He have mixed black rhythm and blues with white country which gave Rockabilly ( the primitive form of Rock and Roll ) while he was at SUN records. No sound like that was heard before ( there were rhythm and blues songs that almost sounded like Rock and Roll and even country songs [ hillbilly boogie, Western swing etc...] that sounded close to Rock and Roll ). It's the mix of these two cultures ( who were still separated on radio, juke-boxes...in the fifties ) that opened the doors to what would become popular Rock and Roll. He created Rockabilly ( a mix of two existing genres ) and made Rock and Roll popular worldwide.
Really? Do some research. He did NOT "create" rock 'n' roll, and he would have been the first to say so. He POPULARIZED it.

28 James Brown
Mr.Brown should be in the number 1 spot for inventing Funk, (his songwriter Ted Wright wrote a song to allow Brown's band to give a hint to their rthymic innovations with 'Out Of Sight'. Brown himself wrote 'Papa's Got A Brand New Bag' (Part 1) and his most famous song; ' I Got You (I Feel Good)' which later developed these innovations). It was with his 1967 hit 'Cold Sweat' (Part 1 and Part 2) with which Brown and his band would declare Funk as their own. This song was written by Brown and his saxophonist, Alfred Ellis. It dramitacally emphasised playing on the first beat of each bar (the song is in 4/4 time) and was melodically inspired by Miles Davis' earlier, equally radical composition 'So What' from his 1959 album 'Kind Of Blue'. This album, like Brown's composition, was innovative itself, as it layed the groundwork for a new sub-genre of jazz; 'Modal Jazz'.

The Melvins are an American band that formed in 1983. They usually perform as a trio, but in recent years have performed as a four piece with two drummers.
The Melvins were one of the creators of grunge along with Soundgarden and Green River; they also have influenced many other grunge bands. They also made sludge metal (Well, to be fair, the roots of sludge metal can be traced back to Black Sabbath and black flag experimented with sludge metal on their "my war" album.) However, the Melvins were really the first band to establish it as a genre. The underground was full of bands playing very fast. When the Melvins slowed down their music, many of the underground bands did the same and thus sludge metal was created/considered to be a genre. Also their music is great and most of the artists on this list didn't create anything new.
