He should be number one he's the only one to do everything himself!
MJ didn't write all his songs I have 10 albums of MJ and I don't see him everywhere!
Prince is a singer, songwriter, dancer, guitarist, drummer, pianist...

Jackson is actually in front of him twice.

Yes, should be top 5 definitely. Who are these people saying Madonna and MJ in front of Prince for songwriting?

88 Conor Oberst

Character portraits, cynical and heartfelt love ballads, intimate confessionals, sardonic political there a current songwriter pulling off the risks Conor Oberst takes with such aplomb? I don't think so. His album "I'm Wide Awake It's Morning" is one masterpiece after another.

89 Passenger Passenger Michael David Rosenberg, better known by his stage name Passenger, is an English singer-songwriter and musician.

Best in the world, his writing has so much meaning and storyline that all these other songwriters can't even compare.

Every song is a treat for the mind and imagination.. The capacity of his songs to make you not just listen to what he is saying but seeing what he wants to show you.. It's just amazing listening Passanger..

Just listen to "You Really Got Me", "Waterloo Sunset", "Dedicated Follower of Fashion", "David Watts", "Sunny Afternoon", "Days", "Lola", "Apeman" and others 40 songs at the same songwriting level and you'll see why I voted for him.

Anybody that can rhyme Dracula and vernacular gets my vote. Best British songwriter, bar none. Major influence on both heavy metal and punk rock. The thinking man's rock star.

No wonder he is this low, not enough people have even listened to his and Kinks' achievements in music.

94 Avril Lavigne Avril Lavigne V 2 Comments
95 Bono Bono Paul David Hewson, known by his stage name Bono, is an Irish singer-songwriter, musician, venture capitalist, businessman, and philanthropist. His original nickname was Bono Vox which means "big voice".

Can't believe bono is at 47, he's a way better songwriter then mark hoppus and mariah carey. Also a better showman

Of course, that Bono item on this list is not fair, he deserves to be in TOP 3!

Bono is one of the greatest live frontmen of all time and though he isn't much of a musician (he can hardly play guitar), he's a solid songwriter, a great showman, and a truly amazing human being outside of U2.

96 Mark Hoppus Mark Hoppus Mark Allan Hoppus is an American musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, and television personality best known as the bassist and co-lead vocalist for the pop punk band Blink-182. Born in Ridgecrest, California, Hoppus spent his childhood moving back and forth between his mother and father's more.

I am a huge fan of Blink-182, but if you really want to hear great songs written by Mark then you have to listen to Plus 44. They only released one album, but you can also find almost all of the songs done acousticly and they are masterfully written and performed.

97 Townes Van Zandt

This list is retarded. It should go Dylan, Townes, Lennon, Cobain. Townes is only known to music officinados because he never saught commercial success and believed his songwriting would suffer if he did. He was poorly produced but is amazing in his live album. Scarily there are many similarities between Cobain and himself. He was often depressed, wrote brilliant melancholy lyrics with a hint of humorous sarcasm. Dylan famously had downtown Austin closed off so Townes could come over in his camper and Dylan eagerly went aboard his camper and requested Townes to play for him. Not jam together but play for him cause Dylan was a die hard fan. Steve Earle should also be up on the list. His mentor not surprisingly was Townes. Enough said.

Ryan Tedder is such an amazing and talented guy! He has a voice as smooth as velvet and an amazing ability to come up with meaningful and powerful song lyrics! He is really nice and should be higher up on the list. And to anyone who thinks otherwise, your argument is completely invalid!

Greatest ever American songwriter. His poetic lyrics portray a dark side that exits, and that most writers, seeking commercial success, would never write

These popularity lists are annoying they don't adhear to what makes a genuine singer/songerwriter. Guys Like Townes and Rambling Jack, Willie Nelson, Guy Clark, Robert Johnson, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash these guys should be in your top ten. These are song writers. You can argue that Robert Johnson did more with 16 songs than anyone on your top ten. Look I love Queen and the who etc... but they aren't in the ball park of the guts mentioned above. These guys traveled every day meeting peoole visting placesand writing songs about the human experience. Some songs become anthems which is great but the mix of poetry that greats vivid imagery is what defines this group. Once again Blues and Country the music that defines America and is the basis for everything that came after is left out. These people forged the idea of singer songerwriter the person with their instrument and voice spining tales and telling stories that open your mind.
