Best Video Games of 2009

The Top Ten
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Game of the year? More like game of the decade! A stunning game. The visuals are still the best around. The gameplay was tight, fast, and explosive. The story was engrossing and involving, and the cut scenes had some of the best acting ever seen in a video game.

Along with the best single-player experience of the year was the amazing multiplayer. It brought something new to online gaming and is still going strong. This game has now shot Nathan Drake to the top of gamers' hearts, an essential buy.

The fact that that PoS Modern Warfare 2 made the list over this is shocking. In Uncharted 2, you get great multiplayer, fantastic graphics, an awesome story, and a great experience. MW2 gives you a four-hour campaign, one-man army danger-close noobs, and the same rehashed BS from before.

Batman: Arkham Asylum

The best superhero game ever. No doubt. Bringing the dark, deep, and mysterious world of the Dark Knight to our consoles was magical. No other superhero game has been as gorgeous, complicated, deep, and gobsmacking as AA.

With a top-notch story, genuine classic voice acting, and an incredible control system, Batman has set the bar high for following superhero games. Only Bioshock matched the atmosphere created by the wonderful Rockstar team, making it an automatic classic.

I'm still waiting to play this one, but I've played Arkham City, and if this game is half as good as Arkham City, it needs to be number 1.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was huge. Massive. Enormous. Shops were overrun. It was on the news (for positive and negative reasons), and it was supported by a huge advertising campaign. Now the biggest-selling game of all time and getting the award for the biggest entertainment launch ever, Call of Duty was a success!

Explosive action, huge set pieces, and an amazing multiplayer make it one of the best shooters ever. The multiplayer is still going strong, which is proof that it must be good!

Assassin's Creed II

The first Assassin's Creed was awful. There, I said it. Yes, it may have looked great, but damn were those missions boring. However, Ubisoft listened, and they changed what was one of the biggest letdowns in video game history into one of the most refined sequels of all time.

With a huge range of customizable outfits and weapons, AC II was more RPG-esque than an action game. It contained one of the best characters in video game history, and the story left you gagging for more. And who can deny it? Who didn't go whoa the first time they climbed the church spire in Florence?

Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City
Minecraft

I don't really play it anymore, but you have to recognize its influence on all sandbox games. It has more YouTube content than any single game ever and is the second best-selling game of all time, behind only Tetris.

Any list of video games that does not have this on there does not deserve to be on the internet. It should be number 1 on every list.

This game is my most favorite single-player game of all time. (Also my second favorite game of all time, just after Roblox.)

Left 4 Dead 2
New Super Mario Bros
Street Fighter IV
Bayonetta

Crazy, weird, sexual, insane, confusing, and downright stupid are some of the words that will no doubt pop into your head after someone mentions Bayonetta. Never has a game scared me and left me sitting on my sofa with a lifeless face like Bayonetta. I mean, her hair attacks enemies!

Platinum Games produced a screamer of a game with this, and a good start it was. There are just not enough words to describe it!

The Newcomers

? Tekken 6
? Punch-Out!! Wii
The Contenders
Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack In Time

This game is incredible. How is it that this isn't even on the main list? It should definitely be in the top 3, if not number 1.

Way better than Uncharted 2. People only like games like Uncharted because they look good, but they have rubbish stories and average gameplay. R&C has the best stories, gameplay, voice acting, characters, and writing I have ever seen in video games. Easily the best game of the year.

The Saboteur

At first, this game plays out like a film noir due to the black-and-white coloring. Initially, it seemed odd. It was only once I started liberating parts of Occupied France that the colors came alive.

As Irish saboteur Sean Devlin, you can blow up the Nazi regime from Normandy to Saarbrücken and everything in between.

Nathan Drake is just a poor man's Sean Devlin. The Saboteur is basically Sin City meets Inglourious Basterds.

One of those games that was under the radar when it first came out at Christmas 2009, but it's brilliant.

The Sims 3

MASSIVE improvement from the first two versions. You can finally explore the towns, and not with rubbish graphics either!

You can also go to some of the jobs that the Sims work at, making the game much more interesting as you're not sitting there waiting for them to come home. There is more development with young adults and adults, making their lives longer. A LOT more options are included, and it also allows you to continue your Sims experience online with a great community by creating videos and stories using the in-game video and camera options, making it creative as well.

But my all-time favorite addition has to be the playable ghosts and the new ways to kill the Sims. The cool ghost effects, like the flames if your ghost died by fire, are pretty awesome.

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games
Wolfenstein
Wii Sports Resort

I remember when I used to play this with my friends in the summer of 2009. We would laugh without a care in the world.

Borderlands

Is it an RPG? MMORPG? I don't know! But I do know one thing: it's a damn good game! The artistic visual style, awesome weapons, and hilarious array of characters were a breath of fresh air in a stale market.

It was also a huge success with the public. Critics lapped up this impressive game that will no doubt be remembered for a long time. If it wasn't for the average controls and a few little bugs, this could be number 2!

Metroid Prime Trilogy

How did Grand Theft Auto beat this? I can understand Resident Evil 5, but come on! Metroid is a bit underrated. I've heard people say Super Metroid is the only good one, but if they would just sit down and play this game, they would love it.

Infamous

One of my fondest memories of 2009 has to be Infamous. Creating a new superpowered, everyday fellow with electrical powers was a stroke of genius by Sucker Punch. There's nothing like thunder dropping from the tallest building in the city onto an unsuspecting civilian! One of the most enjoyable and engrossing experiences of 2009.

A classic PlayStation exclusive. Best superhero game that isn't Marvel or DC. Fun gameplay, not a bad story, and likable characters. What a blast it was to play this.

WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2010
The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story

In my opinion, the 2019 remake on 3DS takes this great game and improves on it.

Resident Evil 5

I love this game very much - one of my favorites. Also, I adore Chris Redfield. It was great to see him again.

Halo 3: ODST
F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin

Great game! Many games today still copy this.
