Sicily
The people are amazing there. They greeted me with open arms. (Not a reference to my username :) )
Something cool about Sicily that no other region has? Agrigento. Greek temples. Look them up. We have the most intact Greek temple right there in Sicily!
We also have the rocks of Polyphemus and a whole bunch of history and mythological connections. Did you know according to Greek mythology, Daedalus sailed to Sicily?
Anyway, you should look into this. You don't have to go (although that would be an amazing addition to a trip). Just look some stuff up. Research. I can't put it all in here for you because it would take a lifetime to say everything. It's kinda up to you.
You all have a great day! :)

Calabria
All of Italy held in just one place, you can look at tropical like beaches and sea while being on a snow-covered mountain. Awesome weather, awesome people and nature. It was the first place to ever be called Italia and it has a history of Greek origins. The legends around all the places I saw are told in the Odyssey and Iliad... just beautiful.
