Top 10 Best Things About the Movie Gladiator

I believe Gladiator is the best movie of all time.

Released in 2000, Gladiator sparked a revival of historical films. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest movies ever, but I believe it goes beyond that. I consider it the best movie of all time.

This list will provide ten reasons why.
The Top Ten
It has a great storyline

This is something every movie must have to contend for my attention. Gladiator has a great storyline. It's not just that, though. They can also boast that they pulled off the revenge storyline well. The story starts with a simple motive and becomes increasingly complex, only to later simplify again. In my opinion, that makes for a good story.

It has iconic scenes and moments

Gladiator is known for some specific moments: the "Are You Not Entertained?" scene, the entire opening sequence, the scene where Commodus kills Marcus Aurelius, the scenes featuring Commodus going insane, and of course, Maximus's reveal to Commodus.

It sparked a revival in historical movies

Gladiator also sparked a new era in historical movies, inspiring films like 300, Troy, Alexander, Kingdom of Heaven, Robin Hood, and many more.

It has great music

Gladiator is known for its great music. In my opinion, it has one of the best musical scores of all time. Simply beautiful.

It features an all-star cast

Both Russell Crowe and a young Joaquin Phoenix deliver exceptional performances. There is absolutely nothing one can fault about their performances.

The film boasts a legendary acting core: Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Oliver Reed, and Derek Jacobi, just to name a few. I won't say it's the best acting core, but it is certainly up there.

It has emotional balance

The movie maintains a perfect emotional balance. It doesn't become bloated by trying to make you cry, yet it also isn't so stale as to leave you feeling indifferent.

The villain has understandable motives

By this, I mean that the audience generally feels sorry for Commodus, and we can somewhat understand his frustration. He does go a bit overboard, but I hope you understand what I mean.

It had high production values

You can tell the filmmakers cared about this movie and wanted to get it right. Not in terms of historical accuracy, as they took many creative liberties, but in terms of making a good film. They clearly weren't in it just for the money.

Maximus is awesome

Maximus is one of the most savage characters in movie history. I loved Maximus, and Russell Crowe was the perfect actor for this role.

It has great fight scenes

The film features great fight scenes, both at the beginning and throughout all of the gladiatorial fights.

The Contenders
Maximus vs. Commodus

One of the greatest rivalries in movie history.
