Top Ten Most Underrated BandsI've decided to create this list after I discover some great great stuff by the very unknown bands - so let's have "your" opinion to this.
Most of the bands listed above are household names!
... Anyway Porcupine Tree are a band who are constantly reinventing themselves. Though they have been coined as a 'prog' band, their music owes just as much to psychedelic rock, metal, ambient and krautrock. They are also surprisingly accessible at times, to the point where I could safely say that anyone with an open musical palette (progressive or otherwise) could appreciate the majority of their albums.
This band is much larger outside its own country (UK) and while they are greatly admired within the progressive rock community they are largely unknown outside of it (at least in the UK). No band has had such a dramatic influence on my musical tastes than this one...
They're in my opinion the 2nd best band of all time (behind Pink Floyd), lyrically, musically, composition-wise, technically, conceptually...
And only a certain type of music fan has heard of them.
If they were around in the 70s, during prog's heyday, they'd be household names
A lot of these bands are NOT UNDERRATED and are very highly regarded by many people. Porcupine Tree on the other hand is reasonably obscure outside of the Progressive Rock genre, yet they have released some of the best albums of modern times. 'In Absentia, ' 'Deadwing, ' and 'Fear of a Blank Planet' feature some of the best stuff I have ever heard.
Most of the bands on this list are MASSIVE (who actually read the title? ) - Porcupine tree have gained huge respect for their consistently great albums, production skills, attitude towards music, live shows etc etc. They will be remembered long after the rubbish in todays charts is forgotten.
honestly a band only famous for a few of many unbeliveable songs really "don't stop me now", "bohemian rhapsody", "we will rock you", "we are the champions", "radio ga ga", "under pressure", and "another one bites the dust" aren't they're only good songs come on "princes of the universe", "breakthru", "innuendo", "headlong", "invisible man", and "i want it all" are just some of the many underrated songs by them.
People forgetting one truth:
Except Beatles, they're the only band who tried very very different styles of music with their combo of great lyrics (especially Freddie) - so why not? I'm sure there're lots of people who like them so much but I'm sure there're so many people who don't know their very best songs (there are way better songs than Bohemian Rhapsody) - the real artists of the music; let's keep their "miracle(music)" alive to keep "us" alive, we won't lose anything :-)
Queen is simply the most underrated band I know. They have experienced with many different kinds of music. Listen to "You're My Best Friend," then "Stone Cold Crazy," then "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon." They are all very different kinds of music. Queen made great music for almost twenty years, and although they lost fans in the 80's, that doesn't mean they don't deserve many more. Among my favorites are "One Year of Love," "Radio Ga Ga," and "Who Wants to Live Forever." Queen is a band who's songs should be rated 39 out of 5 (get it, Queen fans? ), and should not be underrated.
Items on the list that are not underrated:
#8 Pink Floyd
#18 Modern Talking
#40 System of a Down
#43 Guns n Roses
#60 Dire Straits
#73 Dream Theater
#92 The Police
#94 Panic! at the Disco
#97 Alice in Chains
Everybody knows these bands, the ones who don't like them probably don't like them because it's their opinion, not because they haven't heard their songs.
These guys are pretty well-known these days, but couple years ago they were seriously underrated. If you still haven't heard any of their songs, you oughta give this rock band a try. You will enjoy it
Really talented bunch of guys!
Hope more people start listening to them.
These guys deserve so much more credit for the AWESOME stuff they do Myles Kennedy is a god Mark Tremonti is so underrated as a guitarist. Scott Phillips is a great drummer who not many people know about and Brian Marshell is brilliant on the bass.
Alter Bridge are an immortal rock band that was born in the wrong era. These guys are seriously right up there with Guns N' Roses and Metallica. And that is not simply a fan's opinion. That is a FACT.
Oh the mighty force of German power metal. They are over the top with choirs and fantasy themes. Wagner's ghost is a metal head.
Only great songs
The Kinks have countless amazing rock and pop songs, from You Really Got Me and I Need You, to Waterloo Sunset, to Lola and Powerman. They, like the best bands of their time, changed their style through the years, from their fast, simple, catchy tunes, to softer rock, then hitting heavy. You just can't rate them lower than the Doors, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Pink Floyd, and even the Rolling Stones. Once you hear Dave Davies's rough-edged guitar playing, you can't deny them as one of the greatest bands of all time. They're only underrated, because, like The Zombies, another British rock band at the time, the band just had bad connections (they didn't have George Martin).
