Top 10 Prime Ministers of Australia

The Top Ten
Bob Hawke

He was in office for 3,206 days. He restructured Medicare. He passed over 83 pieces of important legislation. He floated the Australian dollar and opened up the economy.

He was fantastic economically and reintroduced Medicare. The man was amazing and completely deserving of the number one spot.

He modernized Australia, reintroduced Medicare, and was a truly authentic Prime Minister.

John Curtin

Excellent war leader who did a lot to help Australia and knew when to say no to our allies. If only he had lived long enough to enact proper policy without the distraction of a war.

A wartime Prime Minister faced with invasion, who made it clear that our future security was linked to the USA, not the UK.

A great wartime leader, although the stress ultimately killed him.

Gough Whitlam

This guy shaped modern Australia. I'd give Rudd a lot of credit, but Howard is terrible, and you can't argue otherwise. His economic success was due to China's demand for metals, and we lost all the profit within two years without building any infrastructure.

If you argue against that and you're from Western Sydney, just know that if it weren't for Whitlam, you would still be using outhouses.

While born into a well-off household, he advocated for the poor and made our country fairer to the most disadvantaged among us. It seems fitting that the man who gave us the first Australian universal healthcare system should have lived a longer life than any other Prime Minister we've had.

It is a true pity that he left office in such a way.

John Howard

The former Prime Minister John Howard made the Commonwealth of Australia great again. During his term as Prime Minister, the economy in Australia grew and became strong once more. The treasury of the Crown in Australia was able to pay off government debt completely. Australians' income improved, and the unemployment rate dropped to 4.1%.

No doubt, the honorable former Prime Minister is one of the best who served this great nation.

Gillard and Rudd? Those two are jokers. This man, along with Costello and a few others, is responsible for Australia having a strong financial standing until the Labor Party squandered it. Gillard and Rudd are the two biggest fools of modern Australian politics. This man is one of the geniuses.

Kevin Rudd

Easily one of, if not the best, PM when it comes to foreign policy skill. His carbon scheme, while probably not enough for net zero or anything like that, would have set us on the right track.

The apology was great, and his handling of the GFC was even better. The emissions trading scheme should've passed, but of course, the Greens couldn't be pragmatic.

Australia was unaffected by the Great Recession when he was in office.

Ben Chifley

It's interesting how the majority of our best Prime Ministers are from Labor, yet the Liberal Party has been in office longer.

He rebuilt Australia and brought us into the post-war world. It's a shame he couldn't nationalize the banks.

Paul Keating

Visionary. Transformative. Courageous. Easily the greatest of all time. I read a quote once: "Australia was ready for Keating, Australians were not." They are now.

His vision was and remains spot on.

A good successor to Hawke. It's a shame it ended the way it did, but he led many great Hawke-era reforms and did well with some of his own.

Visionary and contemporary. On Indigenous affairs and our place in the Asia-Pacific, he was, and is, without peer.

Alfred Deakin
Robert Menzies

I'm surprised this guy isn't ranked higher. He was the longest-serving Prime Minister and completely changed Australia.

During his long time in office, I would expect him to have overseen significant changes, including the construction of schools while he was still Prime Minister.

Anthony Albanese

He is trying to get the Aboriginal Voice to Parliament. He is doing very well in his first few years and is trying to give Aboriginal people more representation.

A great incumbent who history will remember fondly.

The Newcomers

? John McEwen
? Arthur Fadden
The Contenders
Malcolm Fraser
Julia Gillard

An underrated PM. The carbon tax and mining profits tax were solid laws that the mining lobby opposed because they finally had to pay their share towards Australians for extracting resources from the country. Aw, poor things.

The amount of work accomplished by a minority government is impressive.

She was removed from office too quickly because she made it difficult for businesses to be greedy, carbon-happy, and irresponsible.

Andrew Fisher

He established the minimum wage and the Commonwealth Bank - bloody impressive.

Malcolm Turnbull
Tony Abbott Anthony John "Tony" Abbott is an Australian politician who was the 28th Prime Minister of Australia, from 18 September 2013 to 15 September 2015. Abbott was leader of the Liberal Party from 2009 to 2015, and has been a member of parliament for Warringah since 1994.

Even though he's basically a meme to many people, he is my favorite Prime Minister and did very well for Australia.

Joseph Lyons
Edmund Barton
William McMahon
John Gorton
Billy Hughes
James Scullin

He did well in office despite the immense challenge of the Great Depression. If he had had more time, he might have gotten us out of it.

Prime Minister at the worst time - during the Depression with 29% unemployment. He didn't even own a house until he was 63.

Frank Forde
Chris Watson
Harold Holt
Scott Morrison

He did a great job. The media attacked him unfairly. He was smart to stand up to China's bullying. The pandemic was tough for everyone.
