Top Ten Biggest Boxing Upsets in 2021

2021 had a good amount of upsets, not just in boxing but in all combat sports. Here’s a list of the biggest boxing upsets of 2021. What fight do you believe to be the biggest upset? Please vote or add!
The Top Ten
1 Sandor Martin W(MD) Mikey Garcia

I don't know what was wrong with Garcia in this fight. He looked terrible. I wonder if he's "shot" and it's pretty much over for him as a champion or even as a contender. He is at that age (mid-30s). This fight also tied for the biggest boxing betting upsets of the year at +1400.

2 George Kambosos Jr. W(SD) Teofimo Lopez

Lopez overlooked and underestimated the tough, scrappy Aussie. Lopez was already talking about future matches before he and Kambosos even got into the ring. Due to his overconfidence and lack of focus, Lopez lost his WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and The Ring lightweight titles.

3 Masamichi Yabuki W(TKO10) Kenshiro Teraji

One of Japan's biggest boxing stars, the undefeated (18-0) WBC light-flyweight champion Teraji was knocked out in the 10th round. This tied with the biggest boxing betting upsets at +1400.

4 Oleksandr Usyk W(UD) Anthony Joshua

Many considered this an upset because most people thought Joshua was too big, too powerful, and too experienced at heavyweight for Usyk to have a chance. The reason being, this was only his third fight at heavyweight after moving up from cruiserweight. Usyk gained the WBA (Super), IBF, IBO, and WBO heavyweight titles.

5 Kiko Martinez W(KO6) Kid Galahad

The young, much-hyped, up-and-coming Galahad was supposed to run through the aging (35) fighter with 10 losses on his record. Galahad also talked a lot of smack before this fight and ended up getting knocked out cold in the 6th round, losing the IBF featherweight title in the process.

6 Yordenis Ugas W(UD) Manny Pacquiao

Manny was old and past his prime in this fight. Actually, he has been past his prime for a while now. I'm glad he retired after this fight. He has secured himself as a legend of the sport. But because of his "name" and legacy, this was considered an upset by many.

7 Mauricio Lara W(TKO9) Josh Warrington

Undefeated Warrington (and most fans) thought this was going to be a tune-up fight for a big-name, big-pay fight next. Well, Lara came out ferocious from the opening bell, dropping Warrington in the 4th round and finishing him in the 9th. Never overlook another fighter, but especially never overlook a Mexican fighter.

8 Gabriel Rosado W(KO3) Bektemir Melikuziev

This was supposed to be a "showcase" fight for the young up-and-comer Melikuziev against an aging, high-mileage "gatekeeper" in Rosado. Well, the tough, experienced, crafty veteran had other plans, knocking Melikuziev out in the 3rd round and winning some minor titles in the process.

9 James Martin W(MD) Vito Mielnicki

Not higher on the list at the start because casual fans have no idea who these guys are, but this was tied as one of the biggest betting upsets of the year at +1400.

10 Masataka Taniguchi W(TKO11) Wilfredo Mendez

This was said to be an easy mandatory title defense for Mendez, but Taniguchi ended up knocking out Mendez in the 11th round, taking his WBO mini flyweight title.

The Contenders
11 Óscar Valdez W(KO10) Miguel Berchelt
