Top 10 Best U.S. States to Visit on Vacation

From coastlines to canyons, skyscrapers to star-filled skies, the U.S. packs in more variety than a diner menu at 2 a.m. Some states serve up bucket-list adventures with a side of weird roadside attractions. Others pull you in with food so good you start looking up real estate.

This list isn't about guessing where everyone else goes. It's about what you think delivers the kind of vacation worth remembering. Is it all about the theme parks? National parks? Small-town charm, big-city buzz, or just the quiet kind of peace you can't buy at a souvenir shop?

Vote for the states you think actually deliver. Not the ones with the loudest ads or the fanciest slogans, but the ones where you left feeling better than when you showed up.

    California features diverse landscapes that include beaches, mountains, and deserts. Visitors can explore national parks such as Yosemite and Joshua Tree. Major cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco offer cultural and entertainment attractions.

    California has it all, from a long and varied seacoast to beautiful hills and the incredibly dangerous and beautiful Sierras. Add the valleys where wine is grown, and you've got something for everyone. Like Disneyland, it cannot be fully experienced in a brief visit.

    California offers amusement parks, beaches, national parks, historical landmarks, cultural centers, and more. Plus, your vacation probably won't be interrupted by bad weather since it's almost always sunny in California.

    California has everything! It's the best state ever! You can go surfing and skiing all in the same day!

  2. Florida

    Florida is known for its warm climate and numerous theme parks, including Walt Disney World and Universal Studios. The state has extensive coastlines along both the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. It also contains the unique ecosystem of the Everglades.

    The beach, Disney, and Universal Studios make Florida very diverse. The Cuban, Puerto Rican, Dominican, and Haitian communities there make it unique. In most states, it's mostly one race. For example, Arkansas and Idaho are predominantly white, while Georgia and Maryland have large Black populations. The only truly diverse states are New York, Florida, California, and Massachusetts.

    Florida is the best state for beaches and theme parks within the same state. The beaches of Western Florida are soft, sandy, and beautiful. Florida is a peninsula surrounded by beaches with both sunrises and sunsets. Can you get both sunrises and sunsets anywhere else?

  3. Hawaii

    Hawaii consists of volcanic islands in the Pacific Ocean with tropical weather year-round. Tourists often visit for beaches, surfing, and Hawaiian cultural experiences. The islands include active volcanoes, such as those in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

    Hawaii looks like a beautiful place to live. My sister lived there, and the pictures are so beautiful.

    Beautiful state, but too expensive to live in unless you want to live outside.

    I've never been to Hawaii, but it is definitely on my things-to-do list!

  4. New York

    New York offers urban tourism in New York City as well as natural attractions in the Adirondacks and Finger Lakes. The Statue of Liberty and Times Square are prominent landmarks. Upstate New York provides opportunities for hiking, skiing, and wine tasting.

    New York is the best. We New Yorkers are honest, bold, and helpful. People from all over come to visit NY. I live here, and you wouldn't believe how many tourists I see every day.

    The Big Apple is a great place, but for those who want to see the wild side of New York, go to the Adirondacks.

  5. Colorado

    Colorado is known for its Rocky Mountain scenery and outdoor recreation, including skiing and hiking. Denver and Boulder provide cultural and culinary experiences. National parks like Rocky Mountain and Mesa Verde attract nature enthusiasts.

    With skiing and snowboarding, it's clear that nobody who's been to Colorado would leave it off this list. It should be right behind Hawaii.

    Even though Texas is my home state, I think Colorado offers the very best vacations.

  6. South Carolina

    South Carolina has Atlantic Ocean beaches, historic districts, and golf resorts. Charleston is known for its preserved architecture and Southern charm. Myrtle Beach is a popular destination for family vacations.

    I have been to Charleston and Myrtle Beach, and both were very fun.

    South Carolina is my go-to vacation spot. There's always someplace fun to go.

  7. Alaska

    Alaska features vast wilderness areas, glaciers, and a wide variety of wildlife. Visitors often travel by cruise or scenic railway to experience the landscape. National parks like Denali and Kenai Fjords are major draws.

    I already live in Utah, but Alaska is awesome too.

    It's freezing, but great for skiing!

  8. Pennsylvania

    Pennsylvania includes historical landmarks such as Independence Hall and Gettysburg. The state also features natural scenery like the Pocono Mountains. Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are cultural and culinary hubs.

