Best Songs on Soulfly's Omen
Omen is the seventh studio album by Soulfly. It was recorded in November 2009 and released on May 18, 2010, through Roadrunner Records.
The seven figures in the album art of Omen (three figures on the cover of the standard edition and four on the back), created by David Ho, are meant to represent that this is Soulfly's seventh studio album. Each of the seven figures, inspired by the fictional Star Wars creatures known as Tusken Raiders, also represents one of the seven deadly sins through the objects they hold. Cavalera saw Ho's stylized depiction of Tusken Raiders created for LucasArts and requested an album cover in a similar style.
"Rise of the Fallen" features a Static-X-like riff with cyber tones before a sitar signals the beginning of a death metal riff. The song also features Greg Puciato of The Dillinger Escape Plan.
"Great Depression" plays a thrashy riff that sounds like a train derailing before abruptly settling into a Hellhammer-like riff for the chorus.
"Kingdom" is a unique song for Soulfly due to the melodic vocals by Max Cavalera.
"Vulture Culture," with its rhyming title, carries hints of Nailbomb sounds and punk-influenced riffs.
Like the previous albums, Omen includes a sequel to the instrumental track "Soulfly." On this album, it appears as track number seven, stylized in Roman numerals.
It also includes three cover songs as bonus tracks. One of them is a cover of "Refuse/Resist," originally by Sepultura, which Max Cavalera sang during his time with the band.
The other two covers are "Four Sticks" by Led Zeppelin and "Your Life, My Life" by Excel.
