Fell in love with this man after I watched one flew over the cuckoos nest. His performance was flawless and the movie in general was just a joy to watch. Beautiful film. Performances in the shining, Chinatown, as good as it gets and the departed are just a few other examples of this mans brilliance. Love JD and tom hanks but there quality of performance isn't quite on the same level as jacky boys. For me he's the best. Other notable greats that aren't far off for me include, Al Pacino, Daniel day Lewis, Robert de niro, Gary oldman, gene Hackman, Alan rickman, and Anthony Hopkins. Don't understand how will smith and Tom cruise have managed to secure more votes than the last 4 actors that I mentioned, especially gene Hackman and Anthony Hopkins... Gene Hackman is actually 100th on this list with less votes than Daniel Radcliffe and Andrew Lincoln. What a load of baloney. - Tommy94

Simply put Jack is the man! One the most versatile (great as a psychopath, the best. see The shining, cookoos nest, The Departed). Who the hell are the crack heads that consider Jared Leto or Johnny Depp or even Brando better than Jack? Depp is a very versatile actor but I don't consider him to be great at any of them. Leto? Requime for a dream he played a very good part but thats it really.. Brando, aside from The Godfather and maybe On the waterfront was all that great an actor (he was good in Apocalyps now but had to short a part) - schugeorge

Only #14? Jack Nicholson is THE greatest actor of all time, no contest. He can play anyone and pull it off, and his performance in The Shining always blows me away. His other best performances are in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Chinatown, Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, Batman, (his Joker is better than Heath Ledger, by the way) and As Good as it Gets. He's just so amazing! AND super sexy!

I. CAN. NOT. BELIEVE. JACK. IS. NUMBER. 9! HE SHOULD BE NUMBER 1! JOHNNY DEPP! ARE YOU KIDDING?!?! Has anyone here every seen the movies The Shining? One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest? Chinatown? The Last Detail? Terms of Endearment? As Good as It Gets? The Departed?!?! Seriously! I am a 90's kid not a 70's and even I know that Jack is way better than Johnny Depp any day. I don't know what 12 year old Pirates of the Caribbean lover made this list but this is completely shocking.

Hm I thought long and hard before I voted and jack nicholson has an ability to play to the role better than all when you take into consideration he doesn't have the looks for stardom he certainly well respected as one of the finest in the business I think adam sandler would agree there is a particular way jack nicholson acts he shows so much confidence in every role like the man was born for it

Jack Nicholson is one of the only actors of the past 40 years to be named on this list: Nicholson, De Niro, Hanks, and Day-Lewis. End of story. Watch Easy Rider, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Shining, The Departed, etc. How do you even compare Al Pacino or Johnny Depp to him. They are both GOOD actors, but lack the special thing that GREAT actors have. Plus Pacino is only a gangster, prove me wrong Pacino.

Tough to choose between Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman, Clint Eastwood, and Tom Hanks.

Jack Nicholson is definitely the greatest actor of all time, just watch The Shining and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. - Alex12345269

1. Jack Nicholson 2. Leonardo Dicaprio 3. Tom Hanks 4. Morgan Freeman 5. Gary Oldman 6. Anthony Hopkins 7. Al Pacino 8. Christian Bale 9. Russel Crowe 10. Daniel Day-Lewis 11. Liam Neeson 12. Hugh Jackman 13. Gene Hackman 14. Clint Eastwood 15. Mark Wahlberg 16. Johnny Depp 17. Robert Deniro 18. Robert Downey Jr. 19. Matt Damon 20. Michael caine 21. Jamie Fox 22. Michael Fassbender 23. Denzel Washington 24. Mel Gibson 25. Heath Ledger

It's odd how people think he ain't the best actor in the world. #6, come on guys. He is definitely #1. The Shining, As good as it gets, terms of endearment, one flew over the cuckoo's nest, batman, five easy pieces. He plays roles no one else dares to touch and elevate them to a new level. There's a reason he gets nominated for academy award almost twice each decade. And Gary Oldman at #34, this list is bull.

He is a great actor. Besides his Oscar winning performances in "one flew over the cuckoo's nest' and " As good as it gets" he was flawless in movies like "The Departed", "About Schmidt", "A Few Good Men", and could go on and list would never end.

Definitely the best. No DiCaprio, Depp or Hanks can make those kinds of facial expressions, transfer those feelings of pain, greed and insanity or be so convincingly brutal and gentle depending of the act. He was something that will never happen again in the movie industry, unfortunately.

How the hell is jack Nicholson in the 8th spot? I mean seriously have you ever watched Chinatown or the Shining people? I mean I love johnny depp but he's nowhere near Nicholson's or pacino's level! And how is it that Robert Deniro is nowhere in this list? Or Dustin Hoffman? Come on! - vicmilano

He is the GREATEST ACTOR OF ALL TIME! If the idiot who made this list has ever seen any of his movies, they would put him ahead of johnny Depp, Al Pacino, Tom Hanks, and all those Bollywood actors I've never heard of. I have to admit, he has been somewhat type casted later in his career for the grumpy, chauvinistic, old guy, but his performances are too real. He is the finest actor I have ever seen.

Excuse me? Why is Johnny Depp number 1? Seriously he is above all the greats such as Marlon Brando, Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino and this man. His one performance in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest is better than all of Depp's performances together.

Jack Nicholson is an actor I've always looked up to. To me, he is a man with complete control over his presence and whenever he is on screen his audience is sucked into every move, every word, everything he does.

This man has delivered so many noteworthy performances that it's not even funny. The shining, Chinatown, the departed, one flew over the cuckoo's nest, a few good men, batman, as good as it gets, shall I go on!?

Jack Nicholson was nominated 10+ Academy Awards for his performances over the years. I don't think a single actor placed in a position above him was nominated that many in their life time.

Jack Nicholson continues to surprise and challenge me. He creates new, creative characters, and never picks the same one twice. He is always a pleasure to watch.

Not only has he got an impeccable filmography, but his performances are even better. Whether it's the classics like The Shining, Chinatown or a more recent portrayal such as The Departed or About Schmidt or one of his criminally underseen roles in films like Five Easy Pieces and The Passenger, this man is a god as is power in front of the camera and the authenticity of emotion

All the actors on the list are all great actors, but some actors are a cut above like of Nicholson - DeNiro- Pacino - Brando - Newman, Depp is a favorite of mine also but he does not come close to screen presence and ability like Nicholson.

I believe Jack Nicholson is in the top 5 greatest actors of all time! Tom Hanks does not compare to Jack, especially in the movie, The Shinning. This movie was one of the most suspenseful movies of all time!

Jack Nicholson is king of actors, he should be first. I mean, I like Johnny Depp as much as the next person, but the Shining is my favorite movie, and Jack Nicholson is the best actor.

I think he should probably stay on top: he's one of few actors that only for their presence make the movie great; he's extremely versatile, he can impersonate both a very dramatic character and a comic one, always so naturally.

Classic creep - in a good way, I swear! Not necessarily as versatile in his roles as other actors, but his portrayals of all characters put before him are outstanding.

I still wouldn't want to be stuck in a room with the guy.

Personally my favorite actor. Just sooooo enjoyable to watch on screen. Probably one of the most impressive bodys of work out of any actor.
