Top 10 Worst Animals to Have as a Pet

You might think owning a monkey sounds like a blast until it bites your neighbor, destroys your couch, and flings questionable substances at your dinner guests. Some animals just weren't meant to share your living room, no matter how cute they look on TikTok.

This list isn't here to shame your goldfish or trash your childhood hamster. It's about the pets that, for one reason or another, turn domestic life into an unpredictable circus. Maybe they're dangerous. Maybe they smell like regret. Maybe they require the kind of care only a full-time zookeeper could handle. Whatever the reason, they make owning a pet feel more like surviving a wild animal documentary.

The Top Ten
  1. Skunks

Skunks are mammals known for their ability to spray a liquid with a strong odor as a defense mechanism. Species of skunks vary in appearance, with coloration ranging from black-and-white to brown or cream. All skunks have warning coloration to deter predators.

I believe they are cool animals, but if you really liked them, you'd let them live happily in the wild.

They would be cool pets, but your whole house would stink, and no guests would come for a fancy dinner party.

Skunks are bad smelling and the worst pet to have. I am happy this is number one.

  2. Sharks

Sharks are a type of elasmobranch fish known for their cartilaginous skeletons, multiple gill slits on the sides of their heads, and pectoral fins that are not fused to the head. They belong to the clade Selachimorpha, which is considered the sister group to rays.... read more

Yeah, I agree with those who love sharks. But as a pet? I'm not a huge "look but don't touch pet" fan. I'm all in for exotic pets that can be tamed easily. A shark, for instance, is not a hands-on pet.

For starters, they can fatally bite, and they're aquatic. Plus, they're not meant to be housed in a somewhat small enclosure. They belong in their natural habitat - the wild! That's how God designed them.

No matter how much you LOVE them, they don't make good pets. As Wild Kratts would put it, "Living free and in the wild!" lol.

Sure, you won't swim with it. You don't swim with betta fish or goldfish, right? Why the hell would you swim with it?

The question is, why is it the "worst animal" if it's not a danger to you or anyone unless you plan to kill someone by throwing them in the water or accidentally falling in while feeding it? Either way, only very rich people can afford it. It would be an awesome exhibition pet!

  3. Dogs

The dog, or domestic dog (Canis familiaris or Canis lupus familiaris), is a domesticated descendant of the wolf and is characterized by an upturned tail. Derived from an ancient, extinct wolf species, the modern wolf is its closest living relative. Dogs were the first species to be domesticated by humans... read more

I hate dogs. They bark at everything, slobber all over you, jump on you every time you enter the house, smell REALLY bad, and they lick your face and, worse, your MOUTH. Seriously, who likes that? That's disgusting!

They're WAY too overrated, but the owners are the worst of all. They'll do strange things with these animals, like try to mimic their behaviors. They'll bark at them and think they're "communicating with them," and some owners don't even care that their mangy mutts kill people.

I mean, seriously, someone in my neighborhood had their dog shot by the police because it was out of control and they said they were "only trying to play." It's super creepy.

  4. Lions

The lion (Panthera leo) is a large cat in the genus Panthera, native to sub-Saharan Africa and a single isolated population in western India. It has a muscular, broad-chested body, a short rounded head, round ears, and a hairy tuft at the end of its tail. Adult males are larger than females and have... read more

They'll kill you and probably not even eat the corpse. Lions are very wasteful.

They'll kill you. How is this lower than perfectly normal animals?

Where the heck are you gonna get one of these? The black market?

  5. Elephants

Elephants are the largest land animals alive today. There are three recognized species: the African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana), the African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis), and the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus). These are the only surviving members of the family Elephantidae. Extinct... read more

I love elephants, but I don't think they can be pets. I mean, they can't even fit in a house. Where would they sleep, then?

The backyard? Well, they are not the absolute worst, but I don't know.

Elephants are great animals, but who would want to keep one? Absurd! The survival rate would be 36% for the human. By the way, why are dogs ranked higher than elephants? They should go down to, like, 126th.

Elephants need to be left alone. Many people kill them just for their tusks, for the ivory black market trade. Leave these gentle beasts alone.

  6. Tigers

The survival chance for a human with a tiger is 30 percent. Who in their right mind would have a tiger as a pet? According to me, a tiger would be the worst pet to have.

In other words, I saw dogs up there at #11, and I think you should demote dogs to like #452. They are the best pets.

This is awful for the person and the cat. It is dangerous for the person and absolutely depressing for the cat. Would you want to live in a metal box your whole life? God, no! Leave them in the jungle and stop cutting down the forest. We will all be just fine.

  7. Rhinoceroses

A rhinoceros, commonly abbreviated to rhino, is a member of any of the five extant species (or numerous extinct species) of odd-toed ungulates in the family Rhinocerotidae. The term can also refer to extinct species in the superfamily Rhinocerotoidea. Two of the extant species are native to Africa, while... read more

How would you even keep this as a pet? Other than the fact you'd probably go to prison for owning one, how would you have a big enough yard for it? Enough food for it? Oh, and how would you keep your pet from getting taken out by poachers?

