Top 10 Most Powerful Witches and Wizards From Harry Potter
The Top Ten
Not only is he a great wizard, but we must look at one important fact! Some time after Dumbledore's sister died, he stopped looking for power! He knew that power was his weakness! If he continued to gain more power, along with the elder wand, he would have been with out a doubt the most powerful wizard in History. He never used magic to hurt people his sisters death, he instead became a teacher and was able to become the wizard he is and always will be. Voldemort at full power could only bring Dumbledore to a stale mate. Dumbledore never tried to defeat him, because he Knew that it was HARRY who must defeat him. Other wise, our beloved headmaster was kind, loving, yes flawed, great, powerful, wise, and always Supreme to all other wizards of his time.
Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald, who had the Elder Wand. Nobody can defeat the owner of the Elder Wand. Dumbledore did.
How is Harry stronger than the founders of Hogwarts and Hermione?
He has the elder wand and he stands up to voldemort until Voldemort retreats. He protects Harry in all the ways that he can until his death.
Most importantely, he is the only person that Voldemort is afraid of.
Voldemort is the most powerful wizard, possibly ever. Dumbledore is the more versatile, well-rounded, and intelligent wizard. He knows magic that Voldemort can not fathom due to relative (relative to Dumbledore) inexperience and character flaws. Knowledge, experience, versatility, and intelligence are great advantages to have but they are not the same thing as power. Voldemort's advantage in raw power is the only reason Dumbledore, with his many advantages including the elder wand, could not outright defeat Voldemort in the duel in the ministry atrium.
I love Dumbledore and hate Voldemort, but I wont lie, Voldemort is the most powerful wizard. He sure as hell knows what he's doing. He doesn't just throw out some random spells. He thinks quick and his moves are never wrong. I am aware that Dumbledore defeated the dark wizard Grindewald, but even he admits that voldemort is stronger. He has great strategic skill. When he was a kid, he was evil but was still one of the best boys at hogwarts and even fooled Slughorn. He fooled everyone. He can keep in the shadows and has great persuasion skills. The horcrux idea, although very disturbing and terrible, was genius on his part. He fooled harry in chamber of secrets and nearly killed him by taking control of the basilisk. In conclusion, he is smart, powerful and knows what he's doing
Duh! one of the most powerful/dangoures wizards in the wizerding world!
I think Lord voldemort is the most powerful wizard from harry potter because Albus stated and claimed that even his most powerful spell, charm, incantation etc will not effect voldemort when he turn to full power
I admit he is not as great as Dumbledore, but he is better than Voldemort. Voldemort's first defeat was caused by Lily Potter and love, and his was caused by the greatest wizard ever. Voldemort's second defeat was caused by himself and a seventeen-year-old boy who hadn't finished school, whereas Grindelwald's was caused by remorse, friendship, and Voldemort.
Plus, he is a Seer.
Probably not more powerful than Dumbledore, though what really happened in their duel in 1945 is still unclear. Definitely more powerful than Voldemort. His reign was for about 20+ years, whereas Voldemort was only at the height of his power about 10, 14 years. He knew more magic than Tom, had a better understanding of magic, and even lived longer than Voldemort. He mastered the Elder Wand, didn't harm his soul once, never underestimated the power of love, and, last but not least, was defeated by the greatest wizard of the age, not a seventeen year old who hadn't even finished school.
If you take away Voldemort's Horcruxes, then one could argue that Grindelwald is almost if not just as powerful as Voldemort. Yes, he had the Elder Wand; but he was able to contend with Dumbledore in the most legendary duel of all time by two wizards. In their first skirmish, he was able to duel Aberforth and Albus simultaneously! When he was interrogated by Voldemort, Voldemort couldn't tap into his mind while he had no wand and was in prison at his weakest. This made him a very powerful occlumens since Voldemort was unmatched in interrogating people. The only other wizards that could shield their true thoughts from Voldemort were Dumbledore, Snape, and oh wait that it! Grindelwald was also able to manipulate Dumbledore because of their attachment and reason that by becoming the masters of death, that it would be, "for the Greater Good." Thanks for reading!
