, "Iowa". more.

Glenn Benton is filled with pure hatred for Christianity. - Metalmaniakkk

24 Burzum Burzum Burzum is an influential black metal solo project of Norwegian musician and writer Varg Vikernes. Burzum came to prominence at the beginning of the Norwegian Black Metal scene in the early 1990s. Vikernes was imprisoned for 21 years for the murder of Mayhem guitarist Euronymous, and charges of church more.

Burzum higher than Cannibal Corpse? Just because he killed someone?

Burzum's riffs are dark and mysterious, especially in the early works. - GREYBOYY

Lead guitarist killed Mayhem's guitarist. 'enough said.

Just because he killed someone? We're talking about music here, not crimes or disgusting acts. - GREYBOYY

Easily one of the darkest bands there. The atmosphere is purely evil and I'm not too sure why CC is above, yeah CC has deranged album covers but death metal often doesn't truly create that dark, sinister mood to it. a band doesn't need to have intense blast beats to be "dark".

27 Cannibal Corpse Cannibal Corpse Cannibal Corpse is a American death metal band from Buffalo, New York, formed in 1988 . The band is known for their graphic album covers, explicitly violent lyrics and song titles like "I C** Blood" The group got into mainstream after performing the song "Hammer Smashed Face" in the 1994 film Ace Ventura: more.

Cannibal Corpse is gory, yes, but I would actually say bands like KoRn and Joy Division are darker, because their lyrics can apply to people living with abuse and depression. Cannibal Corpse lyrics are like a horror movie, while Joy Division and KoRn lyrics are more like a suicide note, so which one is darker?

Have you seen their album art? It's enough to make you puke your guts out.

Not scary at all. Very bland radio rock with brutal death metal elements. Might as well say Nickelback is the darkest band ever.

So gory and violent they make Carcass look like a children's band. - Aragorn98

A really Anti-Christian band. But they're surprisingly not devil worshipers.

Not dark as in scary, but more like dark as in depressing.

You wanna know how depressing their music truly is? Listen to anything off of their self titled debut album and One-X or Life Starts Now and you'll see why they deserve to be on here.

Their darkest songs (in my opinion) are Animal I Have Become, It's All Over, World So Cold, Get Out Alive, Scared, and Overrated.

They're super good at putting emotion in their music. You can really feel the hard feeling in the melody of their songs.

These guys expressed there true pain in their music.

Try to listen to Nutshell or Down in a Hole without crying.

Probably the most depressing band of all time.

Not a metal band.

Hiding in the shadows, that's where Tool hides! You probably haven't heard of it, but when you hear them, the truth is revealed! These guys are some of the darkest here, much darker then My Chemical Romance and Slipknot for sure!

Songs like Schism, Prison Sex, Jimmy, Right in Two, and Pushit are all extremely dark and depressing

Surprised these guys are so low on the list

Charlotte Sometimes, One Hundred Years, A Strange Day and Lullaby are some of the creepiest and Darkest songs I've ever heard. Why aren't they higher on this list?

Pornography is one of the darkest albums

Don't forget Disintegration and Bloodflowers

38 HIM HIM HIM is a rock band from Helsinki, Finland. The band was formed in 1992 by vocalist Ville Valo, and bassist Mikko "Migé" Paananen, under the name His Infernal Majesty.

Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666 and Venus Doom alone make for some pretty dark records. The overall pathos is somewhat eaten away by their lighter records, though.

39 Muse Muse Muse are an English alternative rock band from Teignmouth, Devon, formed in 1994. The members are Matt Bellamy (lead vocal, lead guitar, piano, keyboard), Dom Howard (drums, percussion) and Chris Wolstenholme (bass, backing vocals). I wouldn't quite call muse a dark band. However, they do indeed have their dark moments (Space Dementia, Apocalypse Please, Hysteria etc)