How do you keep a rhino as a pet? It's too big! It only belongs in zoos (as long as the zoos are humane and up-to-date) and in the wild.

Wild animals belong in the wild.

  8. Blue-Ringed Octopuses

The Blue-Ringed Octopuses (Hapalochlaena) are four highly venomous species found in coral reefs and tidal pools of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, particularly from Australia to Japan. They are considered among the most poisonous marine animals in the world. These octopuses can deliver a deadly neurotoxin... read more

Enough venom to kill something like 16 adult men! They have them at my local store and on a website called discountfish.co.uk in the marine section. You must be crazy to get one of these bad boys.

  9. Cats

The cat (Felis catus) is a domesticated small carnivorous mammal. It is the only domesticated species in the Felidae family and is commonly called the domestic cat to distinguish it from wild felines.

Cats can be house pets, farm cats, or feral. They are often valued for companionship and for... read more

They are the worst pets to ever have! Dogs have been domesticated way longer than cats (well, maybe not, but I like to say that). They are mean and vicious little things. Their relatives are way scarier than dogs' relatives. They bite more than dogs and look a lot more intimidating.

They come in only two different shapes and very few different colors, while there are a ton of different dog breeds. All they want is food, not your love and friendship. They don't look up to you for anything but food and are more likely to run away than dogs.

This is only my opinion. Your opinion counts too, so you can dislike or like my comment. I only spoke because I wanted to say something. Honestly, I didn't need to say it.

  10. Lizards

They will kill each other, not to mention you. They are very poisonous. You are better off with another lizard that is not so dangerous. Why would you want one?

If you love wild animals, I guarantee you would want them to be happy, which means leaving them in the wild because they are wild animals.

They are boring. Fish swim, but lizards just sit still as a rock!

  11. The Newcomers
  12. ?

    Wasps

Keeping wasps as pets seems like a death sentence, if you ask me.

  13. ?

    Dung Beetles

A type of beetle that feeds primarily on feces, the dung beetle plays a crucial role in nutrient recycling. Found on every continent except Antarctica, these beetles roll dung into balls and bury it as a food source for their larvae. They contribute significantly to soil aeration and the cycling of nutrients... read more

That's way too disgusting to be a pet.

  14. The Contenders
  15. Birds

Loud, obnoxious, dirty. Their feather dust gives people respiratory infections, and their feces have hordes of dangerous bacteria and viruses. Did I mention that they NEVER SHUT UP and are very messy?

How can a 'symbol of freedom' be a pet, a prisoner? They're nice animals and fun to watch, but locking them up for just childlike desires is merciless.

Birds are definitely the worst pets! They squawk all the time and have nothing good about them.

  16. Alligators

An alligator is a crocodilian in the genus Alligator, part of the family Alligatoridae. The two extant species are the American alligator and the Chinese alligator. Several extinct species are known from fossil remains, and alligators have existed since the Oligocene epoch, about 37 million years ago.... read more

An alligator is dangerous. You can't provide a good habitat for one, and it could eat you.

They can grow up to 6 feet long, and they are pretty dangerous!

You wouldn't live very long after that.

  17. Raccoons

The raccoon, sometimes spelled racoon and also known as the common raccoon, North American raccoon, or northern raccoon, is a medium-sized mammal native to North America. It is recognized for its distinctive facial mask and ringed tail.... read more

A raccoon almost bit my hand off trying to steal my sandwich.

They killed over 12 chickens, and one rabid one killed my cat.

  18. Monkeys

Monkeys are haplorhine primates that form a paraphyletic group. Most monkeys have tails and are distinct from apes. There are approximately 260 known living species of monkeys.

They are divided into two groups: New World monkeys (Platyrrhines), found in Central and South America, and Old World... read more

Cute, but should never be kept as pets. I'm going to be honest, monkeys are a lot like humans and deserve the same amount of attention and care as a baby does, except for a lifetime.

Most people don't have that kind of money and time to devote the proper care it takes to take care of a monkey. Plus, they live as long as humans. It's very abusive to treat a monkey as a pet because they are almost human. It's very slave-like and degrading to treat them as pets when they are so much more.

They are unpredictable wild animals. Probably harder to take care of than eight toddlers at a time. They can maim and kill you if they are mad.

  19. Tasmanian Devils

The Tasmanian devil is a carnivorous marsupial native to the island of Tasmania in Australia. It has a stocky body, black fur, and powerful jaws capable of crushing bones and cartilage.

Tasmanian devils are known for their aggressive behavior and loud vocalizations such as screeches and growls... read more

Who keeps this species as a pet? It has a strong jaw with sharp teeth and sharp claws on its front limbs. This animal can be really aggressive in captivity, so it is a big no-no for a pet.