He supposedly pushed dumbledore quiet far when they dueled so I think he should probably be 3rd
It's said that no one can lie to Lord Voldemort. This man could. He is also known as one of few people able to brew the Wolfsbane Potion. I believe we never really could see him fighting for real in the books, therefore we can't be sure what his spellcasting skills are, but he did create few original spells as a teenager, as well as correct the textbook recipes, which makes him a prodigy.
I want to tell you that he might not be as powerful as Dumbledore, as great as Voldemort, as brilliant as Grindelwald, but honestly!
I'll let the other comments tell you why... XD I don't need to repeat what they have said, because I agree 100%. We will always remember you, Snape and Alan! Always.
Snape should have been FIRST! He is an awesome potions master, and he knows so much about the dark arts!
Minerva is the most powerful after Dumbledore and Voldemort. Madam Pomfrey said even 4 aurors wouldn't stand a chance against Minerva. I've read J.K. rowling herself said that she would have defeated Snape (altough it would have been close). She was second in command after Dumbledore and no one was ever stupid enough to attack her. She survived every battle without any injury. She has loads of experience and she knows very very much about all kinds of magic and spells, including dark magic. After Minerva, I'd put Snape in a very strong 4th place and Bellatrix 5th. Bellatrix was super powerful, she won all of her battles except when she underestimated Molly and didn't fight with her own wand. Moody is very powerful too.. It's up for debate if he or Bella should be in 5th place. I think because Moody got defeated a few times during the Second Wizarding War, I'd put Bella ahead of Moody.
In the Deathly Hallows, she has a scar on her face during the final battle
She is just awesome! She participated many battles at Hogwarts. And if she wasn't stunned and injured by stunners at the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, she would have also been at the department of the mistery.
JK Rowling herself stated McGonagall would have beaten Snape if the duel continued, and I'm sure (though they never would) McGonagall would easily beat Harry in a duel. Harry only beat Voldemort through the help of many others (and I am happy he did), though in terms of power and based on fact, McGonagall should come in 3rd.
It took 4 aurors to take down Minerva, which wasnt even a fair fight. She also had a duel with Voldemort that I think wasnt stated in the books nor the movies. The duel between her and Voldemort ended in a draw. Which shows that she has a incredible defense against the dark arts and other sorts of magic
While I do think that Harry Potter is a exceptionally talented child, he in my opinion is not on the list of powerful witches and wizards. He came on top in the fights with the Dark Lord, because he had a lot of luck, like enormous amount. That and if you combine the fact that he has a lot of help from almost every side it's really no wonder. He is very brave boy, who would later became a great man.
In the first book, he came on top because of his mother, because she sacrificed herself for him, giving him the ultimate protection.
The second book, while it shows incredible character to do what he did, it was not anything magical that we can judge his power on that. He killed the basilisk with the sword, and Riddle with the basilisk tooth.
The third year he actually shows a lot of power, and I did say he was exceptionally gifted. But you have to remember that he taught his classmates two years later and they managed to do it too. Something apparently only a handful ...more
Put it this way: if every wizard in the history of magic were to duel against each other in equal conditions, one on one with no additional help, I can think of only two wizards who would outright beat Harry - Dumbledore and Voldemort. You could make a case for Grindelwald, Snape and Minerva, but even that I say with hesitation.
However, it is important to remember that magic is an art that requires sheer talent, work, experience and practice. At 17 years of age it is unrealistic to expect Harry to have the skill of wizards/ witches many, many years his senior where they have honed their craft. What Harry has is insane talent and potential who was destined for power and greatness, right from the beginning. Yes, he is raw and makes mistakes, but he learns as the series progresses, and by defeating the Dark Lord he demonstrates a skill and talent that very few could ever manage - something Minerva and Snape, for example, were incapable of doing. Harry 30/ 40 years down the line ...more
he basically beat voldemort in some way 6 times he also made a patronus at age 13 I'm pretty surprised he's also a pretty good broom rider
Harry Potter is very powerful for his age, he was more powerful than he gave himself credit for. He is the son of James and Lily Potter, both very powerful in their own right, so their genes passed on to Harry. He performed a patronus charm in this third year, which not many if any other witch or wizard has done before. He can fly a broom better than anyone at Hogwarts. He taught the others to defend themselves against the Dark Arts. He is one powerful wizard.
