Top 10 Most Feared Wild Predators

You're never really at the top of the food chain when these predators are around. They're fast. They're smart. They're ruthless. They don't just hunt to survive. They dominate. Some strike from the sky with surgical precision. Others lurk below the surface, silent and unseen until it's way too late. Then there are those who charge straight at you with the kind of raw power that makes your instincts scream before your brain even catches up.

This list is where you weigh in. Which predator rules them all? Is it the one with the sharpest bite, the deadliest ambush, or the sheer nerve to take down prey ten times its size? Vote for the hunters that give you chills and see which ones other people can't stop thinking about when they hear something move in the dark.

The Top Ten
  1. Killer Whale

The Orca, or Killer Whale (Orcinus orca), is a toothed whale belonging to the oceanic dolphin family, and is its largest member. Recognizable by its distinctive black-and-white coloring, the Orca is a cosmopolitan species found in all oceans, from polar to tropical regions.... read more

As the name suggests, the killer whale is a deadly predator, combining remarkable skill with awesome physical power. Orcas have a number of ingenious techniques in their hunting arsenal, giving them one of the most diverse diets of all aquatic predators.

For example, they are fond of knocking seals and penguins from ice floes to seize them as they fall into the water. They have also been known to intentionally beach themselves in order to reach seals onshore. Highly social animals, killer whales tend to live in pods made up of dozens of individuals working cooperatively to snag prey. Some have even been known to successfully prey on great white sharks.

  2. Siberian Tiger

The Siberian tiger, also known as the Amur tiger, is a tiger population primarily inhabiting the Sikhote-Alin mountain region in the Russian Far East. A smaller population also exists in the southwest Primorye Province. It is the largest extant tiger subspecies and one of the most endangered.

It has been shown over and over that tigers reign supreme as the real king of the jungle. They are bigger, stronger, more ferocious, etc.

The tiger is undeniably one of, if not the greatest land predator on the planet. I've seen a Bengal tigress hold off two lions. Sure, different fights have different results, and there's probably evidence that lions can kill tigers, but overall, the tiger will win more often than the lion. Even Bengal tigers can take down crocodiles, while Siberian tigers have taken down male Kodiak bears, which are far bigger and stronger than the tiger.

No offense, but some of you need to get your facts straight before you vote.

    P.S.

I am well aware that lions are incredibly impressive predators, but male lions really only have to fight other lions for possession of their pride. After that, it's basically naps and meals.

  3. Great White Shark

The great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias), also known as the white shark, white pointer, or simply great white, is a species of large mackerel shark found in the coastal surface waters of all the major oceans. It is notable for its size, with larger female individuals growing up to 6.1 m (20 ft... read more

Any animal that has the misfortune of being preyed upon by the great white shark stands very little chance of surviving the attack. This animal is No. 1 on our countdown for its remarkable predatory abilities.

With its streamlined body and strong jaws, the great white is a powerful animal. It is a fast swimmer and an agile aquatic acrobat, able to leap high out of the water to surprise its prey. The great white shark also has multiple rows of sharp, serrated teeth, each being replaced as soon as one is lost. In fact, a single shark can go through more than 50,000 teeth in its lifetime.

Great whites typically begin their attacks with a single punishing bite. The shark then waits for its victim to be weakened by the wound before it returns to eat - a technique that allows the predator to feed in relative safety.

  4. African Lion

This animal is known as the "king of the jungle," and for good reason. Lions hunt some of the largest prey on Earth, including buffalo and wildebeest. Part of their terrific success as predators comes from the fact that they cooperate in their kills.

Lions live in social groups called prides, and all members work together in the hunt. Young lions learn their place in the pride early in life by play-fighting, which teaches them the skills they'll need for the hunt and determines what role they are most suited to perform. Lions' hunting success rate is only about one in five, but those odds are impressive when you consider that their prey species are massive creatures with plenty of fighting power of their own.

  5. Gray Wolf

Gray wolves are not only among the smartest animals on Earth - smarter than any animal on this list except possibly the killer whale - they are also among the top distance runners in the animal kingdom, capable of continuing a chase for hours longer than any of these other animals. The wolf is therefore not only highly social, running in packs up to 30 strong, but also a highly intelligent animal. It will virtually never stop chasing you.

Gray wolves have it all. They're smarter, faster, stronger, hunt in packs, and they can swim. Can a killer whale do all that? I think not! But anyway, I am happy that the gray wolf is on the list. They definitely deserve it.

