Largely Forgotten Great Songs by Female Artists

Ned964
The title is clunky I realize, but I had to get some of these great songs down while I had them in mind, and to share them with whomever may be interested. Please add any that you feel compelled to, so I can check them out.

The Top Ten

1 Smooth Operator - Sade

Smoky room, smooth Jazz and a beautiful woman singing to you. It can't get any better than this. - Ned964

2 Black Velvet - Alannah Myles

While on another list, I saw her name and immediately needed to hear the song. Great stuff, and it makes me thirsty. - Ned964

Makes you thirsty... I wonder if the line: "Mississippi in the middle of a dry spell" has had a subliminal affect... - Britgirl

Anyone who's forgotten this gal is sorely low on testosterone - unless you're female, in which case, you just have a bad memory.

Good one Britgirl. Lol. I hadn't made the connection, but now that you mention it, it's inescapable... - Ned964

Its also the name of a Canadian Whiskey - Ned964

3 Son of a Preacher Man - Dusty Springfield

This song had a little resurgence in the mid 90's due to its inclusion in the Pulp Fiction soundtrack, but if I wanna hear it today, I gotta dig it up. - Ned964

I love this woman's Smokey vocals. This is her best in my humble opinion. - Britgirl

Me too. I looked on a greatest female singers of the sixties (would this make a good Top ten? ) list earlier and of course she was on it. There were some other gals on there I've never heard of (Although I did recognize some of the songs) and I will check it out further soon. Some great stuff in there I had forgotten about. - Ned964

I don't know about other people, but I've never forgotten about this song. Dusty's voice was fantastic! - Gg2000

Two shakes of a lamb's tail

4 Midnight Blue - Melissa Manchester

A great song of trying to save a fragile relationship. Wow this lady can belt out a tune.. - Ned964

5 You're No Good - Linda Ronstadt

Yes, I put this on another list, but it is so good, I will risk being redundant. - Ned964

6 Brass In Pocket - Pretenders

Chrissy Hynde could fill up this list on her own. The ultimate come hither song for any man. - Ned964

7 Angel Of The Morning - Juice Newton

Another song that saw a nice comeback when it was included in the Deadpool soundtrack, but I have to seek it out if I ever want to hear it. This is a cover song, done by many artists, I just prefer Newton's version. - Ned964

Really just a cover. The original by Merilee Rush & the Turnabouts is even more rare these days.

8 Carnival - Natalie Merchant

Although this got some airplay when it was released, I don't hear it much now. An incredibly talented lady. - Ned964

9 Easy for You to Say - Linda Ronstadt
10 It Must Have Been Love - Roxette

Indeed. Lovely song, although it makes my heart ache. - Britgirl

Great, forgotten gem. - Ned964

...and I'd better listen to this, it's been some time - Ned964

The Contenders

11 Landslide - Fleetwood Mac

Maybe Stevie Nicks greatest song. - Ned964

12 Fade Into You - Mazzy Star

Damn that's good - Ned964

13 Running Up that Hill (A Deal with God) - Kate Bush

Excellent Song!

14 You Can't Hurry Love - The Supremes

Oh...blast. I meant to vote for Straight On by Heart. - Britgirl

Ha! No...as much as I like a bit of Motown, I really did intend to vote for Heart. - Britgirl

Had to get one Motown song in there. - Ned964

15 Straight On - Heart

I really really like this song. It came long after I though Heart had done their best stuff. Nice comeback - Ned964

A lot of these songs still get regular airplay if you're on the right station, so I'll go for this one simply because there's a lot more well-known Heart songs out there (most of which are probably even better, mind you. lol) - truckturner

16 Jazzman - Carole King
17 Trouble Me - 10,000 Maniacs

Natalie Merchant - Ned964

18 Right Time of the Night - Jennifer Warnes
19 I Say a Little Prayer - Aretha Franklin

I think Burt Bacharach wrote this, it's either that or he was involved with the Dionne Warwick cover, which I also like very much. - Ned964

20 Crazy for You - Madonna

Ahh...reminds me of my very first crush talking to me at the school Christmas party. Oh the memories. It's a pity I can't remember his name... - Britgirl

I thought this was cheesy when it popped, but have since come to appreciate it's simple beauty - Ned964

21 Rescue Me - Fontella Bass

No comments here yet? What a great song. I'm glad I was reminded... - Ned964

It IS a great song indeed. - Britgirl

22 Dear Jessie - Madonna

This is really the only song by Madonna that I really love. Can't remember the last time I heard it. It seems no one else mentions it either. - Britgirl

I've never heard anyone bring it up either. That's kinda cool, its all yours! If I had to guess which Madonna song you loved before reading this, I would have guessed "La Isla Bonita". - Ned964

23 Who Will Save Your Soul - Jewel
24 Paper Bag - Fiona Apple
25 Midnight at the Oasis - Maria Muldaur
26 Personally - Karla Bonoff
27 Luka - Suzanne Vega
28 Misty Blue - Dorothy Moore

Great song! More R&B needed on this list. Examples: Brenda & the Tabulations - Right On The Tip Of My Tongue (1971). Brenda Payton excellent vocals. Brown Sugar - The Game Is Over. Female trio from Philly and a great lost song from 1976. Mica Paris - My One Temptation (1988) another great artist with a forgotten hit. There are so many lost greats from female R&B artists.

29 Driving - Everything but the Girl

I just love Tracey Thorn's voice!

30 Love Song for a Vampire - Annie Lennox
31 La Isla Bonita - Madonna

Thanks for adding! - Ned964

You're welcome. I added this some time ago, after submitting Dear Jessie. - Britgirl

32 It's a Heartache - Bonnie Tyler
33 Total Eclipse of the Heart - Bonnie Tyler
34 I Need a Man to Love - Janis Joplin

Someone introduced this song to me last year, introduced me to Joplin in fact. I've loved her and her incredible voice ever since. - Britgirl

What a unique singing voice. It's tragic we lost her, so young... I think every girl I've ever known loves her, and I can't remember ever hearing a negative word associated with Ms. Joplin. That's pretty high praise, I think I don't remember this song, I'd better go listen to it - Ned964

35 Superstar - Rita Coolidge

Nice one - Ned964

36 Possession - Sarah McLachlan

Heard the end of this today, it reminded me of what a great song it is - Ned964
