1 Trout Mask Replica - Captain Beefheart

To be honest, this is a classic album that seems to be universally praised, but I just can't get myself to like it. And I figured out what it is: all of the albums on this list lack something essential - may it be melody, conventional singing, structure, instruments, harmony, or even an entire instrumental track - but there is only one thing "Trout Mask Replica" is lacking that makes it so unlistenable: rhythm. It is simply too much for my mind. Even though it took me several listens, I enjoy both "Nunsexmonkrock" by Nina Hagen and "Plastic Ono Band" by Yoko Ono. Both of this album have vocals that are more acrobatic screaming than singing, but this is acting. The backing tracks are extremely chaotic and unconventional but they still have a certain beat and rhythm that make the overall listening experience challenging yet not impossible. But "Trout Mask Replica" has all the instruments, lyrics and vocals, but it's played so anarchically that there is nothing to hold onto. I can't sit ...more - Martin_Canine
