Top Ten Songs that Topped the Austrian Ö3 Charts in 2010

Let's get a bit nostalgic, and take a trip back to the beginning of the decade.

This list is not about the most successful songs in Austria in 2010, and not about the best Austrian songs of 2010. This list is about the best songs that have at one or more points topped the Austrian single charts in 2010.

The Top Ten
1 Bad Romance - Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga's dark disco melodrama rightfully became her signature song next to "Poker Face". An extravagant song, it is as sophisticated as poppy, as artful as catchy, making Lady Gaga arguably the greatest pop artist of her generation.

From November 27th 2009 to January 21st 2010.

2 Love The Way You Lie - Eminem & Rihanna

Both Rihanna and Eminem had been associated with domestic violence, which was observed with large media interest. Rihanna was physically abused by Chris Brown, Eminem has repeatedly rapped about killing fantasies against his ex-wife Kim.
Their collaboration came out as a conscious song that shows the oddities of an abusive relationship. The female role gets brutally assaulted, but still somehow feels love for her husband, the male role also likes or loves his partner, but nevertheless anger always overcomes him. It's not a positive or optimistic song, but a realistic one.

From September 24th to October 28th.

3 Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) - Shakira

With "Waka Waka", Shakira delivers a summer hit that manages to completely supersede 2001's "Whenever Wherever" as her signature song and since gets almost daily airplay, at least on Austrian radio stations. The song, which was used as an anthem for the FIFA world cup of 2010, best embodies the true meaning of such events, which is not ranting by fans that their country's team didn't win, but people from all around the world gathering and giving their best. The song is a positive and truly uplifting summer song that does not try too hard to sound cheerful, but naturally is.

From June 25th to August 5th.

4 Oida Taunz! - Trackshittaz

If German language Europe ever had an answer to scene, it was probably the Austrian duo Trackshittaz. Mixing party techno beats with rapping and trashy lyrics, this was seen as cool back in 2010 when everyone was on the social network Netlog (not MySpace) instead of Facebook. I haven't listened to them back then, but plenty of teens and kids did, and they even participated in the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest. Retrospectively, they were fun. As I said, trashy, but still quite entertaining for what they are.

From November 12th to 18th.

5 Alors on danse - Stromae

First of all, up to this point I didn't know there was a version with Kanye West as a featured artist.
Secondly, as much as I like Kanye, Belgian rapper, singer and producer Stromae does very well on his own. The calm, slow and deep vocals float perfectly hypnotic, echoing yet somehow stomping beat, so it creates a really cool, laid back feel.

From March 26th to April 29th.

6 Just the Way You Are - Bruno Mars

This is simply a well written indie pop ballad by a singer who has a good singing voice. Not more, not less.

From November 26th to December 2nd.

7 We No Speak Americano - Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP

This is one of those songs that went viral, not only on YouTube, but on people's phones. One in the class had it, sent it to another who sent it to yet another and so on. It is a techno swing song with an earworm post-chorus. There are several of those, it's okay.

8 The Time (Dirty Bit) - The Black Eyed Peas

I know I may be the only one on here, but I really liked The Black Eyed Peas. Will.i.am's funky production was great, especially on "Monkey Business" and "Elephunk", and their multicultural approach of unity and having fun times more than made up for basic lyrics. When they released "The E.N.D.", they changed towards electronica, but I still liked it because they fooled and experimented around with all kinds of effects and sounds and that was cool to listen to. But "The Beginning" deeply disappointed me. It was a generic house pop album that was like everyone else on the radio, without the qualities that made me like them before. "The Time" is no exception there.

From December 10th 2010 to January 27th 2011.

9 Only Girl (In the World) - Rihanna

Between 2008 and 2013 a lot of pop songs sounded the same, they were based around the same house drum kits and HandsUp synth lines, and had extremely similar melodies, all inspired by David Guetta. Many pop singers and poppy rappers who previously had personality now started to imitate this sound, even such talented ones as Christina Aguilera. Rihanna was no exception, and so this song sounds like heard several times before. Not bad but just... generic. I am happy we have much more diversity again.

From October 29th to November 11th, then again from November 19th to 25th.

10 Don't Believe - Mehrzad Marashi

Marashi just recently won "Deutschland sucht den Superstar", the German edition of "American Idol" when this track was released, and like every singer who won there, he got a soft and easy digestible pop song written and produced by Dieter Bohlen. Like all of them until today, it was very successful and has topped the charts, but after one album he disappeared into obscurity.

From April 30th to May 27th.

The Contenders
11 Tik Tok - Ke$ha

I know that since her most recent record her image suddenly changed to that of being one of the greatest recent stars, but still, why was she considered pop and Millionaires was considered scene? Their style is really similar when this song dropped. This is no hate towards each artist, I am just wondering.
"Tik Tok" is an acceptabled party anthem. Nothing great, but not bad.

From January 22nd to March 25th.

12 Wavin' Flag - K'naan

This song would actually be really good due to its lyrics that capture the true spirit of sports events (from the point of view of someone who isn't into sports) to a great tune. But I simply overplayed this track so much when it was released that to me it lost all its appeal, but that's nothing to blame the artist for.

From May 28th to June 24th.

13 Barbra Streisand - Duck Sauce

A chant taken from Boney M's "Gotta Go Home" was looped over stomping techno kicks. That is pretty much it. Nothing more to say about it. Original song much preferred.
