21 Appalachian Winter

Nowhere near black metal - Ananya

22 Einherjer

Einherjer is not so much a "Black Metal" band, but more a viking metal band, kinda like Bathory by the way.
They may have some BM influences but to call them BM is wrong.

23 Rancid Abomination

Hell yeah.. Kickass Newengland Style Thrashy Atmospheric Power metal influenced Black Metal! Disgusting Lyrics Too! About time a New England Band was put on this list. The only other black metal band from Massachusetts I know is Obsidian Tongue and they are no Rancid Abomination. Obsidian tongue didn't develop a new style of BM. Rancid Abomination DID! Should be in the Top 5 with Windir and some others. It's not quite Windir good but... Close. - damianichabod

25 Summoning

Summoning is 100% AWESOME. ALL "lord of the rings" fans REALLY should hear this bands music. THEY make black metal AWESOME.

Greatst Epic Black Metal Band from Austria!

These guys are amazing I mean come on stronghold is legendary and lost tales is one of the best BM eps I have ever heard

Summoning have never maken a mistake. Both the sound from lugburz or everything minas mirgul and above are amazing. Incredible stuff and have inspired me to write almost an entire album full of lyrics! Summoning and immortal should have the first and second spot.

26 Carach Angren Carach Angren Carach Angren is a symphonic black metal band from the Netherlands, formed by two members of the now-defunct bands Inger Indolia and Vaultage.

Top 5 for sure these guys are amazing

The everything on this band is amazing.
The vocals are possibly the most listenable of any black metal band I've ever heard, alongside Darkthrone.
The symphonies are breathtaking, and the lyrics perfectly match the atmosphere given off by said symphonies.
Drums are no slouch either, with very well structured parts and an insanely talented player.
Guitars could stand to shine a bit more, though.

Best black metal band to date, the lyrics the symphonic bits, the guitar, the screams. everything fits together in one masterpiece.

Best symphonic black metal band ever existed to date, symphonies are just flawless. I am shocked how the band isn't even in top 10.. I think those who haven't listened Carach Angren should rot in hell.

27 Wolves in the Throne Room Wolves in the Throne Room more.

For the longest time black metal had become really stagnant and most of the new bands were just recycling the old and not being any innovative until the genre. Until Wolves in the Throne Room arrive and took black metal to new places. They are by far the best modern black metal bands to date.

28 Ulver

They might not be black metal anymore. But you can't deny the brilliance of their albums. Bergtatt is an amazing black metal album that I find as underrated.

Bergtatt is the best black metal album ever. Period. No one comes close

They aren't black metal anymore, but Bergtatt is one of the best albums ever, and Natten's Madrigal is also. To see them at #41 is shameful.

47? Come on, I mean, ok they aren't black metal anymore, but there's one argument that they should be in top 30-20, and that is "Bergtatt: Et Eeventyr I 5 Capitler"

29 Hellhammer Hellhammer Hellhammer was a Swiss extreme metal band from Nurensdorf, active during 1981–1984. They are regarded as a key influence on black metal, and one of the founders of death metal.

My favorite proto black metal band. 1st wave is obviously the best and I HATE IT when people say " well it's not really black metal, more thrash or speed etc". They just don't sound like 2nd wave. But Hellhammer is my favorite. I'm sorry, but they should have stuck to hellhammer rather than change to Celtic Frost... that's my opinion - Rusty665

So black and depressing

Old school 1st wave bm one of my fave bands

30 Old Man's Child Old Man's Child Old Man's Child is a Norwegian black metal band from the city of Oslo. The band is the brainchild of Galder who is the only permanent member of the band now.

53? They must be higher. Hell, anyone would vote for them if they knew they shared the same frontman as Dimmu Borgir - ryanrimmel

His debut solo album is incredible - ryanrimmel

32 Rotting Christ Rotting Christ Rotting Christ is a Greek extreme metal band formed in 1987. They are noted for being one of the first black metal bands within this region, as well as a premier act within the European underground metal scene.

Hail to the Greek Gods!

They shaped black metal sound in early 90's, but they also moved forward and ahead of everyone else by forging their own unique lyrical 'solar system' which changed the perception of 'black metal in General.

Very unique and very good as well. Defiantly one of the best so underrated

Absolutely exquisite and exotic, the most unique sound in metal, fullstop.

Their style is usually called 'blackgaze' . The San Francisco-based group began as a two-piece with George Clarke and Kerry McCoy, who recorded more.
