21 He Stopped Loving Her Today - George Jones

Country music has always had a major role in expressing sorrow along with Blues. This is the quintessential sad song of the South. Nothing is more Country than this sad song of "love her 'til you die."

This song tears away even the toughest person's fear of crying in public. Upon hearing the lyrics I am reminded of every lost love that will never return to me and how terribly sad I am to have been left behind with nothing but pictures and videos that haunt me. To my son who just passed away I say, Hold the lamp high Matt. I'll be there soon.

This song always makes me cry. My grandma always plays it because wit hits home for her. Her husband died and this was her th song of sadness

This song has to be #1, I am not a country fan but this song is unbelievable. If you click and listen to this song it will definitely move up the charts where it belongs.

22 Hymn for the Missing - Red

WHAT! 318?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Trust me...you haven't heard a real sad song till you've heard this one. Every single time, this song will get you straight in the feels. It's so soothing and beautiful to the point where it leaves you in tears afterwards! If you haven't listened to it, you really should! - Vortexeo

Great song from a totally underrated band. - Thewhip73

This song deserves to be in top ten.
Vote for it guys

23 Hello - Evanescence

I think this song is really sad, but I loved it so much I had to listen to it over and over, it made me cry 5 out 7 times I would watch it in one day.

I think that this song is much more depressing than "my immortal" because a its about a young child at first in denial about a loved ones death, then they see the body for themselves, and my tears start forming.

This song is a song that only a few people know... But it is amazingly beautiful... I would say that it's my favourite Evanescence song... You will just love this song if you don't know this song.

Can't get any sadder than this

24 American Pie - Don McLean

I listened to this with my grandfather (it was one of his favorites) when I was little... All the time. He died 3 years ago and I miss him so much. I can't listen to the song anymore, because I couldn't stand the pain.

That's why I listen to the saga begins. But even that is still sad in the end. Weird Al can't make me laugh with this song, no matter how much I love the melody or Star Wars.

This song and Vincent get me every time

This is the saddest song on the list - 2storm

25 Leave Out All the Rest - Linkin Park

Belong to be most mellow song of this rock group. This song can make you feel emotional

The only time I cried by listening to a song. I will always remember you Chester.

I always got goosebumps listening to this song and thinking to myself what It would be like if Chester died (which is what he’s talking about in the song) and I thought like would be impossible.
On that morning when my mom woke me up to that news I knew my life would be more difficult and not looking back and listening to that song makes me the saddest ever just thinking once I never thought we would lose you and now where all looking for answers.

26 Dear Agony - Breaking Benjamin

In my top 3 favorite songs of all time. It's about the feeling of your life just fading away and you're fighting until the end and more. Also, I deeply miss a friend that had this as his favorite song, so now I cry every time I hear it.

I can't believe it...! Guys you gotta listen to BB.. This songs just takes you on pain trip...

By far the saddest song by Breaking Benjamin! I still love it though. If you actually listen to the lyrics, it just makes you feel really down.

I remember the song Blow Me Away was my first song of Breaking Benjamin, which I heard from a radio.I looked for more songs of him and I heard them, but when I heard this one I had no idea that Breaking Benjamin could be that sad.

27 Under the Bridge - Red Hot Chili Peppers

defo the most beautifully written lyrics ever - SoloStriker

Really? It's only really sad during the bridge (haha) part of the song, the rest is about the city of Los Angeles. Also, the song itself is really upbeat.

The city references were only there as a metaphor to the loneliness to the world. This is one of the saddest songs when you reflect on the lyrics.

28 Whiskey Lullaby - Brad Paisley & Alison Krauss

A song with naturally melancholic opening riff. The Diminished chord quality mixed with the powerful vocals of Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss make this song so powerful. What puts this song so far ahead of most is the story that the song tells, A woman puts a guy down so much that he kills himself thus the woman gets depressed thinking she caused his suicide so she kills herself clutching his picture "for dear life. " First 3 times I listened to it, I cried, and I rarely cry!

No idea why this fell so far. This is, in the form of song, the saddest love story ever.

This is by far, without a doubt, one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. It makes me cry every time I hear it.

It's so sad

29 Ashes of Eden - Breaking Benjamin

Want to cry every time I hear this song. - Thewhip73

30 Street Spirit (Fade Out) - Radiohead

How the hell is a Green Day song above Street Spirit. This song can literally lock me into listening. It darkens my mood from completely happy to sad and thoughtful. Also, as someone already pointed, Yorke himself has cried playing the song. He also struggles to play it at a concert in front of screaming fans because it is such a powerful song.

