Best Songs on Warrant's Cherry Pie
Cherry Pie is the second studio album by Warrant and was released on September 11, 1990. The album is the band's best-known and highest-selling release, peaking at number 7 on the Billboard 200. The album features the hits "Cherry Pie," "I Saw Red," "Uncle Tom's Cabin," and "Blind Faith."The title track, "Cherry Pie," is Warrant's best-known song and was dedicated to Don Ienner, the president of Sony Music Entertainment US at the time. The dedication was likely influenced by the record company's pressure to create a marketable rock "anthem." Initially, the record was completed without the song, but the label requested an additional track to boost its commercial appeal. Vocalist Jani Lane responded by writing "Cherry Pie" in just 15 minutes.
Bassist Jerry Dixon and guitarist Joey Allen, who believed the album was already finished, were participating in a charity golf tournament in Denver when they were called back to Los Angeles to complete the song. The single features a string of metaphorical references to sex and bears melodic similarities to Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar on Me" and Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'n' Roll."
The guitar solo on "Cherry Pie" was performed by Poison's guitarist, C.C. DeVille. At the end of the solo, a vocal aside humorously acknowledges a "trained professional." While the song is widely regarded as a rock anthem, the band members themselves reportedly dislike the track, feeling it overshadows the other songs on the album.
"Cherry Pie" has been featured in various forms of media, cementing its status as a cultural touchstone. The song appears in the video game Guitar Hero II, as Nancy Gribble's cell phone ringtone on King of the Hill, and in episodes of Family Guy, The Cleveland Show, and Mission Hill (specifically episode 12). It also features in the films Grown Ups 2 and Kickin' It Old School (2007), as well as in an advertisement for XM Radio. On May 1, 2007, "Cherry Pie" was also performed on ECW's Extreme Expose.