Bellatrix should be 3rd or at least 4th on this list, come on she was a sadistic bitch! Dumbledore said he wouldn't like to fall prey to her!
and should be noted that she was using a wand which she most likely hadn't won the allegiance of when dueling molly weasley
I like Bellatrix and Hermione so nice job Bellatrix even though your mock baby voice is annoying I think you are really cool and our nick names are the same both Bella!
She is powerful enough to do the 3 unforgivable spells and was only killed by Molly Weasley because she wasn't expecting Molly to be such a good witch
Um I think she should be right after snape cause she's really powerful and a cool person
"Hello Tom," Merlin greeted. "A nice day, Riddle?"
"Yes, to complete it I need to murder you, and I will!" spat Voldemort.
Merlin flicked his wand, and Voldemort died.
Merlin should honestly be right before Dumbledore (as Dumbledore was hinted at many many times to be the most powerful wizard ever and even stated o be the most powerful wizzard of his era.)
Though he does not come out in the book, he was mentioned before as the greatest wizard o all time by Harry, and Dumbledore. Merlin would just give a flick of his wand, and Voldemort would turn to ashes.
He was basically the inventor of all things magical and possibly the very first wizard!
ok people hate him but lets be honest he was probably a very strong wizard
He should be higher up, he excelled in transfiguration which is the hardest subject, he constantly hexed snape even though snape sent thaose hard curses. Please tell me how is hermione, how is harry, before james potter, who defied voldemort THREE TIMES! LIKE ACTUAL FIGHTING, NOT STABBING TH DIARY, NOT HAVING MUMMY TO CAST THE LOVE SPELL, NOT THE SAME WAND TYPE, NOT THE PHILOSOPHERS STONE, NOT DUMBLDORE TO BE THERE ALL THE TIME, NO
As Harry's father I think he is best. Being one of the top in Defense Against the Dark Arts class, he even defeated Snape when he was a fifth year. He may have been killed by Voldemort, but he basically tried to lose. This is what I think:
People think James is a bullying jerk, but James is like Tucker Jenkins from Grange Hill.
The biggest thing in Moody's favor is his reputation. Think about it, this is the guy who has an Eye that can see through invisibility cloaks. He's taken down so many Death Eaters and Dark Wizards that he is constantly being reported as being attacked. And what's his motto? "Constant Vigilance! " So while he may not be more powerful than Dumbledore or Voldemort, this guy needs to be at least third on the list.
I think Alastor moody was the most powerful wizard he knows all the evil spells and he has a epic staff!
Good Spells and Evil Spells and not afraid to use the 3 curses and I am not talking about the fake Moody. He also has a wand, a staff, and an all seeing eye. Pretty much unbeatable don't you think
Alastor Moody is the best aura ever, that's why Voldemort expected Harry to be with him. He survived two of the wars against Voldemort and the only reason he died is because Mundungus Fletcher is a coward.
He is awesome! XOXO
Hermione Granger is much more talented and powerful than Ginny Weasley. She is the most clever witch her age according to one of her teachers' who shared a class with the exceptionally talented Lily Weasley. She is a very powerful witch considering she got ten outstandings and one exceed expectations in her O.W.L.S and Harry Potter who defeated Voldermort Barely got any exceed expectations or outstanding and even failed a few of his classes! She has good stealth too with her exceptional skill at non-verbal spells and her charms which left the trio undetected for almost a year when far more experienced witches and wizards got captured within months! She has outstanding skill and knowledge and is one of the most powerful witches her age!
Who is Lily Weasley? You mean Ginny Weasley, Lily Evans or Lily Potter ( Harry's daughter )?
So smart. Harry and Ron Probably wouldn't Survive without her.
Without Hermione, almost all of the characters would have died before the 6th book. With her endless numbers spells, millions of remedies and antidotes, and understanding of magical consequences, she is for sure not only the wisest of her time, but most powerful too.
I love Hermione! But, tbh, I only did at a few books, when she wasn't being despicably annoying! She sucked then.
He should be first
Sirius is the best and the most powerful character in the whole series
I get that Harry is the main character, but the only reason he was able to do anything was because he had help from someone else or he was just plain lucky.
Sorcerers Stone: he wouldn't have even got to quirrell without Ron and hermione
Chamber of secrets: HE NEEDED A BIRD! HIS WHOLE LIFE DEPENDED ON A BIRD! What's more to say?
