The Contenders: Page 8
Cardi B can gladly take the title "Newcomer of the Year", and if her 2017 mixtape “GBM Vol. 2” was only the warm-up, I can’t wait for what’s to come.
Like most people I guess, I discovered her through her breakthrough hit “Bodak Yellow”, which topped the American charts but was completely ignored in Germany - if Rap Critic wouldn’t have reviewed it, I probably would have never discovered it. I immediately got hooked. This is pure flow and personality. This is more than just a cool jam, Cardi B dominates and rides the beat with her musical vocal delivery, and claims the throne by baring her claws lyrically. Now, “GBM Vol. 2” was released months before that, and also before she got a major label contract. I did only expect to hear the potential she would later fully live out - and what I got was one of my favorite records of the year.
Cardi B manages to develop character traits, world views and quirks over a duration of mere 28 minutes. But more ...more - Martin_Canine

Easily the best unknown album of the year, ATLAS presents The Score as Imagine Dragon in sound, Coldplay in theme, and Harry Styles in emotion. Over-the-top everywhere, it wouldn’t work with anyone else. - katman46

After just having listened to it for the first time, I really don't know what to make of this album. The first few songs sound like she tried to jump on this art pop thing Beyoncé and Rihanna successfully tried out in 2016, but doesn't really reach their quality, as she loses all her pop appeal completely and makes the songs unnecessarily challenging to listen to. Furtado already was extremely creative with her pop music and was, more than anything, a gifted songwriter. "Folklore" and "The Spirit Indestructible", while not her most popular albums, interpolated so many different genres, moods and textures while still sounding catchy and easy to listen to, that it already kind of was art pop before it was cool. And then, before the second half, it appears Furtado suddenly re-discovered the pop roots and combined them with the unusual production. "Sticks and Stones" is simply an earworm, despite a very druggy and experimental beatwork. The same goes for what follows afterwards, ...more - Martin_Canine
Based on the first four singles, really liking the variety in sound. - ProPandaV 1 Comment
Honestly, the character of Filthy Frank is so vile, yet so funny at the same time; that I don't know whether to take him seriously or not. And this album is a perfect representation of the character. Sure, you get disgusting songs like HNBOAP, but you also get incredibly humorous songs like I Do It for My Hood and Meme Machine. There's also serious songs like Help and We Fall Again, both of which I unapologetically love. I also love the fact that he raps in Japanese in セックス大好き, it's a pretty unique style. But then again, you get pretty bad songs about jerking it to female Nickelodeon stars and a stereotypically awful song about the South.
For me, it's a 5/10. Take from it what you will. - SwagFlicks