It's a beautiful song about complete hopelessness and sadness.. But with hope at the end "cracked eggs, dead birds, scream as they fight for life". - nirvanafan1998

Thom Yorke cried himself when playing this song, nuff said -

It reminds me of things I can't achieve and it makes me feeling so hopeless

31 Danny Boy - Jackie Evancho

Most beautiful version of this classic, sung by a girl of 10 (at the time of the recording). How can someone so young infuse this song with so much sadness? That's Jackie's great gift.

This classic has been covered by hundreds of top performers.
But Jackie Evancho gives it a whole new poignancy.

I don't understand how such a young singer can convey so much deep sorrow.

The most moving version of "Danny Boy" I have ever heard. Even though Jackie was only 10 she brought emotional understanding to the song far beyond her years. Now at 14 she is set to be one of the greatest if not the greatest singers of the 21th century.

32 Angel - Jackie Evancho

Here Jackie has taken Sarah McLachlan's carefully crafted lyrics, and leant a new meaning of hope and redemption. - Trancas

Why is this 38th when the original is in the two hundreds?

I really love this version of the song.

33 At Least We Tried - Moby

This is a very sad song; it exposes the pain you feel from any significant form of loss; breakup, death, anything. It shows that in these situations, one loses all power to keep control, knowing that you'll miss what you had. - PositronWildhawk

34 Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley

I want to cry every time I hear this, and there isn't even a reason. Later my best friend played this on the guitar and sang it too and I was filled with such a deep hurting longing feeling.

Saddest song. A lot of people can relate to it, and you can hear the hurt in the singer's voice.

Jeff Buckley amazing voice just get you right in the heart.

This song plays in Shrek. - AngusMacdonaldMii

35 21 Guns - Green Day

My brother passed away in war so this song makes me cry so much :'( x

Yes! Especially the Broadway version.

I wouldn't say the song is that sad but I love green day so much and am very loyal so I'm voting this

It makes me think of the time I almost died of assmha it makes me sad

36 Say Goodbye - Skillet

This Song NEEDS to be IN THE TOP 5! - deandinosaur5

37 Shine on You Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd

The reason this song is sad is that they're talking about a former band member by the name of Syd Barrett who left the band because of increasingly worse mental issues. He had schizophrenia, and lived as a recluse in his mother's basement for forty years. Ironically, he wandered into the studio that Pink Floyd was recording in, while they were playing this song. this was also his last encounter with the band. - ikedrums

It is so sad. You guys probably haven't ever really thought about the lyrics.

Best song ever. This should easily be in the top 10.

Why is it sad? Idgi, ik it's good but it barely has lyrics so why is it sad? Is it just like the music or?

38 Fix You - Coldplay

One of the most beautiful and moving songs about being lost or an outcast or losing someone close. Almost anyone can relate to this on the planet. The remix from DatsiK (look it up) made me outright bawl. You can feel the pain and sadness in his voice. He is hurt.

Yes this song is sad in the beginning, but it soon becomes inspiring at the end. I think that Amsterdam should replace this song. That song is filled with suicidal thoughts and depression. Don't get me wrong though, Fix You makes me cry every time, but it comes when the guitar comes into play, just because that sudden change in mood is so powerful.

It's so sad- shows the desperation at the start (when you try your best/ but you don't succeed/ when you get what you want/ but not what you need). This gives way to hope for the future that makes this song at once heartbreaking and uplifting, in classic Coldplay style (lights will guide you home... / and I will try/ to fix you)

I cry every time, I'm probably one of the few people who cries harder in the last half

39 How to Disappear Completely - Radiohead

If you heard this song, it would screw up your day. Of all the songs on this list, this is definitely the saddest/depressing dong of all time.

The only reason this song is so low is because not a lot of people have heard it and you're doing yourself a disservice if you haven't heard this.

One of the most emotive tracks ever produced

I just got back into Radiohead and completely forgot about this song...it will make you cry.

"I'm not here. This isn't happening."

40 Cat's In the Cradle - Harry Chapin

Anytime you see this song featured on a television show or a movie there is always a person who either has a tear running down his face in the show (or in real life) it really hits home for many people and should be more respected as one of the saddest of all time.

my dad used to sing this song to me every night to make me fall asleep... and as I got older I realized that he has missed a lot of my life because of his job!

How is this not higher. Whenever I'm alone and listen to this song I bawl. I get super depressed when I think about growing up. I try going to my happy place, (pretending I'm in Star Wars) but it doesn't help. By far, saddest song ever.

underrated - DaBoi