  6. Polar Bear

The polar bear is a carnivorous bear whose native range lies largely within the Arctic Circle, encompassing the Arctic Ocean, its surrounding seas, and surrounding land masses. It is the largest land carnivore and is well adapted to life on sea ice. Polar bears primarily hunt seals and are classified... read more

Polar bears are by far the most powerful land predators on earth. They kill seals and walruses and can pull a 1-ton beluga whale out of the icy ocean. No other land carnivore can match the power of a polar bear. Kodiak bears are number 2, grizzly bears are number 3, and Siberian tigers are number 4.

My sister-in-law is Inuit, or Inuk for one, and her father, who was a hunter, told her that one day they hunted a 2,000 lbs, close to 12 feet, polar bear. Just imagine the power of such a bear. I know Inuits are big storytellers, but a few other people who were there say the same story.

  7. Saltwater Crocodile

The saltwater crocodile, also known as the estuarine crocodile, Indo-Pacific crocodile, marine crocodile, sea crocodile, or informally as saltie, is the largest of all living reptiles. It is also the largest riparian predator in the world. Adult males can exceed 20 feet in length and weigh over 2,200... read more

Saltwater crocodiles, or salties, deserve to be at the top of the list because they have no natural predators other than humans. These formidable animals can grow up to 23 feet in length, with some unverified reports suggesting they can reach 33 feet. They prey on anything that comes into their territory, including animals larger than themselves. Unlike killer whales, saltwater crocs can hunt in saltwater, brackish water, freshwater, and even on land, making them highly adaptable and hard to escape.

Saltwater crocodiles also have the strongest bite force in the world, even rivalling that of a T. rex. They can kill a shark, including a full-grown great white, without needing a group, showcasing their strength and hunting prowess. This makes them formidable predators compared to other apex hunters like killer whales, lions, and tigers.

Though they may not always rank as the number one predator on lists, saltwater crocodiles hold a special place as one of the most dangerous animals on the planet. Their ancient ancestors once faced off against prehistoric giants like the megalodon and tyrannosaurs. Today, they continue to challenge apex predators like lions, tigers, and even humans. This legacy, along with their unparalleled adaptability and power, truly cements the saltwater crocodile as one of Earth's top predators.

  8. Grizzly Bear

The grizzly bear, less commonly called the silvertip bear, is a North American subspecies of the brown bear. It is found in parts of the United States and Canada, particularly Alaska and the Rocky Mountains. Grizzlies are known for their large size and distinctive shoulder hump.... read more

The grizzly bear, also known as the brown bear, is probably the most feared animal in North America. This powerful predatory animal can stand 7 feet tall and weigh more than 800 pounds. Its strong limbs and huge paws can kill a man in a single swipe, and its powerful crushing jaws allow it to feed on a variety of foods, including large mammals.

Grizzlies are also strong swimmers and fast runners. Coming face to face with this animal in the wild can be a harrowing experience, but the best response is to stand tall and resist the urge to run. These animals have been clocked at more than 40 miles per hour, and running away from them can trigger their chase response.

  9. Bengal Tiger

One of the few animals on a very short list of predators that actively hunt human beings. A true man-killer!

It should be here. It is the biggest and most ferocious cat of all.

    These animals are scary. Assassins.

  10. Black Mamba

The black mamba is a species of extremely venomous snake in the family Elapidae, native to parts of sub-Saharan Africa. It is known for its speed and potent venom, which can be fatal without treatment. Despite its name, the snake's coloration is usually brown or olive, with a dark inky mouth that gives... read more

The most fearsome animal in all Africa may well be the black mamba, the giant venomous snake found throughout the southeastern portion of the continent. It gets its name from the black skin on the inside of its mouth, which it displays just before it strikes.

These animals are usually quite shy but can be extremely aggressive when confronted. When they do attack, they tend to strike their victims repeatedly, releasing a lethal mix of neurotoxin and cardiotoxin. In the past, a bite from a black mamba was 100 percent fatal. Now, that figure is decreasing due to the increased use of anti-venom throughout the continent.

  11. The Newcomers
  12. ?

    Wolverine

No animal is more feared pound-for-pound (outside of possibly the mosquito), nor are they able to take down other apex predators so much larger than it, than the wolverine. For example, moose, caribou, wolves, and even bears!

Plain and simple, no (non-poisonous) predator is pound-for-pound more dangerous and deadly than the wolverine.

  13. ?

    American Badger

Badgers are short-legged omnivores in the family Mustelidae, which also includes otters, polecats, weasels, and wolverines. They are known for their burrowing habits and live in complex underground setts. Badgers are found in various regions, including North America, Europe, and Asia.

