I love making lists about underground yet successful bands because they demonstrate certain things that are keys to success in metal.
1) Steffen Kummerer (rhythm guitar, vox) - Master degree in Media Technology Engineering
2) Linus Klausenitzer (bass) - 2 degrees: Hamburg Music and Art University; Regensburg Music College
3) Rafael Trujillo (lead guitar) - 2 degrees: Munich Guitar Institute; Amsterdam Conservatorium (2 degrees and he's only 24! ; he was born in 1994)
4) Sebastian Lanser (drums) - Anton Bruckner University (Austria), where he studied percussion (with a minor in piano) and graduated with honors

Interestingly, a band that plays extremely tight, offers freedom to the band members.
I have nothing but admiration for this guy - Steffen Kummerer (born 1985). He's immensely talented musically, very intelligent, very nice, very charming...And obviously a great leader of his band - a guy who doesn't make his band mates feel restricted. He is like the opposite of the authoritarian and overcontrolling Dave Mustaine. Overall, Steffen is a guy you would wanna be around.
Christian Münzner, who was in the band for 6 years but left for severe health issues, loved being in Obscura - he said he liked the artistic freedom he had in this band, particularly thanks to the band leader Steffen Kummerer who welcomed his contributions. Christian Münzner added that he didn't feel happy in Necrophagist and it was the reason he left and joined Obscura.
Also, band leader Steffen Kummerer said that one thing never happened in this band: band members were never told "can you play a ...more
His main duties in Obscura include: all vox, all lyrics, rhythm guitar, co-writing songs (plus leadership and decision making)
No, he had no drug problems. Münzner's heath issues peaked in 2011-2012 when he was unable to play at all. Two or three solos on the album Omnivium (2011) were played by guest guitarists. Christian left the band later, in 2014, for his heath problems, but he wasn't kicked out.
In 2011, Münzner was diagnosed with focal dystonia in his left (fretting) hand. He had this disorder for several years but physicians couldn't characterize the disease. Münzner describes the disorder as "impairing the coordination between both his index and middle fingers, making the technical demands of his music impossible, forcing him to change his fingering and technique."
This disease is a severe thing for a virtuoso guitarist, especially in the left (fretting) hand. Münzner explained:
"My decision to step down from my position as the lead guitar player in Obscura after more than 6 years was not an easy one, but even though it may come unexpected for the majority of fans...I am ...more
And we've heard of way dumber reasons why people have been kicked out of their bands.
Touring (playing difficult material every night) is a problem for Christian Münzner (the main reason he quit Obscura) but writing and recording music is still possible. Past and present Obscura members played on his solo albums.
In the band Alkaloid he's again with some of his former Obscura band mates: Linus Klausenitzer (bass) and Hannes Grossmann (drums).