Most underrated band ever. That's it.
everybody talks about how Pink Floyd and Queen are great.
But they are not The Kinks.
The Kinks are truly the best.
Just listen to any of their songs,
They are addictive, catchy, clever, funny, sometimes they make you laugh and they are still relevant for today.
The Kinks are underrated on every level. The songs tell of a time long past. They never got political or tried to step into psychedelic music as 99% of their contemporaries did. Listen to Village Green amd Arthur amd it will make you rethink the Who and Beatles as the best ever
One thing I discovered 'em about their style are just like the shades of the "Rolling Stones" - very creative band who never got the respect that much
One truth I know about 'em is: People who like 'em likes them so damn much but the people who don't like 'em just absolutely hate 'em: There's no need to hate 'em because they'r d very important part of the music history - but they don't have a big problem about none of other subject so that's why they're the 10th in the list... :-)
Come on! I love Pink Floyd but on what planet are they 'underrated! '. They get exactly the recognition they deserve and perhaps a little more! If Piper at the gates of dawn was released today it would get laughed at! Ummagumma would be applauded for its live section and dismissed simply as noise for its studio effort. Their 70s output is incredible however and is widely viewed as such.
Pink Floyd where the Who of Progressive Rock. Ideas and songwriting made up the difference for not being quite as good musically as say Yes, Gabriel era Genesis, ELP or King Crimson. Pink Floyd never had the snob thing quite as bad as the others. Marijuana made them my favorite band in high school from 75 to 78.
Along with queen the equal best back in the world even though there music is worlds apart. It would be hard to imagine what type of concert it would be if it featured just then two especially if they came out together and done a duet at the end. Impossible now but I am sure it would have made history
How are Queen, Led Zeppelin, and The Beatles on here? They are much better than Nickelback but several people like them. Everyone seems to hate on Nickelback though. Most people just hate on Nickelback because of their bad songs (like Rockstar) which are played on the radio all the time. This band is better than people give them credit for. Being the greatest band ever isn't the point, being a good band very people like is the point.
Nickelback is perhaps the greatest band in music history. The lyrical depth and originality is not found in any other band, not to mention their revolutionary musical innovation. Do you really think that people will even know who queen and nirvana are in 20 years? No. But nickelback will live on. Just listen to 'How You Remind Me' and try telling me that it's not a masterpiece. Go on. I date you.
It's funny. Nickelback is so underrated that the comments here are half filled with "Nickelback is overrated" and "this is a joke, right? ".
I can't believe that a band can show so much talent in their song-writing, lyrical writing (I will admit that SOME of their lyrics are inappropriate and just plain stupid but otherwise they are much better than some believe) and in how they play in concerts (not many bands out there today that play live the same way the song is played on the albums), yet somehow all of that has gone unrecognized by so many people and all by so many stupid reasons.
Why is Nickelback hated so much though? Besides the obvious fact that a meme started the whole "Nickelback sucks" joke, or two of their songs "sound the same", I think it has also to do with how most modern day music listeners judge certain music.
Nickelback is a massive representation of how modern rock listeners don't take the time to hear ...more
Haha Nickelback? Come on. They didn't start a musical revolution and to say that queen or nirvana won't be remembered 20 years from now is downright bs. And Beatles weren't just about music, the Beatles started a cultural movement. And Pink Floyd should move out of the way for Nickelback? Haha that's funny. You are all tools. Have a nice day
ABBA most certainly were underrated. Maybe not so much now. But they were sneered at by the so called 'serious' music critics and their music derided as 'bubblegum pop'. Well it's sure long lasting bubblegum because it's a sound that is loved to this day. Remember, this band was dead as far as the music establishment were concerned by the mid 80's. Nobody even mentioned them to reform for Band Aid or Live Aid. It wasn't till the early 90's that respected figures in Rock and Pop were happy to admit the genius of ABBA.
Abba underrated? Are you kidding me? You should look up the definition of the word 'underrated'. Abba received all sort of recognitions throughout the years. They even made a musical and a movie because of the quality of their work. I am sorry, but Abba are FAR from being underrated. As for not being 'cool', that's not a justification. In the 60s, Rolling Stones fan considered The Beatles' fans "not cool"; would you call The Beatles underrated because of that? Come on.
ABBA doesn't get much credit due mainly to the fact that it's not considered "cool" to like their music (especially if your a dude). But since no one knows who I am I can safely say they are one of the most important recording artists in the history of pop music.
Absolutely. This decade of music gets zero airplay cause it's not cool to play on the air. As we get further from the decade, the bands get their respect and ABBA must be #1.
