A Song of Ice and Fire Series - George R.R. Martin

The reason why LOTR and Harry Potter are above A Song of Ice and Fire is because people are used to reading and enjoying good vs. e vil/dualistic stories. A Song of Ice and Fire is both loved and despised for the fact that it is often gritty and bizarre, and full of excessive violence, death, sex, with a seemingly realistic history. A Song of Ice and Fire is an anti-dualistic-thinking series, George R.R. Martin does not blatantly choose a main character, or a strictly good character because he knows humans are not like this. A Song of Ice and Fire plays from tons of character perspectives so we can see and experience different peoples motives and feelings. Many complain GRR adds to much death, but this is only because of his amazing characterization skills; the reason many hate that he just "randomly kills characters" is because he is the master of sympathy, A Song of Ice and Fire is an incredibly humbling read that gives people a more modest perspective of life, and I ...more - ethangrossman5

The best fantasy series I have ever read. Character development is amazing, timeline is perfect, a plot that turns and changes -- Trust me.. You will never see it coming, alliances, betrayals, and an entire world of characters with the best history and development within each one that I have ever seen. I went to bed thinking about this book, and dreamed about it. Enjoy.

Although I like Harry Potter better in terms of personal preference (because I grew up with it), A Song of Ice and Fire is undoubtedly better written with many more plot complexities and a ton more of character depth. It is certainly gritty and not for the fainthearted but still deserves the number one spot.

This series has multiple plots unlike most of the books on the list, there is more suspends and the reader rarely knows where the danger will be coming from. I also like the fact that there is no clear hero and thus the reader is left doubting who will eventually win the war.

Absolutely spectacular! George R. R. Martin has a fantastic way of keeping you hooked into the story with the way he bases his chapters around certain characters. You'll never want to put it down!

Unquestionably the best. This series has made made an enormous impact on the fantasy genre on the same scale that Tolkien did with his Middle Earth novels. This isn't just another bestseller people; this is one for the history books.

Not even a fair comparison, by far the best book series I have ever read. Incredibly intricate plot, but doesn't require an English degree to follow. Characters are incredibly interesting, and are often neither good nor bad.

There is no greater work of fantasy. The gritty characters and shades of grey create a world that is so easy to get lost in. It feels as if you might meet one of the characters in real life they are so well imagined.

Simply amazing scope. The depth of every character is amazing. Of the thousands of players in the game, they all have a story.

I didn't like the whole thing at first with all the nudity, women abuse and fierce sexual scenes disturbing however it amazes me that how it connects with the reality we're living - -Has-

Best and most epic series ever. Martin reaches far and wide and manages to tell the story of an entire world through the eyes of his many players in the game of thrones.

A great read, but it's the charcters that draw you into the story... Massive plot twists to change the landscape of the story constantly.

The Best series I have ever read. Best kind of Addiction. You will never stop reading and will crave for more. Waiting for the sixth book.

BEST EVER!
AN EPIC SERIES.. MISS THIS AND ITS YOUR LOSS.
George R. R Martin, you are my favorite write and always will be.

Undoubtedly the most epic & enjoyable fantasy series in the world, if one is competent & capable of it. The other series ( except LOTR ) are no match to it, in terms of storyline, complexity, character development, historical view & epic, badass battles...

Far better than any of the others on this list. George R.R. martin is simply a better writer.

The best... ever
and as it shows us winter is coming

These are the BEST books of all time. Such a intricate world grrm has set up!. I just reread the first book for the 3rd time and am still finding new details I hadn't caught before

Best thing I ever read! the first thing I'll do when my children are old enough to fully understand it, is give them these books and relive with them the amazing journey

Definitely better than Harry potter series and must be put after LOTER not after such a (... ) novel like Harry potter!

Should be #1. This has been the best series I have every read. He doesn't stick to the normal sci-fi/fantasy format, which is refreshing.

Just purely in a league of its own. Doesn't take any Tolkien elements it just focuses on realism. When the prologue begins beyond the Wall you can almost feel the biting cold and gloom of the place and the charachters are some of the best to ever be concieved in the genre.

Fantastic! It is epic in every way!
George R.R. Martin is the greatest writer out there still alive!
Deserves the first place!

Ok. ASOIAF is definitely the best fantasy novel ever written! People should stop comparing it with LOTR, because they are completely different. The reason I love it is because of the characters. They are so real. No character is fully black or white. The story line is not predictable, which I absolutely love. This is a must read for every fantasy lover. Hey, what is Harry Potter doing above ASOIAF anyway? IT surely is an amazing series, but better than ASOIAF?! Oh please.
