Worst Industrial Disasters of All Time

For all of the things industry has done for our planet, it goes without saying that disasters unfortunately happen as a part of it, some of which can be devastating. Here are the worst industrial disasters that have ever happened.
The Top Ten
1 Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster (1986) The Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster of 1986 was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine. The disaster resulted in a large release of radioactive materials into the environment, causing numerous deaths and long-term health effects for those exposed.
2 Bhopal Gas Tragedy (1984) The Bhopal Gas Tragedy of 1984 was a gas leak incident that occurred in Bhopal, India, at the Union Carbide India Limited pesticide plant. The disaster caused the immediate deaths of thousands of people and resulted in long-term health problems for many more.
3 Halifax Explosion (1917) The Halifax Explosion of 1917 was a catastrophic maritime disaster that occurred in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, when two ships collided in the city's harbor. The explosion resulting from the collision was the largest man-made explosion prior to the development of nuclear weapons, causing extensive damage and loss of life.
4 Dhaka Garment Factory Collapse (2013) The Dhaka Garment Factory Collapse of 2013 was a building collapse that occurred in Savar, a suburb of Dhaka, Bangladesh. The disaster caused the deaths of over a thousand people and highlighted the dangerous working conditions in the country's garment industry.

I remember hearing about this. The main reason was that the lower levels of the building were designed to support three stories but instead, it had five. Heavy machinery only made it worse. 1,134 people died, and 2,500 were injured (honestly surprised how many people survived given a five-story building collapsed on them).

I hope future construction companies, safety planners, etc., learn from this mistake.

5 Benxihu Colliery Mine Disaster (1942) The Benxihu Colliery Mine Disaster of 1942 was a mining accident that occurred in Benxi, Liaoning, China. The disaster caused the deaths of thousands of miners and was one of the worst coal mining disasters in history.
6 Laos Hydroelectric Dam Collapse (2018) The Laos Hydroelectric Dam Collapse of 2018 was a disaster that occurred at the Xe-Pian Xe-Namnoy hydroelectric power project in southeastern Laos. The collapse of the dam caused widespread flooding and destruction, resulting in numerous deaths and displacements.
7 Beirut Explosion (2020) The Beirut Explosion of 2020 was a massive explosion that occurred in the port of Beirut, Lebanon, resulting from the ignition of a large quantity of ammonium nitrate stored unsafely in a warehouse. The disaster caused widespread damage, deaths, and injuries.
8 Courrières Mine Disaster (1906) The Courrieres Mine Disaster of 1906 was a mining accident that occurred in Courrieres, France. The disaster resulted in the deaths of over a thousand miners and is still the worst mining disaster in European history.
9 Great Molasses Flood (1919) The Great Molasses Flood of 1919 was a tragic industrial accident that occurred in Boston, Massachusetts. A large tank filled with molasses ruptured, causing a wave of sticky syrup to flood the streets at speeds of up to 35 miles per hour. The disaster claimed the lives of 21 people and injured 150 more. It took weeks to clean up the mess, and the incident had a lasting impact on safety regulations and liability laws.
10 Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster (2011) The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster of 2011 was a catastrophic accident at a nuclear power plant in Japan. A massive earthquake and tsunami caused a meltdown of the plant's reactors, leading to the release of radioactive material into the environment. The disaster forced the evacuation of thousands of people and had a significant impact on the global nuclear industry. The long-term effects of the radiation exposure on the health of workers and local residents are still being studied today.

11 East Palestine Norfolk Southern Train Derailment (2023) The East Palestine Norfolk Southern Train Derailment of 2023 was a train accident that occurred in East Palestine, Ohio, USA.
12 Oppau Explosion (1921) The Oppau Explosion of 1921 was a disaster that occurred in Oppau, Germany, when a large stockpile of ammonium sulfate and ammonium nitrate fertilizer exploded. The disaster resulted in numerous deaths and widespread damage.
13 Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill (2010) The Deepwater Horizon oil spill of 2010 was one of the largest and most devastating environmental disasters in history. An explosion on an offshore oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico led to a massive release of crude oil into the ocean, causing extensive damage to marine life and coastal ecosystems. The spill lasted for almost three months and released an estimated 4.9 million barrels of oil into the ocean. The environmental and economic effects of the disaster are still being felt today.