The mighty Deep Purple helped to creat both hard rock and heavy metal, most people think that it was soley down to Zeppelin and Sabbath, but the Album Deep Purple In Rock WAS being made at the same time as Black Sabbath was, listen to both of them and then tell me which one is heavier. Besides from that they effectively created many sub-genres of heavy metal that are widely used today; power metal, neo-classical metal, progressive metal and symphonic metal and they hugely influenced thrash metal and New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands such as Iron Maiden. Along with this, they made probably the greatest metal live album of all time: Made in Japan, and created many other great albums under Mark II and Mark III, such as In Rock, Machine Head, Fireball and Burn. They were probably the second biggest band in the early 70's after Led Zeppelin and have sold approximately 150 million records to date. They are most famous though for their classic Smoke on the Water, which is probably the ...more
They were never liked by the press and never belonged to any 'scene'. They were too good as musicians to be taken seriously by the likes of rolling stone mag. To this day you gotta be part of some hip press inspired happening to be seen as great. Have you ever heard any body try to cover any of there tunes? Bloody hopeless. no-one gets close. Even the best musicians around today totally fail.
I'm always shocked when I mention Deep Purple and no one has heard of them.. I've only met ONE PERSON who did! Yet they are such an incredible band. I feel very fortunate that I found some of their records in a seller's old collection... they've become one of my favorite rock bands since.
No one notices how incredible deep purple is. I ask everyone what their favorite deep purple song is and they don't even know who they are. I'm lucky to be 14 and realize they amazing sound of Deep Purple
This band is the perfect blend of rock and metal with just a simple touch of classic. Either way this band is an excellent band. Its such a shame being that very few people I met even know their name. But either way this band is the type of band is that simple crown Jewel that is worth the search.
One of my favorites. - Tia-Harribel
Most underrated band on this list, do yourself a favor give a chance to "Slave to the grind" or his first album "Skid Row" :v
Such underrated band pretty good too
I hate hair metal and one of the number one reasons is great talent became music posers in my book. Yes it was a noble effort getting chicks to like metal but metal does not need pretty boy, crotch grabbing hankie on your head nimrods. This is uploaded to be about Satan or horror movie themes. - drkhouse1978
Unjustly labeled as pop metal because of their looks (well, and music) in their early days. Their second and third albums are true classics. I read that Tom Keifer bust his voice in the early 90's. Nevertheless, they didn't get the attention they deserved before that either.
Hiding awesome musical talent behind the pretty faces and great hair.
These guys should be treated better than this!
Many of these bands on the list aren't underrated. This one is though.
I loved the Dio years. - drkhouse1978
Nobody heard about Rainbow in my little country :( post communist capitalism grinded radio mainstream
OK, as good as Smashing Pumpkins are, they’re not underrated. They’re considered to be one of the (if not) the biggest 90s alternative bands.
No surprise this is at #7. It should be number one thou. A band that pass now almost unidentified yet they represent an absolute symbol of the 90's vibes and way of thinking in that generation. The ending of an era (20th century), the coming of age and the certainty that good times wont last forever, only memories last and the most treasured carelessness of youth lives on in our hearts only. Depressive yet hopefull, rough yet so calm an heartwarming. Just the Pumpkins. The most underrated band that I have knowledge of.
"Queen, ABBA, Led Zeppelin and Smashing Pumpkins is underrated."
I should've known when I came to a publicly-voted underrated bands list that this might happen.
Queen and Led Zeppelin have the highest album sales of all time, you idiots.
The Smashing Pumpkins are really underrated. They are a very talented rock band and they deserve more credit.
Just what I thought would happen...I see this list that says "Most Underrated Bands", and I see possible the most famous band ever, Queen, and right below that, the most famous hard rock band ever, Guns and Roses.
What's more, Nirvana, Deep Purple, ABBA, Pink Floyd, Poison and even Motley Crue is on this list.
Are you people frigging retarded? Or do you just act like it? Do you not know the damn meaning of underrated!
Bands like Alter Bridge, Rush, Exodus, Testament, Sepultura, The Mayfield Four, Citizen Swing, Philm, Tremonti and Venom are underrated. Go buy a damn dictionary!
So underrated that even my parents say they've never heard of them!
Maybe not everybody knows about the band, but everyone has heard at least one song by them, but still, they're one of the most underrated rock bands.
Are you kidding me. The really deserving bands are the ones with few votes
The most underrated ever.
My very favorite band. Criminally underrated.