Prisoner of Azkaban was mostly about sirius --- Harry didn't even do anything heroic
Goblet of fire: moody/barty crouch jr was the one who helped him through all the tasks. He practically told him how to get past the dragon. He told dobby about the gillyweed who then told Harry. And he literally blasted everything out of Harry's was in the maze. It was just pure luck that his wand connected with voldemort's. It had nothing to do with his skill
Order of the Phoenix: don't even get me started on this one... he loses his temper so quickly and I blame him ...more
How can people not see Sirius should be in the top 10 list. Oi Remus should too. I am shaking my head
Although his death was tragic, he was one of the better wizards. Firstly, he was protecting Harry Potter and stuck by his friends. He was incredibly powerful, and did his best to help his friends. Despite the pressure from his family and Azkaban, he stuck by what he believed in that's what it takes to be a true wizard. Loyalty, powerful and could be trusted.
Sirius was considered the most powerful and cleverest student all time by Professor mcgonagall. He was also in the order of Phoenix.
While many of the other wizards in this list are pretty powerful, cough Dumbledore cough... Don't forget that Slytherin was one of the most powerful wizards in the history of magic. He created a new magical language or was the original posessor of the magical language parseltongue and he created the original basilisk. It could very well be argued that the most powerful and influential pieces of Dark Magic in the book stem from this single wizard, most probably without the elder wand, although I will admit I'm not entirely sure where the creation of the elder wand took place in history. His magic hid the Chamber of Secrets for thousands of years after his death and his magical line exists as one of the most powerful even by today's standards through Voldemort.
He's a founder he should be above hermione harry moody bellatrix and gellert
Probably in the Top 10 along with the other Founders due to his Reputation alone.
Jeez he literally created most charm and spells
I know I sound like a Slytherin when I say this, but I don't think Godric Gryffindor should be in 12th place. I know that he was one of the creators of Hogwarts, but there were also three other people helping him. Everyone gives Gryffindor too much praise just because Harry Potter was in his house. All the houses of remarkable qualities that make them amazing and unique. I, for one, believe all houses are equal, and that they should stand together rather than bicker amongst each other and try force everyone to believe their house is the best. Like the Sorting Hat said, "The four houses must come together rather than stand and fight alone (I know that wasn't the exact quote)."
He beat a whole goblin army single handedly showing he mist be in contention of one of the best wizards of all time
You know, Godric Gryffindor founded the house Harry Potter was in!
Love gryffindor Vanessa
Aberforth Dumbledore is an exceptionally good character. He helps Harry, Ronald, and Hermione plenty in the deathly Hallows book. He sends Dobby, the coolest house elf ever, into the Malfoy Manor to save Harry and Rom from the dungeons and Hermione from the grasp of hands of Bellatrix Lastrange. Aberforth also helped the three by getting them into Hog's Head and showing them a secret passage to Hogwarts room of requirement. He is a lovely man and a loyal character that has a little part in harry potter
Pretty sure he is just as powerful as Dumbledore, at least that's the vibe that I got from him.
He can see beyond power... he can see the elements of power
Really! Read the book... He goes to 3
He's technically not a witch or wizard but still very powerful.
Dobby showed his power by the love he felt for Harry and his friends; he could save them from a cellar that Voldemort - as we know he would've visited Malfoy Manor and agreed the conditions upon the inmates imprisonment - deemed inescapable from. I think Dobby should definitely be higher as he undermines Voldemort and Bellatrix Lestrange who both place highly on this list. He fully showed his love as he could've gained comfort betraying Harry or not informing him of the plot meaning Ginny would take the full blame but instead Dobby was ultimately better than Dumbledore as when he had power he operated for the greater good and Dobby could've used the power he had over the Lestranges with the chandelier in Malfoy Manor to use bribery etc etc and grant himself comfort but instead he sticks to his goal of saving Harry and his friends. He was loyal til the end.
Dobby is the best he should be number one I was so sad when he died he is the nicest and cutest person in harry potter
He is not a wizard!
He is charms master and did lots of protective spells. Not to mention duelled tons of bad guys!
Awesome! When your sad he cheers you up by making cupcakes DANCE!
He's a Duelling Champion.
