417 Joseph Priestley Joseph Priestley Joseph Priestley was an 18th-century English theologian, dissenting clergyman, natural philosopher, chemist, educator, and Liberal political theorist who published over 150 works.

Priestley was the discoverer of oxygen and 6 other elements. His techniques for creating it lead to the foundation of modern chemistry. He wrote the book of electricity as encouraged by Benjamin Franklin and the first book standardising English grammar. He wrote hundreds of articles that inspired friends like John Adams and Thomas Jefferson with his revolutionary ideas and was an early founder of the Unitarian Church. Priestley discovered and created the first carbonated waters. He was an inspirational leader at the peak of the enlightenment period and the democratic world would not be the same without his actions and encouragements. Tesla would have had no foundations for his ideas. Darwin's grandfather would have not been a sponsor of research. Levoisier would not have understood the principles of chemistry. Both American and French revolutions were fueled by his sermons.
The best book on priestley is "the invention of air". He was one of the few polymaths that have existed.