    I live in Philly. It's so close to the NJ shore, and I live only 1 hour from Dorney Park and 2 hours from Hershey Park. I also live 2 hours from NYC!

    Utah is home to five national parks known as the "Mighty 5," including Zion and Arches. Its landscape includes canyons, rock formations, and desert terrain. Outdoor activities include hiking, rock climbing, and photography.

    Utah is home to Lake Powell, the best vacation spot ever.

    Zion National Park, the reservoirs, the mountains, the atmosphere. Need I say more?

  10. Washington

    Washington is known for its Pacific coastline, national parks, and the city of Seattle. Mount Rainier and Olympic National Park are popular destinations. The state also has a thriving coffee and tech culture.

    Washington state is underrated. I went to Seattle twice with my family, and it was awesome, especially my 2019 trip. 10/10 would go back if I could.

    There's so much to do in Arizona. I went there for 9 weeks, did different activities every single day, and still couldn't cover everything!

    The lakes are amazing, and the Grand Canyon is beautiful.

    Virginia includes historical landmarks from the colonial and Civil War periods. The Blue Ridge Parkway and Shenandoah National Park are major scenic routes. Coastal areas such as Virginia Beach attract summer visitors.

    Texas offers diverse attractions ranging from cities like Austin and San Antonio to natural sites like Big Bend National Park. The state features cultural influences from Mexico and the American South. Visitors can experience music, food, and historical landmarks.

    I recently visited Houston, Corpus Christi, San Antonio, and Dallas. I can say Texas is definitely the best state to vacation in. It's beautiful and the people there are very friendly. I feel Texas is something to be really proud of.

    Texas is an underrated state to visit because of all the stereotypes. The weather is unpredictable in both good and bad ways.

    I live here, and I don't want to take a vacation, so yeah...

    North Carolina includes the Blue Ridge Mountains and Atlantic coast beaches. The Outer Banks offer historic lighthouses and wildlife refuges. Cities like Asheville and Charlotte provide urban experiences.

    Maryland offers Chesapeake Bay scenery and historical sites from the colonial and Civil War eras. Baltimore has an inner harbor area with museums and attractions. The state has access to both beaches and mountains.

    I live in Maryland, and I have to say we have some pretty cool places like Six Flags America and Ocean City.

    I went to Ocean City twice, and it's awesome!

    Maryland rocks the most, not Hawaii!

  21. Nevada

    Nevada is known for Las Vegas entertainment and desert landscapes. Outside of urban areas, it features attractions like Red Rock Canyon and Lake Tahoe. Gambling and nightlife are major components of the tourism industry.

    This should be in the top 10. Las Vegas is one of the best vacation spots.

  22. Ohio

    Ohio offers a mix of industrial history, amusement parks, and major sports teams. Attractions include Cedar Point, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Amish Country. Cities like Columbus and Cincinnati have museums and dining scenes.

    Last summer, I saw the Western and Southern Open tennis tournament here with my family. It was very fun, and I got to meet some of the players.

    Think about it: Great Wolf Lodge, Cedar Point, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and a national park in one state.

  23. Tennessee

    Tennessee is home to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and music heritage in cities like Nashville and Memphis. The state has attractions related to country, blues, and rock music. Graceland and Dollywood are also major tourist sites.

    My grandpa lives in Tennessee, and we visit him every year. It's a very fun state to visit.

    I just returned from my first visit here, and it was AMAZING!

  24. Delaware

    Delaware has Atlantic beaches, colonial towns, and tax-free shopping. Rehoboth Beach is a well-known summer destination. The state also offers access to nature trails and wildlife refuges.

    Georgia has coastal islands, mountain ranges, and major cities like Atlanta and Savannah. The state offers Civil Rights history, Southern cuisine, and antebellum architecture. Stone Mountain and Okefenokee Swamp are popular natural sites.

    I love the NJ shore. It's fun, with lots of boardwalks featuring rides and arcades. Ocean City, NJ, is one of my favorites. I also like Atlantic City, Seaside Heights, and Wildwood.

    The boardwalks are awesome, especially in Ocean City, Atlantic City, Wildwood, and Seaside Heights.

  28. New Mexico

    New Mexico features a blend of Native American and Spanish cultures, reflected in its art and architecture. Santa Fe and Taos are cultural and artistic centers. Natural attractions include White Sands and Carlsbad Caverns.

  29. Connecticut

    Connecticut features New England coastal towns and colonial history. Attractions include maritime museums and Yale University in New Haven. The fall foliage season is a popular time for tourism.