He is small and very powerful
Lily Potter is considered to be one of the most powerful witches of her time with exceptional skill and talent according to her previous classmates and teaches, for example Slughorn. Little else is known about her but she is not as powerful as Hermione as mentioned though she is still an exceptionally powerful witch.
Even if people think her wand magic wasnt very good you can't deny her love for harry was the strongest magic in the series. Love is magic as much as divination or defense against the dark arts;lily should be higher than 19
She was the only known person to stop the killing curse, without her Harry would've died and the prophecy wouldn't have been fulfilled.
Greater than she seems. She died for a reason. Should have a higher ranking than this
Not the best but certainly the one that has been most underrated on this list. Kingsley is almost always charged with a high responsibility by all those around him. Both in the Order of the Phoenix and in the Ministry of Magic he is highly thought of and is given important roles.
Deserves to be 3 or 4 in my opinion, not sure whether I'd rate Snape as better.
He is not the bodyguard of the prime minister for no reason. He is bad ass
Kingsley was powerful, not as powerful as dumbledore of course but when he was cornered by a group of snatchers he was described to have fought his way out
This guy kept death eaters out of Hogwarts all night at his window and you know seeing as most the death eaters flew into the castle he must be dam tough.
How is anyone supposed to know how strong one of the founders are compared to the current alive wizards and witches at the time
How can we know which founders were more powerful than the others.
One of the founders of Hogwarts and greatest wizard of her time
She was the only fair founder.
Ron is my favorite character and he is needed in a lot of circumstances. Such as Harry's escape from the 2nd movie or Fred's sacrifice. And he does know how to cheat. Just if he knew more spells, damn it! He could have taken Harry's role!
Ron was the best friend. He may not have been as smart as Hermione or as brave as Harry but he was a great friend. All friendships have rows, and honestly Ron was just scared of the outside world. His loving mother and father kept him shielded from the darkness of the world while on his eleventh birthday Hagrid had to tell Harry his parents were murdered
Also in First Year Ron wrote to Molly and Arthur asking for presents for Harry cause he had said he didn't get any, get my point?
I'm upvoting this solely because everyone in the comments is being a whiny brat. Ron may not be the most powerful, but he sure is competent, and his defining characteristic are not that he is "Harry's sidekick lol" or "GREEDY". Have you not read a single Harry Potter book, or are you just ridiculously obnoxious?
Ron may look very scared but he is cool and he knows way more spells too and is an awesome player at chess
Luna was amazing. She has an ability to dream, even when awake. She was amazing at finding Harry when he was covered with his invisibility cloak. She even survived the Deathly Hallows Part II, for God's sake!
No... According to the book, the one who found him wasn't Luna but Tonk. Tonk was Remus Lupin's wife.
Luna was the most powerful witch when she was at Hogwarts. Even better than Hermione.
Weird is wonderful! She is a big part of the the and in the 7th she leads it with Ginny and Neville.
Awesomeness, thy name is Luna Lovegood
She killed Voldemort's strongest Death Eater! Come on make her in the top 10 people!
She defeated Bellatrix the strongest death eater after Voldemort. If somebody says "But Bellatrix only lost because she was suprised" no in the book the battle was long so bellatrix had time too realise Molly was strong.
She was too overconfident in her abilities and the battle wasn't all that long, Bellatrix makes one insult and dies
She killed lestrange without much effort and so I think she is one of the finest witches in the series
How is she under Bellatrix? Vote her please!
When people look upon bravery, ambition, and hard work, they tend to view wisdom, "as a mean's to an end." Exactly like magic- a mean's to an end. Rowena Ravenclaw managed to hide the fact that her diadem disappeared for years until her death! Ravenclaw also had a deep love for her daughter even though Helena betrayed her! Not to mention that she's a smart knockout- or at least that's how she's described.
Wisdom is the second strongest power that anyone can have (number one is magic). For instance, humans are more powerful than animals because humans are considerably more intelligent.
How are the other founders higher than her!? She was brilliant!
People are not necessarily more intelligent than animals. Pigs are VERY intelligent. Also, people ARE animals. (She should be higher on the list, too)
This guy is powerful. He made a stone that could make people immortal
I would like to add a few items to this list.
SWAT strongest wizard of all time
Two words, five or more syllables