I heard of a woman who had a cat and a Tasmanian Devil. After a day, she had a skeleton and a Tasmanian Devil.

They'll spin like tornadoes if you have one.

  20. Fish

    WHY ISN'T THIS NUMBER 1?

They have a really short lifespan. I used to have a bunch of them when I was little (I'm Asian), and they all died within 1-2 weeks of being purchased. They are also very boring.

They don't do much and you can't actually do anything with them. Asian people mainly treat them more as house decorations than actual pets.

Who wants to just sit there and watch a little orange thing move around a small bowl all day? The fish are also sad in that cramped little space. Let them roam free in the ocean.

  21. Hippopotamuses

The common hippopotamus, or hippo, is a large, mostly herbivorous mammal native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is one of only two extant species in the family Hippopotamidae, the other being the pygmy hippopotamus. Hippos are known for their massive size, semi-aquatic lifestyle, and territorial behavior in... read more

  22. Snakes

Snakes are elongated, legless, carnivorous reptiles that belong to the suborder Serpentes. Unlike legless lizards, snakes do not have eyelids or external ears, which are key distinguishing features. They can be found in a wide range of habitats around the world and vary greatly in size and behavior.

Snakes should NOT be considered pets, let alone good pets. Snakes are very important animals functioning in their native habitats and should be admired. A picture on the wall or a video of a snake is a more logical choice than a living snake in an enclosure that someone considers their "pet."

No, snakes are not meant to be pets. In the name of keeping an "exotic" animal as a pet, we are actually harming these poor creatures that are meant to be in the wild. So, nope, snakes are not good pets.

Snakes are ugly and dangerous. I hate that some people feed innocent puppies and kittens to these poisonous monsters.

  23. Wolves

The wolf (Canis lupus), also known as the gray or grey wolf, is a large canine native to Eurasia and North America. Over 30 subspecies of Canis lupus are currently recognized. Gray wolves represent the wild subspecies. As the largest extant member of the Canidae family, the wolf is distinguishable from... read more

Wolves are wild animals, but they can be kept as pets. They can act aggressively towards younger children and smaller pets, and they have a nasty bite. They poop all over your house and are illegal. How's that for a pet, wolfaboos?

They would eat you or just eat a hole in your wallet due to how ridiculously expensive they would be. Really, they would just be a highly dangerous and expensive "pet."

Wolf-dog mixes have become too popular. They are not afraid of people and are known to attack them. Wolves are more scared of us than we are of them.

  24. Hyenas

Hyenas, or hyaenas, are carnivorous mammals belonging to the family Hyaenidae. With only four extant species, they represent the fifth-smallest biological family in the order Carnivora. Despite their small number, hyenas play a vital role as both predators and scavengers in their ecosystems.

  25. Whales

Only possible (and plausible) if you owned enough real estate to sustain a pet whale enclosure.

  26. Giraffes

The giraffe is a tall African hoofed mammal belonging to the genus Giraffa. It is the tallest living terrestrial animal and the largest ruminant on Earth. Traditionally, giraffes were considered a single species, Giraffa camelopardalis, with nine subspecies. However, recent research analyzing mitochondrial... read more

How would this even be on the table as a pet? It wouldn't fit anywhere. You'd also need to grow trees as tall as a giraffe to feed it. Has anyone in history ever had a pet giraffe?

You need a big house for that!

  27. Ferrets

The ferret is the domesticated form of the European polecat, a mammal belonging to the same genus as the weasel, Mustela, of the family Mustelidae. Ferrets have been domesticated for thousands of years and are commonly kept as pets. They are known for their playful behavior and inquisitive nature.

Ferrets are my least favorite pets in the world. Getting ferrets was the worst thing that ever happened to my family. Ever since we got them, the annoying ferrets have destroyed everything they saw and bit everyone. Of course, all my family members loved them except me.

Whenever one of our four other pets even growled at a ferret, they got locked in a room, and I get locked in a room whenever I say something bad about ferrets. They are my least favorite pets!

At first, I wanted a ferret, but when my friend said her hamster was suddenly aggressive, I couldn't imagine what a ferret could've done. Now, I really want one because they're so cute!

  28. Spiders

Spiders are cool, but some are bad pets like black widows and brown recluses, and those deadly spiders. I like spiders like tarantulas. They are cool. I have always wanted one!

  29. Crocodiles

Crocodiles (family Crocodylidae), or true crocodiles, are large semiaquatic reptiles that live throughout the tropics in Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Australia. The term crocodile is sometimes used more broadly to include all extant members of the order Crocodilia, which encompasses alligators and... read more

Seriously? If you think this is bad, just look at humans. Humans are the top predator. And it's not like you would sleep with it or anything. It would be cool to watch. I know this personally.

This image just sums up how dangerous they are!
