The movie opens with Shrek reading a fairy tale book before ripping out a page, possibly to use as toilet paper. As he emerges from the outhouse, All Star plays, showcasing his daily routine.
Fun fact: All Star was originally meant to be a placeholder until another song was chosen, but test audiences loved it so much that it remained in the movie.
You knew when this song played that you were about to watch one of the best animated films of all time.
You knew right from the moment this opening happened that this wasn't your average fairytale.
After Shrek interrupts Farquaad's tournament to determine which knight will rescue Fiona, Farquaad orders the knights to kill Shrek.
Of course, this doesn't end well for the knights, as Shrek easily defeats them in a wrestling ring, using various wrestling moves and even teaming up with Donkey as a tag partner. He even brings in a chair for some added chaos.

Welcome to Duloc, such a perfect town. Here we have some rules. Let us lay them down.

The Newcomers
After overhearing Fiona talking to Donkey about who could ever love a hideous beast, Shrek immediately thinks she's talking about him and leaves heartbroken, as he was starting to fall for her. The next morning, he confronts her about this, which leads to a falling out.
Shrek, in his frustration, brings Lord Farquaad and his men to take Fiona to Farquaad's castle so they can get married. As Fiona goes off to marry Farquaad, Donkey insists that they stop them, but Shrek is too upset. He tells Donkey to hit the road and returns to his swamp.
While checking on Princess Fiona, Donkey discovers her secret: she turns into an ogre at night. She explains her curse and that the only way to break it is to marry Lord Farquaad and receive true love's kiss.
She laments her hideous appearance and makes Donkey promise not to tell Shrek. Unfortunately, Shrek overhears the conversation and misunderstands, believing Fiona is disgusted by him.
The fact that Lord Farquaad is deciding between three princesses with the help of the magic mirror, while referencing Pina Coladas, makes this scene incredible.