  14. The Contenders
  15. Cheetah

The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is a large cat native to Africa and central Iran. It is the fastest land animal, capable of reaching speeds between 80 and 128 km/h (50 to 80 mph), with the fastest reliably recorded speeds being 93 and 98 km/h (58 and 61 mph). The cheetah has adaptations for speed, including... read more

This is a very graceful cat with extreme speed. They have a high bite force and sharp claws, which enable them to be one of the best predators.

  16. Nile Crocodile

The strongest reptile in the world. It can kill anything, including lions and hyenas, with the strongest bite force in the world.

  17. Bald Eagle

The bald eagle is a bird of prey found in North America. A sea eagle, it has two known subspecies and forms a species pair with the white-tailed eagle. It is the national bird and symbol of the United States of America.

  18. Hyena

Hyenas, or hyaenas, are carnivorous mammals belonging to the family Hyaenidae. With only four extant species, they represent the fifth-smallest biological family in the order Carnivora. Despite their small number, hyenas play a vital role as both predators and scavengers in their ecosystems.

Hyenas have one of the most powerful jaws in the world. Their bite is significantly tougher than a lion's, and hyenas are pack hunters, giving them an extra edge.

Hyenas are actually second only to lions as top land predators.

  19. Golden Eagle

Eagles are the best birds. They're strong, fast, and agile. It's no wonder the US chose a bald eagle to symbolize their country.

They can kill wolves, foxes, and deer easily. They can fly at 80 mph and dive at 150 mph.

They feast on everything and cannot be stopped!

  20. Falcon

Falcons are birds of prey in the genus Falco, which includes about 40 species. These birds are widely distributed on all continents except Antarctica, although closely related raptors did occur there during the Eocene period.... read more

  21. Green Anaconda

  22. Leopard

The leopard is one of the five "big cats" in the genus Panthera. It is among the most adaptable and widespread big cats due to its camouflaged fur, opportunistic hunting behavior, broad diet, and the strength to carry heavy carcasses into trees.... read more

If you're in Mozambique, they might come into your house and kill you in your sleep. I love leopards anyway. They have really cute cubs!

They're basically animal assassins - really silent but excellent at killing.

  23. Jaguar

The jaguar (Panthera onca) is a large cat species and the only living member of the genus Panthera that is native to the Americas. It is the largest cat in the Americas and the third largest cat species in the world, behind only tigers and lions.... read more

They are to be feared and respected. These cats can take down massive anacondas (if working as a team), black caimans, and even black bears. There are various photographs, videos, and pictures of proof relating to this. Their immensely powerful bite can crush turtle shells as if they were twigs.

There was a case where a jaguar stalked and nearly killed a child. These instances are rare but can go unrecorded and are not uncommon with habitat encroachment. It would be too horrifying to comprehend if these cats got a taste for human blood.

It's not all about speed. You've gotta think about stealth hunters too! Jaguars are the third biggest cat after tigers and lions. I'm not saying that they should definitely be number one. That's just my opinion, but cut the jaguar some slack, okay? Plus, have you seen jaguar cubs? They're, well, cute!

  24. Komodo Dragon

The Komodo dragon, also known as the Komodo monitor, is a large species of lizard found in the Indonesian islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores, Gili Motang, and Padar. It is the largest living species of lizard, capable of growing up to 10 feet long. Komodo dragons are carnivorous and have a venomous bite... read more

The largest of all lizards, the Komodo dragon is a mighty reptile that weighs up to 300 pounds and can reach a length of more than 10 feet. This animal takes our No. 6 spot for having multiple predatory advantages: speed, strength, and the tenacity to bring down prey species twice its size.

They also have a toxic bite. Any victim that survives a Komodo dragon attack is likely to succumb to their wounds soon after. Komodos mainly hunt by ambushing their prey, but they are also fast runners and good swimmers. What's more, their incredible predatory skills are matched by an equally impressive ability to consume meat, up to half their own body weight in a single meal.

  25. Coyote

Coyotes are canines native to North and Central America. They are highly adaptable animals and can survive in a wide range of environments, including forests, grasslands, deserts, and even cities.

They are similar in appearance to domestic dogs but tend to be smaller, with pointed muzzles, erect... read more

Extremely fast and adaptable, these brilliant animals should be way ahead of the wolf. Wolves only exist due to the good graces of mankind. Coyotes are more than survivors. They are thrivers.
