Top Ten Least Similar Pairs of Countries

There are about 200 countries, depending on which ones you recognize and which you don't. Among these, there will be countries that are similar to others and ones that are very different.

While a set of countries with similar cultures, resources, climates, and governments will be similar overall, the inverse is also true. A pair of countries with many differences in those factors will turn out to be very dissimilar.
The Top Ten
1 Monaco and Niger

Pretty much all aspects of Monaco and Niger are different. Niger is pretty big, while you can't even see Monaco on many maps. Niger is one of the poorest countries, while Monaco is one of the richest. In terms of urbanization, Niger is the fourth least urbanized country, as opposed to Monaco's 100% urbanization rate.

Obviously, a microstate like Monaco is very unique. However, no other country is nearly as different from Monaco as Niger is.

2 United States and Haiti

These two countries, while not very far from each other, have a lot of differences. Haiti is a small, homogenous country that is often considered a "failed state." The United States, however, is one of the largest countries, and it's a lot wealthier and more functional than Haiti is.

By demographics, the vast majority of Haiti is African, while the United States is only about 60% White, with many other racial groups living in the US as well.

3 North Korea and the United Arab Emirates

Except for their authoritarian governments and similar land areas, nothing else about these two countries is alike. North Korea is an extreme command economy, while the United Arab Emirates is the most capitalist country in the Middle East.

Another major difference is in their natural resources. North Korea has very little, if any, crude oil, while the UAE exports a lot of it. This is part of the reason why the UAE is extremely diverse. Foreign workers come from around the world to work there, while North Korea is pretty much 100% Korean.

4 Democratic Republic of the Congo and Singapore

One can immediately tell by looking at a map that the Democratic Republic of the Congo is big, while Singapore is small. That is very obvious.

Furthermore, the DRC is known as an international basket case, high in poverty and violence, whereas Singapore is one of the richest countries in the world. This is despite the fact that the DRC has plenty of natural resources, unlike Singapore, which has nothing like that.

5 Pakistan and Finland

Pakistan is known for instability, while Finland is extremely stable. Pakistan has a varied climate and terrain, while Finland doesn't.

Those differences are pretty well known and are part of why these two countries are very different in nearly all aspects. However, a lesser-known fact about both that could constitute a similarity or difference is in their demographics. Most Pakistanis are Indo-European, but they aren't considered White by the US Census Bureau. Finns, on the other hand, are Uralic, but they're considered White.

6 Marshall Islands and Chile

The Marshall Islands is one of many archipelago countries consisting of islands with similar climates and cultures. Its antithesis would be a country that fits as many different climate zones in its territory, with as little land area as possible. A country exactly like this is Chile, which is known for being very long. There are dry parts, wet parts, and everything in between.

As a result, the Aymaras and Changos in the north are very different from the Mapuches and Yaganes in the south. Even among European migrant groups, there are Spaniards, French, Germans, Croatians, and Irish, all of whom are united by their Chilean identity rather than their shared genetic similarity.

7 Estonia and Venezuela

Located nowhere near each other, it's no surprise that Estonia and Venezuela have a lot that's different between the two. Estonia is a cold, flat country consisting mostly of grassland, whereas Venezuela is hotter and less flat.

Since 1989, Estonia has improved its economy and standard of living, something that has declined in Venezuela. Venezuela has restricted its economic rights, leading to hyperinflation and shortages - problems that Estonia doesn't have. Venezuela's economy and crime are so bad that despite being a country big on oil, there are more women than men in Venezuela, something not seen in most petrostates.

Another thing people might know about Estonia is that it's one of, if not the least, religious countries in the world. In contrast, Venezuela is considered "backward" and "full of religious extremists," even by Latin American standards.

8 Ethiopia and the Philippines

Ethiopia is known as that one African country that was never colonized (one of two if you don't count Liberia as having been colonized). This has led to Ethiopian culture being distinct from its neighbors, retaining its own language, cuisine, and many other cultural aspects.

On the other hand, the Philippines has been occupied for many years by different other peoples. The Spanish came first, then the Americans, with the Japanese also occupying the country for several years. Unlike Ethiopia, the Philippines's main religion isn't indigenous, its food is influenced heavily by Spanish and American technology, and it has even adopted English to an extent Ethiopia hasn't.

9 Somalia and Poland

It is widely agreed upon that Somalia is a failed state. It has extreme levels of violence, terrorism, poverty, and many other problems. Its antithesis is one of the most peaceful countries in the world, Poland. Poland is a developed country with very little terrorism, a modern, developed economy, and a functional democratic process.

Somaliland is a de facto state that acts as its own country, independent from Somalia, something Poland doesn't have. Warsaw has definitely seen war, but unlike Mogadishu, it doesn't see war currently, and it won't for a while, if ever.

10 Japan and Australia

As far as developed countries go, Japan and Australia may be the least similar. For starters, Japan is mountainous and geologically active, while earthquakes usually don't go anywhere near Australia. In fact, much of Australia is completely flat.

Australia, while originally sparsely inhabited by Aboriginal groups, is pretty diverse today. It's mostly White, but there are plenty of Asians, Africans, and Pacific Islanders too. Japan, however, is homogenous and resistant to immigration. This is probably because Japan surrendered at the end of World War II, so it never got occupied by the Soviet Union nor the US.
