41 ABBA ABBA ABBA were a Swedish pop group formed in Stockholm in 1972 by members Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad.

Record sales, beautiful voices, musical, what more is there to say. This was an incredibly popular band in the seventies and remains popular today, having the second spot in the UK's best selling albums list. They had eight wonderful albums and several hits, unfortunately only one in the US. ABBA is my favorite seventies band, because of the music. It's sad, but most people are unable to look past the band's cheesy appearance and lyrics, and see the brilliance in the music.

They revolutionized pop, put Sweden on the map, and had fans all over the world before anyone even thought of the internet. Two ladies with voices that no one could ever copy, and two gentlemen who put some of the most beautiful melodies into mainstream pop. Say what you will, but I absolutely love them.

So many of theirs that still catch my attention and make me wanna dance, after all these years. That's what makes it one of the best groups for me.

The best pop group from the 70s. Just love them! - ivylee

42 Cheap Trick Cheap Trick Cheap Trick is an American rock band from Rockford, Illinois, formed in 1973. As of 2010, the band currently consists of Robin Zander, Rick Nielsen, Tom Petersson and Daxx Nielsen.

If people think Cheap Trick is only about The Flame they are sadly mistaken. One of the greatest bands ever with dozens of classic / flat out amazing songs. Also not just a " bar band " - an all time great band.

The greatest bar band to ever come out of America.

One of the most underrated, but greatest bands. - FearlessFreep

Only remember one song of theirs, The Flame. I LOVE that song!

43 Alice Cooper Alice Cooper Alice Cooper was an American rock band formed in Phoenix, Arizona in 1964. The band consisted of lead singer Vince Furnier, Glen Buxton, Michael Bruce, Dennis Dunaway, and Neal Smith.

Alice is still great and still puts out great albums. Alice had a ton of hits in the 70's as a solo artist and with the original band as well and there is nothing like an Alice stage show.

44 Neil Young Neil Young Neil Percival Young, OC OM is a Canadian singer-songwriter and musician, producer, director and screenwriter.

Not a Neil fan I see, had to scroll all they way down here to find him.

He spoke the truth and nothing but the truth so help me God!

I was quite dissapointed to see him this far down the list. His guitar playing abilities alone should place him much higher on this list.

46 Electric Light Orchestra Electric Light Orchestra The Electric Light Orchestra are an English rock band from Birmingham. They were formed in 1970 by songwriters/multi-instrumentalists Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne with drummer Bev Bevan.

One of the greatest and most unique bands of all time. Misunderstood and misinterpreted, ELO and Jeff Lynne did things with music that no other band has done since. Each album is different and every song is highly diverse with a unique mix of beautiful melodies, stunning orchestral counter-melodies, rock rhythms, electronic/synth effects, spacey effects, etc. Often perceived as 'cheesy' by a lot of rock snobs but is truly TRIPPY on many levels and may take multiple listen-throughs on some albums to hear whats REALLY going on. Incredible.

Absolutely a hit making group that was different than the rest. Had many top 40 hits. More than several groups that are currently in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. They deserve their place in history.

I mean the Beatles said if they kept making music into the 70s they would want to sound like ELO!

Certainly one of my favourite bands of the 80's it's good that their still around.

48 New Seekers

What about "THE (real) SEEKERS", the group that this mob tried unsuccessfully to emulate?

Eve, Graham, peter doyle and lyn paul really made this band a class act.

49 Sweet

Great group here! I'm surprised enough to even see it on this list. They have a lot of good songs but only a few of them are really original. - AlexandeHoyte

Wow.. this group is amazing! Versatile.. Full of energy.. And their 70's looking was extremely original..

Brian Connolly's voice is amazing! At least in the earlier days for them. They weren't superb however they're singing abilities may possibly have been the best! Better than Queen who've ripped them off completely.

The sweet started glam rock their the most underrated 70's band

54 Grand Funk Railroad Grand Funk Railroad

They are without a doubt the most known unkwons of the underground, but definetly one of my top ten..

One of the top Rock groups ever. Sold out many outdoor arenas. Many Top 40 hits. Deserve their recognition in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Fame came from their music, not hairdos and accents like the mediocre Beatles.

The Greatest American Garage Band of all time, and without a doubt, the most powerful live group of the 70's... If it was based on shere numbers, GFR would have been in 20 years ago... One of the biggest injustices in rock & roll.

59 Boston Boston Boston is an American rock band from Boston, Massachusetts, that achieved their most notable successes during the 1970s and 1980s.

so great with the tom scholz brad delp combo.
the most underrated band ever!
BEST BAND EVAR! - wolf10

If any music can be both driven rock and beautiful at the same time - it was Boston. Great melodies with a good beat. Incredible guitar and keyboards forming awesome musical interludes.

Boston's vocal and guitar harmonies remain signature rock accomplishments. Boston took the best of the past and created the future of harmonic and melodic rock and roll.

60 Emerson, Lake & Palmer Emerson, Lake & Palmer Emerson, Lake & Palmer were an English progressive rock supergroup formed in London in 1970. The band consisted of keyboardist Keith Emerson, singer, bassist, and producer Greg Lake, and drummer and percussionist Carl Palmer.

Probably not main stream enough for most -- but should be much higher
