Top 10 Best German Battle Rappers
In the early days of German hip hop, freestyle battles were common, mirroring the style of American battle competitions as seen in the movie 8 Mile. However, as German hip hop gained popularity, written rap battles and internet rap tournaments became increasingly prominent. In these tournaments, participants record diss tracks aimed at each other and produce music videos, which they then upload to the tournament's YouTube channel.Nowadays, when referring to German battle rap, people usually mean the latter. German battle rap had a significant impact on mainstream German hip hop during the 2010s. Several artists who participated in online battle rap tournaments released successful albums, with some even topping the charts.
Among the biggest tournaments are JuliensBlogBattle, Video Battle Turnier, and Rap am Mittwoch.

Before becoming SpongeBozz, Chpakov was known under the pseudonym Sun Diego. He was a collaborator and friend of Kollegah, as well as a part of the rap crew... read more
Let's talk about the entire career of SpongeBozz:
In 2011, Kollegah released his album "Bossaura," which was his first album to hit the German top 10. This was likely partly due to a review by German YouTube celebrity JuliensBlog. Afterwards, Kollegah became the leading figure of German hip hop, and rightfully so. In the review, there were guest parts by the then-unknown rapper Sun Diego, whom JuliensBlog criticized. He acknowledged Sun Diego's skills but bashed his use of autotune. Later, JuliensBlog uploaded another video focusing exclusively on Sun Diego, this time more aggressively, mocking his choruses and autotune, which made Sun Diego look like a joke. This effectively ended his career, and Kollegah did not collaborate with him again.
In 2012, JuliensBlog, mostly known as a dark-humored comedian rather than a music critic, hosted the first JuliensBlogBattle internet rap tournament. The participants were mostly amateurs who recorded their songs and videos at home. The battle was a huge surprise hit, returning the next year and annually since then. From 2013 onward, the videos and music had to be of high quality and at least remotely professional. It became a serious tournament and JuliensBlog's main profession.
In 2013, SpongeBozz first appeared. Lyrically and musically, he was far ahead of his fellow participants. He won so easily that the winner was apparent when he saw his qualification: double-time faster than Kollegah's, highly multisyllabic, unexpected and witty rhymes, and an overall attitude somewhere between menacing and cartoonish, making each punchline twice as hard-hitting. Rumors spread about who this masked but incredibly skilled newcomer was and why he hadn't appeared on the hip hop scene earlier. Names such as Kollegah, Battleboi Basti, and JuliensBlog himself were considered as the true identity of SpongeBozz. The most popular opinion was that it was Sun Diego seeking a fresh start for his rap career. This was confirmed... more

Entetainment won the 2015 JuliensBlogBattle and also participated in the 2014 JBB. Instead of double-time raps and "coolness," he focuses on a dark and creepy atmosphere, horrorcore elements, and a memorable overall tone.
His 2017 debut album hit the German top 10 but was not as blockbuster as SpongeBozz's. Nevertheless, in my opinion, it is a great album. He completely abandoned his diss track style in favor of music that follows a concept. It probably wasn't what people were expecting.

Kay One is the only freestyle MC who participated in 8 Mile-style battles I added. Unfortunately, most of his albums didn't match the high expectations. He mostly made party rap until he released his 2015 album "JGUDZS," which had a more battle-oriented style.
