Top 10 Extreme Metal Songs of the 1990s

90s were hard for all metal bands because major labels/producers preferred to invest in grunge. Similarly to metal, grunge was dark and rebellious but grunge was more accessible with more chances to go mainstream. And profit-oriented labels/producers lost interest in metal (re-directed their money).

However, this decade was great for extreme metal - probably because extreme metal wasn't related to major labels very much (extreme metal is always pretty underground). Most of the songs/albums on this list were produced/released with the significant participation of the band members.

For my original Top 10 picks I used one song per band. I also tried to include more subgenres.
The Top Ten
1 Crystal Mountain - Death
2 Black Rose Immortal - Opeth
3 Freezing Moon - Mayhem

Masterpiece

4 Phobophile - Cryptopsy
5 I Am the Black Wizards - Emperor
6 Heartwork - Carcass

One of my favorite metal albums of the 90s. This song is one of the reasons why.

7 Chopped In Half - Obituary
8 Downfall - Children of Bodom
9 Obscura - Gorguts
10 Hammer Smashed Face - Cannibal Corpse

The fact that Opeth is higher than this needs to be fixed

The Contenders
11 Pierced from Within - Suffocation

13 Transilvanian Hunger - Darkthrone
14 Key to the Gate - Burzum
