It's when you can't believe some pairs of albums were made by the same band. This list is about music artists that haven't been consistent, in a dramatic way.
The Top Ten
1 Guns n Roses Guns N' Roses is an American hard rock band from Los Angeles formed in 1985. The classic lineup, as signed to Geffen Records in 1986, consisted of vocalist Axl Rose, lead guitarist Slash, rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin, bassist Duff McKagan, and drummer Steven Adler. Apart from hard rock they are also associated with heavy metal. ...read more.

Yeah I agree, The Spaghetti Incident? was a bland and generic hard rock album, and even worse all the songs are covers that are vastly inferior to the originals, its sad because Guns N' Roses are great at covers except for the ones on this album, This was when the Guns N' Roses members were at the boiling point and after the album Slash left the band which then the band became dormant. I'd take Chinese Democracy over that anyday, at least that had some good songs and Buckethead plays on it.

2 Megadeth Megadeth is an American thrash metal band from Los Angeles, California. Megadeth was formed in 1983 by guitarist Dave Mustaine and bassist David Ellefson, shortly after Mustaine was fired from Metallica. They have released 15 studio albums to date, and have gone through many lineup changes, with Dave Mustaine being the sole constant member.

They released their debut album “Killing Is My Business...And Business Is Good!” in 1985, but became successful after the release of “Peace Sells...But Who’s Buying?” in 1986. ...read more.

Risk is probably the worst album by a Thrash Metal band, the best song on it was a Japanese bonus track that was the Duke Nukem Theme. Pooper Collider had a few good songs but most of them are bland hard rock, and some are among Megadeth's worst (Off the Edge, Burn! )

Risk wasn't even a metal album, it was an electro-pop album.

I actually really like Risk and Super Collider, I’ll Be There and Kingmaker are two of my favorite Megadeth songs.

3 Morbid Angel Morbid Angel is an American death metal band based in Tampa, Florida. UK music magazine Terrorizer ranked Morbid Angel's 1989 debut Altars of Madness first in its list "Top 40 greatest death metal albums".

IDI was very disappointing too, David Vincent came back to the band, but the album sucked and then he left them again (not because of the album though)

4 Queensrÿche Queensrÿche is an American progressive heavy metal band formed in 1982 in Bellevue, Washington, out of the local band the Mob. They released their self titled EP in 1984, but didn’t gain notoriety until the release of their critically acclaimed album Operation: Mindcrime in 1988. As of now, they have one EP, and 15 studio albums.
5 Van Halen Van Halen was an American hard rock band formed in Pasadena, California, in 1972. From 1974 until 1985, the band consisted of guitarist Eddie Van Halen, vocalist David Lee Roth, drummer Alex Van Halen, and bassist Michael Anthony.
6 Helloween Helloween is a German power metal band founded in 1984 in Hamburg, Northern Germany. The band is a pioneering force in the power metal genre, and their second and third studio albums, Keeper of the Seven Keys: Part I and Part II, are considered masterpieces of the genre.
7 Metallica Metallica is an American Heavy/Thrash Metal band formed in 1981. The original lineup was James Hetfield (Vocalist and Rhythm guitarist), Dave Mustaine (Lead Guitar), Lars Ulrich (Drums), Ron McGovney (Bassist). The group came into mainstream from their Self-Titled album and the hit single "Enter Sandman".

With their first two albums, Kill 'Em All and Ride The Lightning reaching underground success, their third effort, Master of Puppets has since become one of the most important heavy metal albums ever, as it became the first thrash metal album to be certified platinum. The title track has since become the band's most played song live. ...read more.

I didn't put Metallica very high because Lulu wasn't a Metallica album - it was a Lou Reed album ft Metallica. The songs were basically written by Lou Reed, including all lyrics.
St. Anger was bad (for Metallica standards) but not painfully bad in general.
Masterpieces: Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets,...And Justice for All
Disasterpiece (with the help of Lou Reed): Lulu

Fun fact: David Bowie said about Lulu "This is Lou’s greatest work. This is his masterpiece. Just wait, it will be like Berlin. It will take everyone a while to catch up."

9 Pantera Pantera was an American heavy metal band formed in 1981 by guitarist Dimebag Darrell and drummer Vinnie Paul. The band started out as a glam metal act in the 1980s with little success.
